Weekly Discussion: Lets Get Talking- Social Issue: McDonalds Is Coming To Ghana In 2011, A Blessing Or A Curse? Development Or Obesity?

It was reported by the Business Guide Newspaper today that some prominent Ghanaian entrepreneurs residing in UK and USA have teamed up and managed to get hold of McDonald’s franchise to start operation in Ghana.

Spots like Kotoka International Airport, Osu , Accra Mall and Spintex Road  will see the face of McDonalds in 2011.

McDonalds primarily sells french fries, soft drinks, burgers, chicken products, milks shakes (my favourite but I am not fat yet) and deserts.

Over the last few years, various health organizations in western countries where McDonalds is already in massive operation have criticized their food. Obesity is a common thing most attribute to McDonalds.

Some people have tagged McDonalds as cheap food restaurant spreading obesity and various health problems.

They are coming to our dearest Ghana. My left eye sees development, employment and cheap food on our streets. My right eye is digging deep into obesity, various health issues and poor standard of operation.

We already have HIV, Malaria, TB and other health issues that we insufficiently battling with our inadequate resources and personnel.

Considering the fact that we have more than enough already made food like Kenkey, “Kelewele”,  “Atormo” and co on our streets all the time, do we really need McDonalds in Ghana? What do you think they will bring to us at large, obesity or development? Let’s get talking…… Before you comment, read this last thing …

“The US fast food industry and health campaigners are watching closely a lawsuit filed on behalf of several obese teenagers who claim the fast-food company McDonald’s is responsible for making them fat…..”

“The lawsuit, filed by lawyer Samuel Hirsch in a Manhattan federal court, alleges that McDonald’s violated New York state’s consumer fraud statutes by deliberately misleading consumers into thinking their cheeseburgers and other products were healthy and nutritious-BBC”

  1. I dont really think its a good idea. This is because all these Mcdonalds foods aint healthy. Then they might rather want to carry some healthy foods in there. They should go and pollute our dear nation with all those unhealthy and obese food.Let it stay wherever it is.
Above all what pisses me off is, half of the share or even more would go to all these white foreigners. They just tryna be smart because they ve realised how Ghana is developing gradually.
Let us enjoy our fried yam, kelewele and hausa koko

Mcdonalds IS NOT NEEDED in Ghana.

macdonalds may not be healthy but neither is the fast food we serve here, the main reason why americans get obese from macdonalds is because they est a lot of it almost everyday, americans live on junk food but we dont.the ghanaian will just buy it occassionally and dat wont make him obese.imagine eatin papaye or frankies or fast food almost everyday of course u r going to explode.my main concern is not obesity but our olcal fast food businesses who might loose customers because the famous macdonalds have come to ghana.our local industries need money

      Reply
    • i agree with resus i think the main issue here is not obesity am ghanaian n am going to college in america ryt now n i have observed that americans are just fat n obese because of lifestyle choices, patterns that are very different from ghanaians.
anyone who has eaten macdonalds or kfc will notice that the quantity is less than that of our fast foods like papaye. and as far as am concerned fast food is fast food everywhere..so what we have here is just as bad
da only diffrence is dat we dont live on fast food like ppl from the west do we mix it with home food so theres a balance that reduces obesity

    • madam social unfortunately food and drugs board will not take a look at it
come its ghana and foreign investors,no other one to done macdonalds wants to invest n u think dey will say no
      sorry
even america’s govt hasnt been able to regulate macdonalds business ways
it will be very odd, and very foolish (speaking from a business perspective) FOR food n drugs board 2 say no
n i agree wif wat ppl r sayin dat its not abt macdonalds ,its abt fast food in general.
i mean macdonals is in china, japan, south africa, and other southern american nations but u dont see dem complainin about obesity
americans r dat way because of their lifestyles
i dont think macdonalds in a few places in accra will cause an obesity pandemic in ghana
come on be realistic, nevertheless i prefer papaye to macdonalds

  2. Good one there Adjoa and thanks for bring this to our attention Chris. I personally live in UK and I do not eat Mcdonalds, neither do I allow my daughter to do so. The food is not healthy and it is like a glue, children get addicted to it and they become obsessed.

Even in this country, they are regretting it here and they want to push it into our dear country. Ghanaian children in Ghana already have their own issues, malaria and others are killing us, we do not want another disease to be added to the six killer disease. Let us say No to McDonald in Ghana

    • U r right Tracy, thanks for supporting that idea.Although ppl. r saying its all about the eating patterns but yet still Mcdonalds is part of it.And to ama if you think you can call those ppl in the food and drugs board foolish, then u might wanna adress a letter to them.

