Did Nollywood Really Help Ghallywood?

NollywoodWe have had enough of the feud between the two fake woods, Nigeria’s Nollywood and Ghana’s Ghallywood. I would make this ‘piece as short as possible’ and give readers the chance to voice out their views. Keep comments clean, any verbal assault and senseless comments will be deleted (thanks for the understanding).

Imposition of the $1,000 fee on Nigerians

Ghallywood is not being fair. Why should Ghanaians force Nigerian actors to pay $1,000 before they are allowed to shoot in Ghana, does it really worth it? They should be taxed rather than the fee.

Did Nollywood really help Ghallywood?

They always cry out; ‘after raising Ghanaian movies from the mud’. Most Nollywood gurus often talk about how they have made the Ghana film industry what it is today. Did this really happen, how was it done? (By giving Ghanaian actors the chance to be in Nigerian movies).

There is one name they keep citing as an example, ‘Van Vicker’. Have they forgotten that Van doesn’t feature in Ghanaian movies anymore? I mean he is a Ghanaian but works in Nollywood. How did Van’s appearance in Nigerian movies help to improve Ghanaian movies?

If Ghanaian actors go to Nollywood, they go there as individuals and return in the same way. Will Nigerian producers allow Ghanaian acts to feature in their movies if they don’t need them? If no, then what is the noise about!

I mean if Majid is given the opportunity to star in a Hollywood movie, how does it help the Ghanaian film industry? Any of the woods can help each other by industrial means and not individuals.

So what is next?

Nollywood must stop bragging. Nowadays, Nigerian faces don’t even sell much in Ghana. Probably, Nollywood has helped Ghallywood in a way but their current point doesn’t hold much water. Both countries must find a way of reducing piracy and produce high quality movies. Nollywood and Ghallywood can look great together if both decide to work in harmony rather than looking for the best ‘fake wood’.

  2. i dont understand their problem i ve got a nigerian friend who tells me when she used to watch inspector bediako and some of our very old ghanaian movies in nigeria when she was younger . this was even before all this “nollywood ” fuss. she told me how her family used to enjoy these movies. the nigerians only took what we had and manged to build on it. today ghana is also building on what they.ve done so what is their problem. didnt we start aafrican movies before them. the “i told u so “and thing were even more popular than these movies they are talking about where was nolly wood at that time

Im Ghanaian and hey we dont have to be “my motherland” about this……Nollywood has really really helped Ghallywood…….and the fact still remains that Nollywood movies and stars have gone too far. there was an article i read where Van said he will be dump to compare his acting to RMD and another where Majid said he will die with joy the day he gets to act with Genevive…….hey fellas they helped us and stop hating on them for nothing. Hating will only hold Ghallywood back from reaching where Nollywood has read……..Cheers

  5. the answer is nooooooo….nollywood didn’t help GHALLYWOOD in any form of way…the likes of Ramsey Noah, RMD, Jim Iyke can be compared to Magid, Prince boateng, john dumelo any day…ppl use da fact that some of these stars have been in the industry for long to their advantage as if da new bees is not up to their counter parts…both industry r not different from each other and both of them r not any better…some say they helped produced our movie…dats quite funny cuz most of our producers r all ghanaians…all over the world, names like jackie appiah, john dumelo, magid, all rings bell to their fans…nollywood likes to brag and crown themselves as if they r the best…but no one is crowning them as the best…all their movies r crappy with same story lines lol, just like how they feel all ghanaian movies are crappy…lol

  6. Hahahha…… Nollywood indeed. Go back and cross check your facts. Ghana was way up the make believe ladder before the advent of the so call Nollywood. If you guys could be self reliance as that Duru of a guy who even has some background in Ghana is blabbing about, then why invade our country with all sorts of excuses.
The only thing you guys should be credited with is rebranding the industry and helping any body.

  7. One thing in dis world is no one can twist facts no matter how hard u try.So wat will solve dis problem is let everyone work in their country. The Ghanaian stars who do most of their movies in Naija like Van,Jackie,John,Nadia etc. & Naija directors like Frank Rajah Arase,Pascal Amanfo and the rest of the Nigerian crew who ply their trade in Ghana shd alll now work in their respective countries so dat we see which movie industry will break up.

    Reply
    • @TheChuckylee, nice point there but the only ghanaian actor that do most of his work in 9ja is only van vicker but i haven’t heard from him lately..the rest u mentioned do most of their work in ghana not naija.. i don’t even know why all those naja directors and crew prefer to work in ghana than their own country..can’t they use their talent to help their own country?….I mean why even ghana, why not togo, ivory coast, kenya, sudan, lol etc?.I JUST DON’T GET IT.and yes we will all see which movie industry breaks up once they begin to work in their respective countries..Trust, I definately will have me a long hard laughter.

