Fashion & Lifestyle: 2 Ways to Make your Own T-Shirts

blank

In a world of consumerism often times the art of creating with our own hands is left for the gifted and talented. Long gone are the days that we sit with friends and make flutes out of the leaves of coconut trees. I am sure you miss creating that special fan or a hand held broom made from the leaves of palm-nut tree branches.

I quite remember a time that my cousin was the best at creating a battery operated toy car with recycled milk cans, chale-wate(flip-flops). Our hands when encouraged can bring a smile to our faces, which is why by the end of this article you will learn how to create your own stylish shirt.

Items needed are:

  • T-shirt
  • Scissors

Funky cut up t-shirts are a fun easy way to have fun with a boring plain jersey. Place the t-shirt on a flat surface, have a pair of scissors on hand envision your t-shirt creation. The collar of the shirt can be shaped in a semi circle, triangular, jagged or left as is; just remember to cut it short in the beginning to curtail undesired results. Transforming the sleeves can mean cutting spaghetti-strap sized strands towards the edge of the seam.

You may also choose to do away with the sleeves and shape it into equal crescent shaped sleeve(similar to a tank-top what we in Ghana call singlet). Then comes the shape forming finale, choose the side you want to cut up and shape like the back of the shirt. Cut about five ruler sized strands going east to west, cut these individual strands down the middle and process to tie them in knots to your desired form fitting shape.

  • Plain white t-shirt
  • Favorite color dye
  • Rubber bands

Okay some of you may have guessed where this is headed, bravo, believe me this fashion skill will make your future kids smile when you show them your tie and dye skill. Gather various parts of the plain white t-shirt and tie the rubber bands to it. You may choose to have the rubber bands tied like a log, triangular, or just one knot. Put your knotted t-shirt into the boiling water for approximately 5 minutes. Carefully take out the t-shirt and have your favorite color dye ready.

Place desired drops of the color dye at the rubber band portions of the t-shirt. Upon completion, dry the freshly dyed knotted t-shirt in the sun until it is dry. The t-shirt will seem wrinkled as you begin to remove the rubber bands(you may iron without the water steamer). Surprise yourself and create your masterpiece today.
