I Wanted To Change GoalKeeper Kingson Before The Penalty Shoot-Out-Ghana’s Coach

Ghana head coach Milovan Rajevac has revealed he thought of taking off Richard Kingson before the penalty shoot-out against Uruguay on Friday night.

The West Africans were knocked out in the quarterfinals after losing 4-2 on penalties to Uruguay at the Soccer City Stadium after playing to a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Stephen Ahorlu warmed up briefly during extra time and some Ghanaian journalists explained to KickOff.com that he could have fared better in the shoot-out than Kingson.

“Everything happened so fast. I thought about changing the goalkeeper but I didn’t. I was thinking of someone who could do well for us in the penalty shoot-out,” Rajevac revealed.

Despite the loss, Rajevac had nothing but praise for his boys. The Black Stars were the youngest team in this tournament, with eleven Under-23 players and Rajevac says the future looks bright for Ghana.

“I’m very proud we managed to get this far. We didn’t deserve to lose. It is very difficult for me to talk about this, because we lost. But we are proud of what we achieved. This team has a great future,” he said.

“I think we had more opportunities than our opponents. We also had big support from all of Africa and this could have been a fairytale if we won this game,” Rajevac continued.

Rajevac admitted the Uruguayans were mentally tougher than his players in the shoot-out. “I think the opponents had the psychological advantage. They were calmer than we were,” he said.

  1. Then why didn’t he do it? Kingston threw himself to the right many times. The Uruguayan keeper studied the legs of our players before moving. All the best for us next time.

    • @basoah george.,the laws of the game syas that u can’t change a goalkeeper unless he’s hurt n can’t continue.when it gets to such situations, it’s difficult to think straight.who says the other keeper could have done any better?
if we had scored all our kicks we’ll have won cos they also missed one.

  5. Look, I am grateful for Olele’s honor to country , under such pressure I’d probably bulk and cry so defy not taking that away from him okay.

But what I saw in his eyes, the stoic quite of his expression upon the equalizing goal just killed me and Im sure it was seen by Uruguay….do the math.
Now, I remember Olele being a lot more positive minded after such strikes, I remember the Olele of Can 2008 who’d scream a taikwondo scream and rally his mates to vim up their game….Aholu is just as good as Kingson and coach should have trusted his instincts. That’s all Im saying, no vex, Im VERY PROUD of my guy, I just think GFA ought to do something about the Goal Keepers thing so we don’t turn into La Cote De Voir or England (good team but few keepers).

  7. Fellow Ghanians, let’s all appreciate what these boys did. Many will agree with me that it is not Gyan’s fault that we didn’t move on. Our chance was taken by that idiot SUAREZ… If all of us will work together, then i will suggest we inform FIFA to have that SUAREZ BOY appolgise to Ghana, Africa , the Ghana Black Stars and FIFA. His country should also do likewise. Also FIFA should have him pay a fine not less than $25,000, at least $50,000. There are rules in the game and SUAREZ went against it by using his hands in the post. Only Goalkeepers are allow in that area to use their hands. (JUST LIKE A BANK CLERK PUTING MONEY BROUGHT TO THE BANK INTO HIS POCKET). LOVE YOU BOYS. WELL DONE!!!!!!!! YOU ARE ALL THE BEST.

  9. this is definitely not the time for had i knowns. because the truth of the matter is the referee should have giving us a point instead of a penalty. our boys were on pressure, they had the whole of Africa watching. Kingson has played a great role in this world cup, i would say 4 yrs ago too but i really didn’t pay attention 2 him. i always said Kingson is one of the Best goal keepers i know… Ghana be grateful for what God has done for us. Coach need to stop all of this n keep praising the boys. i love you Blackstars and i love u more, Gyan, Kingson, Ayew n Prince-Boateng. this just wasn’t out time but our time is right around the corner and we will SHINE as never before. GOD BLESS GHANA AND ALL OF AFRICA!!!!!!!!
