So You Think You Are Smart? Solve This…

Riddle

Well, i have been pondering about this mind-twisting question for sometime now. A normal life experience but very difficult to work out the solution. I bow down to anyone who can come out with the right answer. If you are ready, let me roll it on.

SITUATION: Three guys went to a drinking spot. After spending several hours on beer, each of them contributed GH25 (making a total of GH75) for the bill.

After given the GH75 to the waitress, she realized that the cost of beer was  GH70 not GH75 as the guys contributed.  So that means the waitress had to give back GH5.

However, realizing that they were only three guys, wondering how three people can share GH5, the waitress kept GH2 to herself and gave them GH3 to be shared.

ANALYSIS: So we can now conclude that each of the three guys contributed GH24 for the cost of the beer (remember that they were given back GH1).

CONCLUSION: If we start the addition again, the total amount contributed to pay the bill is now GH72 (for the three people). Ok, let’s add the GH2 kept (secretly) by the waitress. That makes a total of GH74.

QUESTION: Where is the remaining Gh1? (Remember that each of the three guys initially contributed GH25 to make GH75.

  1. hmmm, there is no ¢1 anywer cos
    1. they all got ¢1 back and dat means they all contributed ¢24 which equals to ¢72.
    2. there4 the waitress pay’d ¢70 for the beer and keeps the ¢2. i hope im correct.

    • no, maybe u didn’t understand the question well. note that the guys actually paid ¢75 for the beer, but because they were given back ¢1 each it is assumed that they paid ¢72. if the ¢2 kept by the waitress is added, that makes ¢74(24+24+24+2).
now the question is why is the total ¢74 and not ¢75. actually, the total should be ¢75(not ¢74) because that is the actual money they gave out.

  2. it not about the amount they contributed but the cost of the drink they took. they might have contributed GH.25 each but for all the drink they took , it was GH.70. the calculation is not on the amount they paid each, but the over all cost of all the drinks.

  3. obour, the waiter’s ¢2 kept makes the diff. it is agreed that they got ¢1 back so from their point of view, they know they are paying ¢72(¢24+¢24+¢24). but from the waiter’s perspective, they are actually paying ¢70. so adding the waiter’s ¢2 to their ¢72 is wrong since it is SECRET and obviously the guys are not aware. the calc(¢24+¢24+¢24+¢2) is wrong cos the waiter’s ¢2 was from the ¢24+¢24+¢24 and therefore cannot be added to it.

    • @genius…, i think the ¢2 should be added. we are talking about two payments here (the original one ¢75 and the imagined-¢72) at the end of the day, the total money should be ¢75 because that is what they gave out. the ¢2 was not taken from the ¢24+¢24+¢24 but rather ¢25+ ¢25+ ¢25( ¢75)so it can be counted.
the secret is that, the initial money paid by the guys ¢75(25+25+25) should be equal to the second calculation ¢74(24+24+24+2). but is not the same

  4. Obour, go back to ur ANALYSIS and u will realise dat ur calculation is wrong…The reason being dat, if it is assumed dat the drinks cost 70cedis and as a result they were later given 3cedis each; den the total cost for the drink becomes 73 cedis, implying that they each paid some pesewas in excess of 24 cedis…(not 24 cedis each equating to 72 cedis)….so dis 73 cedis plus the waiter’s 2 cedis gives 75 cedis….

good you really understand the situation here.

“The reason being dat, if it is assumed dat the drinks cost 70cedis and as a result they were later given 3cedis each; den the total cost for the drink becomes 73 cedis”
      ,
but have u forgotten that they initially paid ¢25 each? since they were given back ¢1 we can say that they paid ¢24 each.
there is no excess because if we subtract ¢70(actual price) from the ¢75(as they initially paid, we have ¢5. now lets share the ¢5…
¢3went to the guys and ¢2 went to the waitress, so there won’t be pesewas.

  5. memaselfi, it is this, assuming u give me ¢75 to pay for a shirt and i realize the shirt actually costs ¢70 but i tell u the shirt is ¢72. i will give u ¢3 back and wil keep the ¢2 secretly. compare this to obour’s situation bearing in mind the guys bliv the bill is ¢72 cos they only got ¢3 back(¢1 each) and the waiter paid only ¢70 and keeps the remaining ¢2(a secret the guys still don’t know)

your analysis here is different from the situation. according to what you are saying, u’re talking about only one person therefore, if you add the money, u will get 75 because we have only two people.

