Following on from our previous ‘Fashion & Lifestyle’ interview special featuring model, Ashanti Ameyaw, it is now the turn of another rising star in the Ghanaian modelling industry to take centre stage- step forward, Sermira Adams.

Sermira is not a new face in the Ghanaian modelling industry; although quite new, this interview highlights the potential that Ghanaian models have to make it to a worldwide stage.

GhanaCelebrities.Com: For those who do not know you, who is Sermira Adams?

Sermira: This lady use see here is an easy going person, fun loving, hardworking, and determined person.

GhanaCelebrities.Com:
When did you first decide that you want to be a model?

Sermira: It was when I came out of the Miss Malaika pageant; I was actually the first to be evicted. So when that happened, I got the opportunity to model for Canon Magazine. That really gave me the confidence and platform to be where I am now.

GhanaCelebrities.Com: What have you been up to lately in terms of both your professional and personal life?

Sermira: With my professional life, it’s all about photo shoots here and there, and travelling in and out. My personal life is about school, and working at the same time.

GhanaCelebrities.Com: Apart from your modelling, are you doing anything else?

Sermira: Yes, I’m schooling as well.

GhanaCelebrities.Com:
Are there any aspects of modelling you find particularly difficult?

Sermira: Not really, unless I am put in a situation that I’m not familiar with.

GhanaCelebrities.Com:
What designers have you worked with so far?

Sermira: I have worked with Kofi Ansah, Bridget Makin, Maya of Benin, Pepita D of Benin, Black Pearl- also from Benin, Kennedy Ansah, Pearl Amoah, and Ms Ivana.

GhanaCelebrities.Com:
Who has been your favourite designer to work with, and why?

Sermira: Kofi Ansah, because he is the best in Ghana and the best on the continent.

GhanaCelebrities.Com: Which designer is your “dream to work with” designer?
Sermira: The late British designer, Alexander McQueen.

GhanaCelebrities.Com: Which fashion week was your favourite to have participated in?

Sermira: So far, it is the ‘La Pearl Noire’- meaning ‘The Black Pearl’- show, in Benin.

GhanaCelebrities.Com: Africa does not really have a lot of well-known International supermodels apart from Sudan’s Alek Wek, and Liya Kebede of Ethiopia. Why do you think this is the case?

Sermira: We have a lot of models here in Ghana, who have the skills and the potential. The problem is that they don’t get the opportunity to go out there; someone like Liya Kebede was discovered by a professional fashion photographer in Ethiopia. So if the models here in Ghana got similar opportunities, I think that we could get somewhere.

GhanaCelebrities.Com: What are some of the problems you face as a young, Black (Ghanaian) model?

Sermira: Well, sometimes you don’t get shows to do, so not only does this mean that you don’t get paid well, but there’s also no exposure.

GhanaCelebrities.Com:
What height, size and physical outlook do you think a person in order to break into the modelling industry?

Sermira: Well, it’s not all about height and size; it’s also about attitude and personality. We have two kinds of modelling in the industry- Runway Model and Photo Model, so whether you’re tall or short, you can fit in either category.

GhanaCelebrities.Com: How do you keep your body structure and appearance this gorgeous?

Sermira: Well, I don’t do anything to my body structure- I just know how to eat and drink at the right time.

GhanaCelebrities.Com: Do you have any event or shows coming up which you think people should watch out?

Sermira: For now no, the year has just began so I’m looking forward to it.

GhanaCelebrities.Com: What advice would you give to upcoming young African models?

Sermira: To my upcoming models, well it’s not that easy, but please work hard, and take every opportunity that comes your way professionally and also try and be yourself, always smile. Thank you.
