Leave ASEM The Hell Alone!

blankI am always beaming with smiles and get exhilarated whenever I hear people write serious grammar to lambaste Ghana Music Awards 2009 New Artiste of the Year winner Asem. I begin to ask questions if those people are indeed for real.

In August 1999, Ricci Osei, Reggie’s late father said “if they are not talking about you, it means you are not worth talking about”, so I guess you understand me now why they keep talking about him, Asem is worth talking about really.

“I Have A Problem With Everyone, Including God” – Kwaw Kese

blankAbodam is an assumed name of a mad man walking free on the streets of Accra under the pretext of doing hip life.Methinks, Kwaw Kese is just arrogant, bloody opportunist; I think he’s an attention seeker.

Why does he want his butt on everybody’s case? This guy is accused of defrauding his ex girl friend; he is again indicted for stealing Konfi’s lyrics in his Zoom Lion Campaign song. I doubt if he’s going to come out clean.

He was on Peace FM, sometime ago to speak well of his immoral acts, praising polygamy, he wants to marry as many as 10 because Ghanaian women needs to be loved. Real definition of a mad man huh? Kwaw Kese the self-acclaimed king of the streets is set to launch his latest album anytime soon on the streets.

The Perfect Picture Or The Wrong Picture?

blankSparrow Productions under the directorship of Shirley Frimpong Manso have recently produced another distinct and amazing Ghanaian Movie called the Perfect Picture. Starring in this amazing Romantic Comedy are Jackie Appiah, Lydia Forson, Naa Asorkor mensah-Doku, Adjety Annang, Nana Kwame Osei Sarpong with Chris Attoh and introducing Kwaku Sintin – Misa.

This well written romantic comedy has been widely received and captioned as one of the best movies coming from Ghana after its success in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Accra and London. The film is akin to Peter Heller’s Brown sugar in which three attractive women hitting their thirty try to change their lives for the better. The film sets out to unfold their pursuit for love and tests their friendship. The beautiful scenes were shot in one of the most beautiful places in Ghana(Takoradi).

Van Vicker; He Has Actually Improved As an Actor But…

blankIn the past, I have written two articles on what was Van Vicker’s nonexistence acting skill. I was unable to get over his abysmal portrayal of characters, and his reluctance to abandon his swagger and commit fully to a character.  As a result, his movies along with a host of others became my ultimate bête noir.

However, his recent performances are a far cry from the wooden depictions I became accustomed to. His switch from ridiculousness to brilliance from scene to scene in his previous performances was a complete turnoff. But over time his acting has improved immensely. However, can he hold his own with the veterans? Not yet I am afraid.

4×4 Turned Nigerians?

blank

4×4 is a rap duo made up of two good looking and ‘macho’ young men, Captain Planet and Abortion. Captain Planet’s real name is Sylvanus Dodji Jeoffrey.Abortion was christened Raphael Edem Avornyo.

Abortion is simply a ragga artiste with a Jamaican flow. When it comes to rapping in Pidgin English Eddie Blay of Native Funk Lord, Prince Bright of Buk Bak fame are experts but Captain Planet has indeed stole that title particularly when Eddy Blay and Prince Bright are jaded. Captain Planet is really in a class of his own, his stuck on the Ga language is very interesting, he raps in Ga with so much ease and one wonders if he’s a native of Bukom or Chorkor.Abortion’s Jamaican-ragga-flow is what differentiates him from the chaff.

Ghana Movies:Please Get Your Biological Facts Straight!

blankEver watched a Ghanaian movie in which the doctor launches into a string of medical gibberish? Ever witness these doctors diagnosediseases by placing their stethoscope over a patient’s chest?  Tired of all the medical baloney huh? So am I!  According to Ghanaian (African) movies, when a couple can’t have a boy it’s the woman’s fault, hence the man divorces the woman and marries another.  Do all women go to the hospital for a test before knowing for certain that they are pregnant?

Well, according to Ghanaian movies that is the case. Ooh…ooh…ooh have you grown weary of actresses screaming on top of their lungs the moment they go into labor? So am I! And for Christ sake do all accident victims require a bandage around their head? Even a bullet to the butt requires a bandage around the head, what the heck?

Fate of the Unfaithful; What a Fuckery!

blank

This should have been a review but it’s not! It’s more of a rant. The truth is I can’t get over the fact that I wasted 30 minutes of my time watching that “fugly” train wreck excuse of a movie called ‘Fate of the Unfaithful.’  I didn’t finish the movie nor was able to bring myself to pay close attention to write what would have been a review. Instead, I have decided to write what I have aptly dubbed ‘WARNING: This may hurt your eyes.’