  6. obour, there’s still a p wif ur calculation ¢74=(¢24+¢24+¢24+¢2). if i get u ryt the calculation does not include the ¢1 they each got back. adding d@ will give us ¢77. so wer from the xtra ¢2.

  7. if the woman said the drink is 70 GHC then we should divide 70 by 3 which is 23.333333. so in the process they will loose 33 pesewas in the 70 the’ve paid. am i right?

  8. the awnser is the drink should cost GH73 coz the drinks cost GH70 but the were givin GH3 back so dat is my awnser

  9. the 1GHC is as a result of the watress not able to share the 5ghc and kept the 2ghc. so in effeect the 1ghc is the amount not cintributed by any of the freinds
and as such made the watres to keep the 2ghc

  10. lets take it this way, 75cedis-the 2 cedis she kept secretly gives us 73cedis left.
73cedis minus the one cedi each given back thus 3 cedis total gives us 70 cedis left. 70/3 =23.33333333
the 2 cedis the girl kept/3=6.6666667
now we have 33.3333pesewas and 66.666667 pesewas
addition of these two gives as the (1CEDI)
therefore THE ONE CEDI CAN BE FOUND IN BOTH THE MONEY THE GIRL KEPT AND THE MONEY PAID.

  11. Ha guess im going to be bowed down to. If you carefully read the passage it says waitress which is more then one so there had to be two waiters.

  12. The calculation is wrong. Since the waitress gave back $3, the final contribution of the guys, $72, is what paid for the drinks and the tip for the waitress. Adding another $2 means the guys paid the $24 each plus an extra $2, which is not correct. I hope I solved the puzzle.

  13. obour, that was really a gud one but focal point of this puzzle is the assumption that each of the guys paid ghc24 instead of ghc25. my argument is that, if we assume that each of the guys paid ghc24 then the total is ghc72 and the only change due them was ghc2 and not ghc5 which then erases the tip to the waitress. however, if we agree that they actually paid ghc25, then yes a change of ghc5 was due them. now let’s not forget that they were given ghc3 to share amongst themselves i.e ghc1 each and the remaining ghc2 which adds up to make a change of ghc5 was kept by the waitress. so in conclusion, there is no ghc1 to be sort for. thanks

  14. the one Ghana Cedi has been given to the guys from your analysis, (remember that they were given back GH1) in addition to the one cedi each given to the individuals

  15. Ok Mr. Obour, here’s how it goes:

    Initial drink price: 75
    Initial contribution: 25×3 = 75
New drink price 70+2 (mind you, the guys have no idea that the waitress took 2ghc for herself. so to then, the cost of the drink is GH72).

Now, how much do you think 3 people will contribute to get 72? We can find out by dividing 72 by 3, and this give us 24.

CONCLUSION: The need to pay 72ghc for the drink so they had to contribute 24ghc each. (The waitress chobo is inclusive in that GH72, i.e 70+2). There’s therefore no need to add another 2ghc for the waitress cos it has already been added. To get the initial 75 they contributed, just add their new contribution but the amount they got back. That is 24+24+24 = 72, then add the amount they received back =3. Now 72+3 = 75. Case closed! SHALOM!

  16. The cost of the beer is GH70.. Putting it simple and not complicating it. Gh75 was given. So 5 cannot be divided. So the tender took 2 gh, they gave 3gh to those guys. So if u luk in one way. 72 with the tender! 3 with those guys leading to total of 75!

  17. The whole problem is that your analysis is wrong. First let’s assume that all of the guys have exactly gh25 initially. No more no less. And that they are the first customers so there is no money in the cash box or whatever you want to call it. Our last assumption is that the waitress does not have any money on her.
Ok, now initially they give the waitress 75. She realises the drink is 70 and decides to give them Gh3 since 5 is not perfectly divisible by 3. She gives them the 3 puts, Gh 70 into the cash box and keeps 2 for herself. Now let’s add up everything. 70 in cash box plus 2 in waitress’ pocket plus 3 in the guys pockets=75. No money missing. There is no problem.
