Fashion & Lifestyle: Flashback, All Things Ghanaian

blank

Our common history as people would not be complete without delving into to the fashion of yesteryear. Which is why with your help, we can develop a top ten necessities in past decades. Please enjoy and feel free to add to this research dubbed “all things Ghanaian”.

Starting with the 1990’s: The Akosua Agyapong Hairstyle, picture a roller set head of hair being brushed up top and curled back down in a mushroom design. This musical icon made it work to the point that, some fans who didn’t have a lot of hair improvised and wore a hair band backward to emphasize the mushroom depth at the back of the hair.

Followed by the 1980’s: Nana Acheampong might have used to rock this Geri Curl that put the Coming to America actors to shame. I mean it was just massive and with his dance moves, his hairstyle gained a huge gravity which brought a rise in beauticians gaining male clientele.

For the 1970’s: wearing an afro was a license to display your kinky hair pride. Ghana is known to be hospitable which could very well have come from this 1960’s necessity:

Fathiya Fata (compliments) Nkrumah Kente clothe, its colours resemble the love of the people for their First Lady Fathiya Nkrumah and the shine of the clothe recognizes the rich love between her and His Excellency Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

I have not been able to pinpoint who created this rich clothe, though it was known to be shrouded in a bit of controversy-after the coup-, according to a Kente saleswoman I met in Bonwire it remains one of the best selling Kente series.

1940’s-1900’s Ghanaian lifestyle necessity has to have been boycotting, rallying, sit-ins, strike that built up to our independence in 1957.blank

Arguably the most long lasting flashback of the time is Highlife, it was created in Osu by musicians who wanted to capture the fantastical life some seemed to be living.

Pictures used are as follows:

  • The classic Afro (upper left)
  • Hair threading or plaiting which has remained timeless (lower right)
  • Fathiya Fata Nkrumah Kente with picture of the First Lady with one of the children(I think its Samia).
  • Hair threading or plaiting which has remained timeless
  • A typical hair band of the 90’s worn backwards to capture the Akosua Agyapong hairstyle
  • I tried to find the exact Akosua Agyapong video/album cover with the hairstyle but to no avail, however this picture comes closest to the style
  • The same goes for Nana Achaempong but the Geri Curl pictured with this footballer resembles the style
  • Thanks to Getty Images, the location of where Highlife was created is captured Osu Highstreet aka Oxford Street
