Ghanaian Actors And Actresses Aiming For Hollywood: Ambition or Delusion?

blank
The Perfect Picture

In recent times, a substantial amount of Ghanaian actors and actresses have expressed their desire in breaking into the Hollywood film industry, and achieving mainstream success. A few of these actors and actresses dream of such grand success with just a few movies under their belts, whilst others have conveyed their aspirations in working with some of the big names in Hollywood.

With the huge difference between the Hollywood and Ghollywood acting credentials, it may be safe to say that the only shot some of these Ghanaian actors and actresses have in Hollywood may be as extras- even those roles would most likely be difficult for them to secure, but if achieved, would surely be a career highlight for them.

There is no doubt that Hollywood and Ghollywood cannot be compared to one another- Hollywood is way ahead of us. Not only in terms of having been around much longer than Ghollywood and its status as the world’s leading film industry, but also due to the high quality of acting portrayed by its actors, and the advanced technological implementation in their movies.

Although Ghollywood has made a substantial amount of progress, and can be rated as one of the most successful film industries on the African continent, to try and compete with the big guns of Hollywood does not only seem like a dream far beyond reach but also, a delusional fantasy.

The most evident obstacles standing in the way of our Ghanaian actors and actresses includes a considerable lack of experience, but there are also aspects which are beyond our control, such as a lack of monetary funds- there is no competition regarding the budget of a First World country (USA) against that of a Third World Country like Ghana. However, aspects of Ghollywood which are definitely not too much of a task to improve include the acting ‘skills’ of our actors and actresses- emotional scenes where actors are supposed to be ‘crying’ are filled with nothing but over-the-top hysterical screams, without any sign of actual tears, whilst ‘fighting’ scenes resemble a playground tussle between school children.

These are just some of the under par performances that make the idea of a Ghollywood actor in Hollywood quite laughable. There is no doubt that Ghana has produced some of the best actors and actresses on the African continent- evident by the number of African Movie Academy Awards won by Ghanaian actors and actresses. Yet, we must remain realistic enough to remember that the African movie industry and the Hollywood movie industry are on completely different ends of the spectrum, and if Ghanaian actors truly harbour desires of stepping foot on a Hollywood film set then they need to raise their game- majorly raise their game.

We know our actors and actresses are good- so good they are taking over the African movie industries, but they need to find alternative (and better) ways of expressing their emotions onscreen. Why not ensure that their body language is co-ordinated with the words they speak? Why not actually become ACTORS and ACTRESSES rather than obsessing about looking good onscreen?- even Beyonce Knowles had to act like a psycho in ‘Obsessed’- paying no mind to how she looked, her focus was on giving her audience the most realistic performance possible.

What the majority of Ghanaian actors are failing to realise is that it is not enough to simply take on a role as someone else- acting has several different layers. Lacklustre and clichéd performances may be able to cut it in Ghollywood, but to reach the bright lights of Hollywood; they need to step their game up!

  2. A huge Delusion indeed- In their dreams to even think hollywood will give their useless asses a second look, they wouldnt even land a role in the lowest budget movie. Nyame empe wu.

They should stick to their useless soft porn acting – Venus Production and their useless movies is the farthest you will go. The only actors (actors or actresses) with any potential is Chris Attoh, Adjettey Anang and maybe Majid (if he is selection on what he puts on his CV like Chris Attoh is)- as for the actresses NOBODY and ABSOLUTELY nobody – maybe Akorfa Asiedu but thats it. All the other actresses in ghana movie industry Jackie, Nadia and all the ashawo talentless ones are useless – useless in an understatement – cos they put the U in useless.

  3. It is doable but a very long shot. I live in LA and you would not believe how many stars there are. Walk down Hollywood and almost everyone is an aspiring actor.
Let me give you an example. VIN DIESEL from fast and furious sequel is even struggling to gt roles. LL COOL J had been struggling to get roles for years until recently. THE ROCK had to stoop to making kiddie movies to get roles.
Not to shatter anyone’s dreams but we should faces the reality. Even actors born, bred, and trained in Hollywood can get roles how much more a foreigner. It takes more that been in front of the cameras to be a Hollywood stars. JEAN CLAUDE VAN-DAM was dumped like hot cake. Now he has to result to kickboxing. That goes to tell you how competitive Hollywood is. N e way, it is still doable.

  5. umm common guys..i have been living in the states most of my life and i dnt knw maybe thats the reason i love watching african movies so much and altho the recent trend towards soft porn disturbs me, i dnt blame the actors as much as i blame the producers and writers. an actor can onli do what they r told to the best of thier ability n yall must remmber they r not the one’s putting these things out there. now maybe alot of them cannot act period and do need training n as an aspiring actor myself i cannot overemphasize the importance of trianing, where will they get said training n who will be teaching it, as most of the actors r looking out for number one n not the industry as a whole…they all aspire to go to hollywood when they could be dreaming of making what we got become credible n noticeable by hollywood. we all need to work to make the industry noticeable so that dreams of branching into places like hollywood become realistic….as it stands i blame poor writing and producers and lack of imagination for our poor state….and this soft porn crap they have been serving us has got to stop

  6. Delusion for sure, as someone pointed out if vin diesel is struggling to get roles how much more a foreigner, it might be possible but also a long shot.

  7. All u haters can go to hell for all i care.I have been a lot of Hollywood movies and most of them are pointless. One actress for sure i know can act in Hollywood is Jackie cos she is too good an actress. I’d rather watch Ghollywood movies over and over than those stupid and useless Hollywood craps. I think some of our actors and actresses like Majid and Jackie are as good as or even better than those Hollywood crap of actors. If there is one way at all that may disqualify some of our finest acts from acting in Hollywood, then it could only be skin race. Whites always look down on blacks on basis of skin color.

Majid and Jackie, if not better than Hollywood acts are as good as them.

  10. Theses people would not be able to go to hollywood because you need something called talent which they don’t have. And in order to be like Tom Cruise or Gabourey Sidibe you need talent.