  8. It just cracks me up when I here the naijas say nollywood made van, jackie, john, majid, juliet, yvonne etc..they say etc oo, which etc r u talking about?haha..Then I ask, can u make a list of the movies these actors featured in that made them, and they can’t give me a list..why? because the movies that made all these stars were all done in ghana..beyonce and divine love brought majid, jackie, and van to stardom..whatever movies they’ve featured in naija that made them popular for the naijas to complain all the time, I am yet to know oo..to be honest, among the million+ movies van has done in naija, I can’t even remember none of them cuz it just didn’t do it for me..you can only boast of something when u see great outcome and not jaga jaga outcome…van went backward wen he started working in naija…they pampered him so much to the point that he actually thought he was that good to start making his own movies..”van has arrive, give wayyyy” lol..after all he was made in nollywood, yeeahhhhhh…that one de3 nollywood can boast of not the rest..all this noise comes to one thing PRIDE.

My GH brodas and sistas don’t worry wa3..Now we all know and can see why our movie industry is still on SQUARE ONE..we got help from Nollywood the 3rd largest movie industry in the world and we’re still at P- school, yeaahhh us..we got a long long way to graduate..hmmmmm 🙁

NOBODY GAAVE A SHYT ABOUT THEIR MOVIES – until the eloquent articulate ghanaians started starring in the movies to give them clout cos they whole world understand our accent better. I have witness many times where Jamaicans or African americans in african stores here in USA will specifically ask for movies with at least one ghaniaan actor or actress cos THEY DONT UNDERSTAND THE NIGERIANS ACCENT. So i dont k now what the hell they are talking about. They should be grateful to us. ITS THEIR ARROGANCE AND BRAGGING THAT IS GETTING ON MY DAMN NERVES. BRAGGING LIKE the whole african continent they started acting movies first.

  16. i didn’t want to comment but with the funny things being said here i decided to do otherwise. Nollywood has helped the ghanaian movie industry in all sort of ways and it continues to help it even till today, before i start making specifics on the areas and how nollywood has helped i will like to do a little bit touching on a subject which i have already discussed here before, i hear some of u say ok since nollywood helped us that is why we are still on square one, now i ask this question where were those ur film makers whom u beieve would have taken u to square hundred when the ghanaian movie industry was asleep and unnoticed, where were the like of ur shirley, leila, emmanuel apea when ur movies didn’t cross the borders of ghana, now the nigerians came and jump started ur movie industry it has now become a square one industry to u forgeting that even hollywood and bollywood started from square one before the got to where they are now, they didn’t just advance to the level the are now without some trials and error, yes i admit nollywood does a lot of crappy movies which with there influence also transcended to the ghanaian movie industry, but that does not take out the fact that nollywood gave the ghanaian movie industry something to build from and also brought it to a wider recognition, i have also heard some of u keep refering to past glorious movies like heritage africa, love brewed in an african pot etc first of all since ur movie industry is better than nollywood and u do better movies why didn’t ur movie industry continue making such movies like the ones mentioned above till date(that is till this present day), secondly in those days when the above movies were made nigeria and most other african countries did good movies of high standard aswell, i don’t know about the other african countries but nollywood is not still duelling in those past glorious movies, afterall as an artist u are as good as ur last release, so if u guys don’t keep up to the race then stop living in past glories, we are in the present not the past, u out do ur past success which is what nollywood is doing with such movies like ije, laviva, inale, the figurine etc. Now i will mention areas where nollywood has helped the ghanaian film industry and this is not a made up something, these are evidences u guys can even see for urselves:acting- initially nollywood stars used to star in ghanaian movies in other for it to make it to the nigerian market and to wider audience(that is outside nigeria and ghana),directing-95% of the ghanaian english movies(which are the ones that crosses the ghanaian borders) are directed by nigerians,producing-some ghanaian hit movies are produces by nigerians(ex: trinity, the game, naked faces, shakira etc),sreenwriters-most ghanaian english hit movies are screenplayed by nigerians,score-some ghanaian movies are scored by nigerians(ex: austin erowele),dop(director of photography)-some ghanaian movies have nigerian dop (ex: tunde adekoya), and the most important areas of all marketing and distribution, nolly markets and distributes allmost all ghanaian english movies, it might be marketed and distributed in ghana by production houses such as venus,aa, heroes etc but in nigeria, and across africa it is done by nollywood, and also abroad nollywood markets and distributes these ghanaian english movies through companies like sanga, franco, and executive image(these are ofcourse owned by ngerians), don’t get me wrong there are other nigerian and ghanaian companies but the above three are the biggest.Ok i respect movies like live brewed in an african pot, heritage africa, these movies even though winning international awards did not make much inroads and impact, haile gerima movie teza won the fespaco award last year, now let me ask u all, how much impact did that movie make despite it being of international standard, let me further explain my point, ask people around u there in ghana who in there thirties and twenties about heritage africa, love brewed in an african pot etc then ask those same set of people(they would probably be in their late fifties and sixties by now) about beyonce, mummy’s daughter etc u will notice that they know more of the later movies, yes abdul salam is a ghanaian but u know what he needed the nollywood infleunce to do the majic for him,why didn’t he use the ghanaian directors or ghanaian crew or the ghanaian market to project his movies since nollywood didn’t help the ghanaian movie industry, before the nigerian collaboration and influence, nothing much about the ghanaian movie industry was known except for the few past glories u all continue to dwell in,it was when the nigerians stepped in that the ghanaian movie industry started getting some form of recognition, and i hear someone say nollywood is jelous, jelous of what, is nollywood jelous that they are teaching ur movie indsutry the trade, jelous that they are richer, jelous that the are bigger, jelous that they are accomodate ur stars, jelous that they are more popular, or jelous that they make more quality films, jelous of what actually.Let me explain something for u guys, bollywood got more recognition when it started collaborating with hollywood,so yes featuring in nollywood movies makes ghanaian artist career bigger because it gives them more exposure since they are working in a bigger industry and ofcourse get paid better.