Confidence Haugen; Do Not Judge a Book by Its Cover

blank

Describing Confidence’s sense of style as haute will be far-fetched; however, catastrophic does spring to mind immediately, especially considering the responses it provokes. Confidence may have stepped on some toes with her daring style, which has well, drawn some harsh criticisms. However, whatever the reasons behind her sense of fashion, it appears she has had her fill of the negative publicity surrounding her.  It’s about time the public shift its attention and focus on what she is least known for-her numerous charity works in Ghana.

Jackie Colors Colors Appiah

blank

The desire to standout is just human nature. Unfortunately, some try too hard and end up committing silly mistakes. It happens with everybody. However, the same cannot be said of habitual fashion offender Jackie Appiah. Recently, Ghanacelebrities was heavily criticized for including Jackie in our first annual best dress list (2008). The disapproval sent our way by some readers is completely understandable. She made that list based on her style off set which is best described as pleasant.  However, Jackie’s onscreen looks over the years have slowly morphed from being fairly chic to disastrous; her onscreen style can be described in one word-tacky, with one hell of a capital T.

Jackie’s onscreen color scheme is usually off and does not relate to the occasion or environment.  She is usually decked out in vibrant coordinating colors more often than not accentuated with drag make up. The most irritating aspect of this is her penchant for tying huge scarves and flowers that belong in a vase around her neck-can she even breath with that suffocating thing around her neck all in the name of fashion?

Essien’s ex Dela; A Perfect Picture of Woman Scorned

I have been familiar with the whole Dela-Essien-Nadia triangle for quite some time now. Matter of fact,I considered blankdedicating an entire article to the ongoing fiasco in the past. For a long time, I resisted the nagging urge to honor this mess a space on my hard drive, let alone waste my precious energy writing an article on it. What prompted me to finally give in to the urge is that the whole fiasco has taken a turn for the worst. Contrary to what was reported earlier, it was Dela who took Essien to court and not the other way round. Dela recently dragged Essien to court over failing to compensate her after “their divorce.” DIVORCE!? Hold on a minute, when did the alleged nuptial take place?

Obviously, there may be more to this story as there are more sides to every story. In the beginning, I sympathized with Dela. Of course it hurts to be scorned, especially by someone you deeply care about; it becomes even more painful when everything is played out in the public eye. However, whatever dignity Dela had throughout this saga is now in shreds given her recent behavior. Her behavior irks me beyond reason; it appears she has this sense of entitlement to Essien’s money. Sometimes, I get the inkling the law she is studying in London triggers her sometimes erratic and irrational behavior, but then there may be other ulterior motives; could it be greed? Desperation? Vengeance? What is it?

Is Kumasi’s HipLife Dying?

blank
Reggie Rockstone

When the 90’s ushered us into the era of Hiplife , Kumasi became its beacon. Oseikrom was massively behind Hiplife’s success. I still remember the days when musicians, producers, sound engineers constantly said: “if your song is accepted by Kumasi, then it has been accepted by the whole nation”. Kumasi was the kingmakers in dictating which musician worn an award. I still remember those times when Hiplife musicians used to launch their albums in Kumasi. That is certainly not the case today.  For instance, it was surprising to know that Praye’s “Angelina” was really popular in Accra weeks before people in Kumasi even recognized. Some few weeks ago, majority of people in Kumasi did not even know who Sarkodie was.

Ghana Movie Fashion Shows

One of the overlooked elements in terms of making a movie (as far as most African movies are concerned) in its entirety is the WARDROBE. Though awards are handed out for doing an excellent job of finding or creating precisely the right clothes for the cast of a movie, it seems movie makers and actors still do not grasp the significant role a wardrobe plays in the overall quality of a movie. Why this article? It appears more and more newly released movies are becoming more centered on fashion taking away from the movie concept. The problem with this ongoing “Fashion Shows” is that, they are not complimentary to the movies.

Do Gospel Musicians Pay Payola?

Ohemaa Mercy
Ohemaa Mercy

The above named question sounds like a million dollar question but trust me am not that dumb to ask such a thought provoking question. I decided to write this piece because the question ‘do gospel musicians pay payola’ has been with me since I was that little-fun-boy and now that I have grown up and almost going bald. I get confused anytime I ask that question because I do not get the answer I was anticipating, and what answer was I expecting? Read on.

I ask that question because I have observed over the years that it is only in Ghana Music Chart (I stand to be corrected if am wrong) that you see only the music we call secular (worldly) music always topping the chart at the expense of the gospel musicians and it is even more strange because Ghana has a lot of gospel musicians and the number keep increasing day in, day out.