  4. i work at novotel, and i have noticed that most tourists say our local food is very oily and complex.eg fufu, kenkey and baku are all complex starch and hence hard to digest if u know ur science well u will know dat it not da healthiest
our cuisine in general is not as healthy as we think, its only because we live much healthier in other ways that we are able to balance it off.so macdonalds here wont cause an obesity problem .we live diffrently and besides averagelly we cant afford to be eaten macdonalds a lot like da american does.so this is not an issue
the issues here are the effect it will have on our local food industries and if this will better our image as good business climate since macdonalds is one of the 3 most powerful companies in the world

    Reply
    • Abel the issue about the effects its going tp ve on our local food industry is not that valid.Afterall, that kenkey seller at the corner of the street (junction)still exist and makes her money although papaye has been estabilshed for so many years now.Its all about people and their choices, nobody would exchange kenkey to fries especially when they know what good its going to do to their body till the rest of the day. Also ,Nobody would also exchange hausa koko to milk shake when they know they both taste different.

Its unhealthy and thats what it is.And ofcourse they will just use all these funny and smart strategy to get the attention of the people.

i think u wrong adjoa,i mean seriously why call macdonalds unhealthy
when u havent called our fast food franchises unhealthy its all the same junk food
even our complex oily local cuisine isnt that healthy
the road siide food venders often dont sell healthy food to
so wats dis hypocrisy like we only eat healthy food in ghana

    • @abel, Abel I agree with you in the attractive business bit.

LETS FACE IT…the GHANAIANS WHO WILL EAT AND EAT AND GET FAT OFF OF McDonalds IN GHANA ARE THE RICH(which is like 2% of the Ghanaian population) So please folks lets keep it real, the average Ghanaian child/parent will probably only eat a BigMac once very 10years when it arrives OKAY!!!

  5. who care’s 4 me i c development be,cos most of our white tourist will rather prefer mc donald 2 our local food am a ghanaian but don’t think our local food is any better or nutricious than mc donald ‘s fast food they have varieties of meals to choose including salad’s and more conpare to our oily and greasy food we have in our country ghana, and more over most ghana’s are all obessy already with thier ignorance lifestyle choice of thinking fatness is beauty and is our culture so MR blogger mcdonald will not make it worse than it’s already is, we just need to change our set of mind and some lifestyle choice some of us choose to live.

    Reply
    • @Aisha,

Aisha, who is thinking backwards here? It is a discussion and we are all saying our minds so respect others opinion.

Mcdonalds in Ghana will not bring any development or anything. People talking about tourist who come to Ghana, if they come to Ghana and they come to meet another America, I mean Mcdonalds and co there, then what is their purpose of leaving America to come to Ghana? They are in Ghana because of out culture which includes our food, so that point you people are raising have no gravity. People with those point should come back again.

Obesity is not a joke and we are not talking about older men who have choices and have decided to eat greasy food to get fat or have some lifestyle to get fat. My concern most of children, who get hook to Mcdonalds like it is some cocaine, they will spend all their school money on it and by the time you know, we have fat children all walking around Ghana.

In America and other places, this is a big problem and most fast foods like Mcdonalds is the cause. If we have enough fast greasy foods restaurants in Ghana, then why do we want to make it more worse by adding Mcdonalds.

If the standard of food of Mcdonalds is even bad in America and co, how will it be in Ghana where they will not be inspected at all or on a constant base, it will be worst. We will be poisoned with expired and rotten chicken.

i agree that macdonalds will attract lots of customers but only those 3 branches plus our economic situation plus our lifestyle is not enough to cause an obesity pandemic
plus macdonalds r a burger n chips franchise ,they dont serve fried chicken n fried rice which ghanaians prefer, burger n chips is just not as popular

its cheap for the west but wen u change the dollar rates its more expensive than our fast food joints
n also the quantity is smaller than ours so its not goin to be worth the price for ghanaians
for instance the amount of food u get from papaye at 7ghana cedis is not equal to the amount u will get at macdonalds for 7 ghana cedis which is 5 dollars
so its not cheaper plus very few ghanaians eat fast food 3 tyms a day

knowing ghanaians we will not buy it almost everyday lyk americans
n we will not laze around n get fat lyk dey do
its not going to cause mass obesity
am surpirised ppl r thinking that alone will make ghana an obese country

  12. Not a bad idea!!!! I don’t think it will affect us especially if the Ghana government gives them some healthy food guidelines tht they should abide by. Also the reason fast food affects American a lot is because they don’t do a lot of exercise. A lot of Americans have the luxury of a car, bus and train. which we don’t in Ghana. There is a lot of walking to do and a lot of exercise/work tht we do during the day to actually not retain all tht fat.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU….SOME OF THESE PEOPLE ON THIS SITE ARE SO IGNORANT, IT IS ACTUALLY FUNNY TO READ SOME OF THEIR COMMENTS. THERE HAS TO BE A SCREENING BEFORE A PERSON MAKES A COMMENT TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE EDUCATED ENOUGH TO COMMENT.WHO DO I NEED TO TALK TO IN ORDER TO SEE THIS HAPPEN, MAYBE CHRIS? 😆 😆 😆 😳 😳 😆 😉

