OMG!-Is She Chinese, White or Ghanaian?

blankIt has always been every little girl’s dream to pursue the princess lifestyle of a blonde white Barbie doll. Barbie lives in a playhouse, owns a pink convertible and has a boyfriend named Ken of which according to reports represents what every girl hopes to have one day.

Living in a predominately white society, one may argue that the image of Barbie as a ‘Blonde-blue eyed’ woman with a tiny waist can convey wrong messages to girls about the concept of beauty. The dominant portrayal of Barbie as the epitome of beauty, places a negative impact on black girls’self-image from a critical development stage. According to psychological research, the dream of conforming to the ideal representation of beauty is sub-consciously internalized amongst black girls. As a result they tend to misidentify themselves as white females instead of black females.

You would think that this childhood dream once desired amongst girls at an early age would gradually fade. This is not because of them progressing in age, but due to the emergence of positive black female role models in the media.

However, looking at the pictures in this article, it seems that this girlie dream of following the footsteps of Barbie continues to prevail. Sally Kanbonaba Kleyn, the CEO of Monte Carlo Grande Café situated in the heart of Accra, announced that her extravagant style of fashion was for a business purpose in promoting tourism in Ghana. It is astonishing for one to say such way of dressing and style would attract tourism. What kind of tourism is she talking about? Ah aba! Lets proceed…

Sally is married to a Dutch businessman, Hank Kleyn and has a five-year old daughter. She also owns a Hummer H2 Model, a Ranger Rover Sports 2007, Mercedes X-Class 500, an Escalade and is reportedly one of the most successful businesswomen in Ghana. In her own words “unfortunately or fortunately developed very expensive taste for fashion. Everything to do with things around me, from furniture to clothes is authentic and expensive,” she stated.

Sally, who claims to be‘100% Ghanaian,’ is originally from Bawku in the Upper in the East Region, revealed that her favourite hobby is spending time in the mirror. “I like taking care of myself by making sure every detail or every part of my body is done. I like to do my hair and nails.’’

Do you think that all her efforts and time spent in the mirror has paid off? No comment! You decide by looking at the photos and say what comes into your mind.

    • @Lotoya,
Sometimes the way we dark skinned people look at ourselves affect others’ perspectives too. If you know you are beautiful, you don’t need to explain anything. Beauty speaks for itself.
And remember it’s not what people think of dark skin that does anything, it’s what you think others think. What YOU think other people think is what you think. Does it make sense?
The more you complain, the more you make others feel that you are not comfortable in your own skin.

  10. Some of you should think about the reaction of the person if she were to read these comments. They are women and some of you guys should just relax and think about why a person would wear make-up, then you criticize them. Their faces, their make-up.