  17. Lets make things clear here, the only reason Van went to act with nija people in Nigeria is because he couldn’t compete with majid. Before it was van all the time, eventhough i did not really like his acting, when Majid came in, it was so clear and obvious that Majid was the best, out of fear and disgrace, he run to naja and started acting for them. All the same, we all know back in 2001-2003, everybody was talking about nigerian movies, and we all ghanains were so happy about that, but as the sayings goes, the first shall always be the last.

  19. i couldnt agree with this article any more. NIGERIA DID NOT HELP GHANA IN ANY WAY. You might have helped the individual actor but you didnt help GOLLYWOOD as a whole so quit your bull talk and concentrate on how to improve the quality and sound of your movies. btw Yvonne nelson became popular after she starred in a GHANAIAN MOVIE TITLLED ” PRINCESS TYRA. and NOT a NIGERIAN MOVIE. Van vicker became well known after he starred in a GHANAIAN MOVIE SHOT IN GHANA TITLED ”BEYONCE” and NOT in a NIGERIAN MOVIE. Majid michel has always acted GHANAIAN MOVIES , he started off with DIVINE LOVE alongside JACKIE APPIAH AND NOT NIGERIAN(well for the nigerian i dunno if he has tbh cos i dont watch nigerian movies anymore)moving on to new faces we’ve got Jocelyn dumas again the first time i got to know about her was in the new movie series ADAMS APPLE which is currently getting aiplayed here in london on the tv channel kleartv as you might know she was also the video girl in lynxx song! So my point is if they all didnt become popular starting off in Ghana then how did nigeria even find out about them?! Now the thing is Ghana is producing high quality movies with new faces forget about jackie appiah and van vicker we have new faces now that are making it. Nigerians on the other hand are getting intimidated by these new people and so to make themselves better are trying to take credit for their work. how many times do you hear of a nigerian coming to premiere their movies in ghana? whereas the Ghanaian counterpart will premiere in London, in the U.S, south africa, seirra leone, canada, Ghana and even to Nigeria so they are getting known everywhere by doing this and they are doing it on thier own. They shoot their movies in Ghana but now Nigerians will come all the way to Ghana to shoot simple movie, what happened to your nigeria?? anyways goodluck to the two woods im happy Ghana is coming out now, now we should be looking up to South africa and learn from them. oh and the girls here in london love a bit off van vicker, john dumelo, majid michel and frank and chris atto. And i also think yvonne okoro, lydia forson and all the cast in adams apples are really good. Goodluck in the future.

  20. So I was reading your article didn’t at all agree with anything on it but you had a fair enough argument until you got to the part where you said

“I mean if Majid is given the opportunity to star in a Hollywood movie, how does it help the Ghanaian film industry?”

Explain to me how it doesn’t help the Ghanaian movie industry? If he acts in an American movie and does really well or really poorly people are still gonna ask who is that light skinned guy and where is he from. Eventually they’ll find out he has other movies of Ghanaian decent and watch them, when they watch the other movies they’ll like another Ghanaian actor and possibly get hooked on Ghanaian movies.

Unless, there’s another approach your argument doesn’t hold much water (or any water at all)

    Reply
  21. So I read your comment, valid argument. But think about it… Ghanaians always made movies right?
And Van and Nadia and Majid all started out with ghanaian movies right?
And the movies they became popular for are all Ghanaian movies, not so?
All of those are a given

But let’s trace it back a minute… Ghanaians always made movies pre-2005,6 but nobody knew about these movies except Ghanaians, their immediate families and people who went the extra mile. Truth be told most Africans watched Nigerian movies

Around 2005-6, the ban on Nigerian actresses and actors came about. All the big names were wiped out and we literally had no one to watch. So we started watching Ghanaian movies. From Princess Tyra to Beyonce and all the rest.

Focusing in on only Ghana and Nigeria now, Nigerians turned to Ghanaian movies. One person watched and recommended. I remember Beyonce was a recommendation from an avid Nollywood viewer. The conversation went something like no more Genevieve movies, I saw this good Ghanaian movies.

So much so that after the ban was lifted, most Nigerian viewers (home and diaspora) had imbibed a Ghallywood culture. And that is how, the way I see it, Ghallywood blew up. Fans of Nollywood nationwide and worldwide, incorporated Ghanaian movies into their movie-plate because they had no other options and they grew to like it.

So even if Nollywood didn’t help Ghallywood directly, Nollywood still helped Ghallywood like it or not
