Genevieve Nnaji Was On CNN Yesterday, Which Actor/Actress In Ghana Do You Think Can Make It There?

blank

Undoubtedly, Nollywood is getting bigger and bigger and its stars like Genevieve Nnaji are going places.

Yesterday, Genevieve Nnaji was featured on CNN Connector and she talked about a lot of things.

One thing I was not feeling was when she said, she does not walk, she drives and for that matter she is SAFE on the streets of Nigeria. She further said, she will be mobbed if she had to walk. Oh come on Gen, who will mob you just because you are a star on the street?

I was proud to watch the interview as it highlights  the African (especially Nollywood) Movie industry, the success and the way forward.

Gen has made Nigeria and Africa proud and CNN has recognized her immense success and contribution to the African Movie industry.

My question is, in your own objective deduction, which Actress or Actor in Ghana do you think will be the first to make it to international platforms like CNN?

Watch Gen’s interview on CNN below…

  1. good for her. she is undoubtedly one of the best actresses in Africa. her acting is so believable, but i think she knows it and it has gotten into her head so much, she thinks she might be mobbed if she walks, geez. i dont know, im ghanaian, but is that what Nigerians do to stars? she is definately exagerrating. I THINK RAMSEY NOAH IS the BEST ACTOR IN AFRICA and he can also get international recognition.

GENEVIEVE is on a whole other level and is actually now good enough to get into hollywood.
I mean she was named by people magazine as Africa’s angelina jolie and has been called the most most powerful actress from africa, she was even on oprah
how many people in our industries can boast of that
    she takes her art seriously
    Congrats Genny

    • @lily,

No offense Lily but let me ask you a question. If it wasn’t for media how can artist get the publicity to expand his/her art work? I think media is the center of this entertainers work just like how American dollar is the center of universe. If ghanacelebrities.com or nigeriafilms.com doesn’t inform us on certain movies or albums release most of the African entertainers will by washed up.

I knew dis lady will be a star right from da day I watched her first movie. She’s my favourite Africa actress and undoubtedly the most successful actress on the continent currently.I hope all those cheap hoes parading as actresses who think stripping themselves nude on screen will get them 2 the top will learn from her.Over 10 yrs in the industry & still going strong.Congrats Genny.

  9. Apart from Majid – no body else – WE HAVE THE MOST USELESS YOUNG ACTRESSES – JACKIE, NADIA, MARTHA – who cannot ever compete with genevieve. Asem nu daho na waka – no need to beat around the bush. Jackie cant act for shyt, Nadia annoys me with her slanging, martha has potential but her nudity bullshyt especially since she is a newcomer. As a ghanaian I am saying all these up coming rubbish actresses need to look up to the best – the best in africa yet for an actress IS WAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE GENEVIEVE – if you dont agree go jump off a roof

    • I think that nudity keeps on increasing cuz it looks like a new trend and strategy used by movie directors and producers to increase their target market..I feel Genny was lucky enough to skip that part of “bullshyt” as you call it.Anyway our actresses are still learning and need to wise up thou.kinda agree with you.

    • I agree perfectly. Genevieve is in a class of her own. Even the top rated Nigeria actresses like Rita Dominic do not hold a candle to her. Majid is the only one who has the potential to make it far.The less said about Jackie Appiah,Nadia,Yvonne Nelson etc, the better. They can’t act their way out of a paper bag. Are people blind?

  10. Okay, Good question so far. I think ADJETEY ANANG would be likely to be interviewed on CNN but I can’t help but think someone from production side of things is more likely like LEILA DJANSI or even EMMANUEL APEA

    Reply
    • Oh yes I will agree with you on Emmanuel Apea.I feel he was the first person to bring some changes into the Gh mivie industry.I loved his “run baby run” movie. Was good!

  11. I didn’t want to comment but the fact is any good actress can get on CNN. It’s called PR you can get one, if you can afford one. Gene used her exposure on Oprah to get: #1. Mud cosmetics contract. #2.  She followed it up with an article in People Magazine and lastly got on a mainstream cable network. That’s how it’s done period. Personally I think she is overrated, why? No doubt she can act, but with the level that she is right now, she couldn’t express herself with good vocabularies. That’s sad! I felt sorry for the way she answered those questions.
She needs to take some classes and get a personal consultant who will educate her on how to express herself and also handle interview questions. If she’s the epitome of the best African Actress, then that’s too sad.  Casting directors who will watch her would be disappointed, simply because she can’t express herself.  When asked about her movie, she couldn’t even narrate the synopsis well. As an actress that’s very bad!  As I watched her, I asked myself can she express herself when given a major role in English, cause her English is very poor. Take some classes my dear and read to improve your vocabs… A side from that, its all-good congrat to her!
And oh Jackie has no chance my dear GC. And this is coming from industry personnel! The only GH act is probably Akofia or Majid that’s it! Sorry, but Ghana doesn’t have anything to offer to the west when it comes to the movie industry. Not even with your so-called best female directors that are making it big with 2nd year film student movies lol!