Ok, back to Nanayaa, you are not only right , but this will help build our economy because it will not only help by creating more jobs but also when people spend money…McDonald’s +Customers= Better Economy… Also with the unemployment rate in ghana, any decent job will help put food on people’s tables. I agree with what you said about our local food, I mean i don’t know the difference between fries and “kelewele” or fried yam….I also don’t know the difference between burgers and fried fish, meat, and chicken. I think what people should do is to be careful of how much they eat it, plain and simple. MODERATION IS THE KEY HERE…PEOPLE CAN EAT MCDONALD’S JUST LIKE JUST LIKE FUFU, JUST NOT IN LARGE QUANTITIES…

I THINK THE CITIZENS NEED TO BE EDUCATED ON FOOD PROPORTION….HOW MUCH PROTEIN(MEAT), CARBOHYDRATES,(SIMPLE[FRUITS, WHITE RICE], , AND COMPLEX,[ROOT VEGETABLES LIKE YAM, CASSAVA, POTATOES], BROWN RICE,ETC), VEGETABLES,DIARY, OIL, FATS A PERSON SHOULD EAT A DAY. EDUCATION AND EXERCISE IS THE ANSWER….BUT I AM ALL FOR MCDONALDS IN GHANA….COUNT ME IN…..

  14. Its Official, Ghana is now Westernising instead of Developing. I visited Kenya in May 2010 and found it extremely difficuflt to get some traditional Keynanian food. In fact I didn’t find any. Please don’t tell me that my own country is going the same way. When in Rome do as the Romes do, that’s all that im saying.
Perhaps we should try and franchise Papaye and as Kin states some dokono and kelewele in London’s shoping centres and airports and lets see how that goes down. This is not about obesity or health issues as we can find those issues in our own traditional food. This is about loosing our Identity. I am a Ghanian but born and raised in the UK, on my trip to Kenya’s Nairobi I also counted a handfull of people wearing traditional outfits. Now that says something about where as African’s are going. Lets be very careful. That all

    • @Thenewsjunky,
My friend, stop your ignorance. What is the difference between McDonald’s and our local food? Most ghanaians daily intake consists of carbohydrates, carbohydrates, carbohydrates, and large amounts of protein. How many of us eat: jollof, stew, peanut soup, kenkey, fufu, palm oil soup, cassava, yam, plantains, etc. Whether you like it or not, the food we eat are bad for us but we don’t know so we keep eating it. Diabetes is prevalent in ghana as it is in the West. It is just that people in the west have resources(hospital) to get early detection, whereas in ghana by the time they detect it it is too late. I know this because it took the lives of many of my family.

McDonald’s is bad just as much if not less than our local food. As I said moderation is the key. You have to enjoy life once in a while and indulge yourself, and eat whatever you want. Life is too short. . IIt is just important to exercise, eat vegetables and some fruits(not too much because some contain alot of natural sugar), and drink lots of water. You will be fine..This will be good for ghana overall. It will help our economy and create jobs.

  18. i agree with comments that the health concerns will not be a big issue with regards to maky d’s coming to GH. looking at the average cost of a maky d’s meal, it doesnt come cheap. i dont believe ghanaians will flock to maky d’s because it wont be affordable. and regarding the health concerns, surely in the west and the problems with the welfare state, the state pays for everything. ie im fat and cant work, u get benefits or even better, disability living allowance, im fat and need to gastric band operation, the nhs foots the medical bill. If you are obese and cant work in GH, you dont get any carers, benefits or an operation for free. If you get admitted at Gee or 37 and you aint got any money, they will keep you prisoner, until a good samaritan pays your bill. on the hand, as a business venture i admire the entrepreneurs and the potential for job creation is good news. its not all doom and gloom.

  23. It is interesting that no one want the McDonald’s in Ghana, but Ghanians like the American culture. The food don’t jump into people’s mouths, but yet people make a choice to buy the food. It is not forced on a person a person chooses to be obese, skinny, or whatever they feel when they pick up food. It is not the company that is producing the food but yet the consumers that choose to eat the food. What is the difference between McDonald’s and Papaya or Frankies or even Chicken Republic nothing all of this food is being bought by people who would like to eat it.

  24. Obesity do not just come from what you eat it is also genetic. There are those are slim in Africa, but is is because there foods are more pure. Even the natural fruits and vegetables have some type of hormone added to it. People can choose to be fat or skinny as long as they have the money to pay for it. America is the ‘now” generation if you want to eat yourself to death than they allow it but the commercials promote it as if you can get a surgery whenever you want to be skinny. So, therefore, it is up to you for how you wish to look. Don’t blame the food, blame the people who choose to eat the food.