  13. So I went to watch “For Colored Girls” yesturday and man the movie was amazing and worth every little bit of the 2hrs+ I spent at the theatre. It was an emotional roller coaster from begining to end and the best movie from Tyler Perry i must say. All the ladies ang gents did their job. The way each one of them interpret their role was just extraordinary. At one point i forgot they were really acting. REAL TALENT I guess. One thing that kept ringing in my head was our own African actors especially ghanaian actors. I tried to compare the likes of Kimberly Elise, Loretta Devine, Janet Jackson, Thandie Newton, Whoopi Goldberg, Anika Noni Rose, Kerry Washington, Phylicia Rashad to our own actors and I was ashamed x5. It made me realise how funny and embarrasing our movie industry is. “they call that acting?” i said to myself. We are joking kuraa..I’m like how the hell did Yvonne Nelson got banned in this so-called industry? 3y3 yawa paa oo *shaking my head* The level of talent and acting skills these American actors have as compared to our own local actors is superb. Even a simple acting from whoopi Goldberg will put all GH actors to sleep. No actor from Africa that I know of can be compared to those ladies from FCG. I mean there is no competition at all whatsoever. I came to a conclusion that our movie industry seriously needs work(miracle) and also has a very long way to go. We need a Kimberly Elise and a Loretta Divine to excel in the future. Until then, we are stuck with bad movies and seriously bad acting from our movie industry. God help us oo hmmm.

    • @nanayaa, It is fans like you that make the industry think twice. I agree with you, at times I bow my head in shame at how Gollywood and Nollywood treats the art of film-making like its a street crime. Like this whole get rich quick schemes. hm, we have a long way to go.

What you have written has gotten me to rethink why we may never get to the level of the west.

The advantage the west has is that they pool talent from the best in the world, whilst in Africa a production company won’t even dare to go find the best outside their own race, culture, alumni association or even the boundaries within or outside of the region they reside.
      for example…..
Loretta Divine is amazing the way she is because she came from the stage(Broadway, original DREAMGIRLS cast). Janet Jackson did not attend any acting school but we know her family is full of performers who started before they could properly walk and is one of the best singers/dancers in our generation, that is how she has improved over the years. Thandie Newton, who is a Brit of Ugandan descent also has no acting school background but she started acting at like age 16 in Australia(FLIRTING with nicole kidman) and even left it to pursue her Oxford education, perhaps she became as good as she is because she innately gets to know the character she is playing. The movie itself stems from an original Broadway stage play-award winning as well- from the late 70’s titled FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO’VE CONSIDERED SUICIDE WHEN THE RAIN AINT ENOUGH written by Ntasky Shange(i’m sure i butchered but stay with me), perhaps the longevity and popularity of the play is why it got picked up by Tyler Perry to be a feature film.

So far notice that all of these actresses in FOR COLORED GIRLS are the best out of different backgrounds, and the movie is the best out of the theater establishment. Look we as Africans can’t even pool from an amazing plethora of famous people in the west who have African roots to do an African production————Iman, Idris Elba(Luther), Sade, Chiwetel Ejifor(the Inside Man, Akosua Busia(Color Purple), Peter Mensah (300)——-that’s why Hollywood has so much strength even to some extent Bollywood is trying it cause use the best of the best with Indian descent from UK, Pakistan, Canada, and so forth.

Nanayaa, Im afraid you are right there is no competition whatsoever. Its like cronyism run a muck in Gollywood which is why it will eventually fall unless it changes and follows the trends of Leila Djansi who is smart enough to see this and uses crews from USA, UK, Ghana, Nigeria. To some extent Shirley Frimpong Manso does the same as well as Emmanuel Apea whose used the best out of South Africa, UK, Ghana(the many regions of it at that).

        • @Kenya, yo, it seems you have been following my comments since the days I had KinshipWambaGhanaba as a avatar. Fine.

Back then I viewed Ghana Film Industry as one that does not need to conform to the standards of the west AND I STILL DO. But given what Nanayaa said, I can’t help but agree with her, we have a long way to go before even our own people see our films as bar none excellent and good enough to boycott/refrain from watching anymore Hollywood or Bollywood films. That’s all I said.

      • @Kin,
and oh i forgot,  i will repeat it again …your Shirley Frimpong Manso and  Leila Djansi’ works are all 2nd year film student’s work! that is the fact! if you know anything about movies you’ll not dare to disagree once you’ve analyze their work.  And then what the fuck do you know about quality production and good narrating storylines. oops nada!
