I Don’t Need $200,000 Big Brother Cash – Confidence Haugen

One of Ghana’s representatives for the Big Brother Amplified reality show, Confidence Haugen has shrugged off suggestions that her reaction when evicted from the House was a reflection of how desperately she needed the $200,000 at stake

Some commentators have described Confidence’s declaration of “Good, I’m out of this place. I’m done with you guys…” as a face saving gesture after her eviction. Quite uncharacteristic of other evictees, Confidence headed straight for the exits, declining to hug and share a word or two with the other Housemates until perhaps her closest friend, Weza, ran to hug her.

Speaking to Katleho Khabele, co-host of the Citi Drive on Monday June 13, 2011 a day after her eviction, the Aphrodisiac night club owner said she was not bothered by the lost opportunity to win free cash, insisting money was not her motivation for going into the contest. For her, it was for the exposure the show came with.

“I wanted to show that we have fabulous people in Africa just like the Kimora Lee Simonses and Kardashians; that there are hard working fabulous women in Ghana. I don’t need the money. It’s really about the exposure for me as a business woman”.

The 37 year old said she was voted out of the House because she was seen as a threat by the other housemates and not because she was rude, bossy or boring as some viewers have suggested.

“I am a friendly person, however it is easier to be friendly to people who are genuine. Those people in the Big Brother house are not genuine. It is just a game for them. I tried to be real and open with all the members.”

Confidence had been nominated three times since the inception of this year’s Big Brother six weeks ago but although she survived the first two, Africa voted not to save her this time. She thus misses out on the $200,000 prize money.

She added that she was grateful for the love and support shown by her country folk and the rest of Africa, and promised to continue being a role model for hardworking Ghanaian women.

With the vivacious Confidence out of the house, Ghanaian viewers will now concentrate their attention on Ghana’s remaining representative, the smooth-talking Alex, who as Head of House in the Tails section replaced himself with Karen, to hold the fort until the grand finale.
She is expected back into the country on Wednesday evening and address the press on Thursday June 16, 2011.

      Reply
    • @ThickMama, Ghanaians and Africans in general have a higher moral standard, especially when it comes to nudity. Our mentality is not up there with the Americans and Europeans, where nudity is acceptable or where a woman plasters something on her nipples and walks around thinking she’s not naked.

If Confidence wants to be a role-model, then she has to make sure her behavior and way of thinking aligns with the people she wants to be a role-model to. I don’t have a problem with her showing her goodies…she has the body and can flaunt it all she wants. But I wouldn’t want any girls in Ghana thinking that is a model behavior. NOPE.

    • @ThickMama,

I understand what you’re saying. It is true that girls of today will do crazy and indecent  things without Confidence’s help. I expected her to say a lot of things but not wanting to be a “role-model.” By saying that, she’s saying it is okay for girls to showcase their body to the world. She has to understand that she is now a public figure and believe it or not, there are some girls out there looking up to her and that the public will hold her accountable for what she says and does. She should not be a role-model, nor should she say she wants to be one. Kim Kardashian got on the scene through a sextape. I wouldn’t want my daughter “Kim Kardashianing” her way up or “Confidencing” her way up. And Kim K, as far as I know, has never proclaimed herself to be a role-model (I could be wrong, of course).

    • @ThickMama, and I forgot to add, that again, our Ghanaian culture is much much different from that of the Western world. Not everything that is accepted in America should be accepted in Ghana or any part of the world. When we start emulating someone else’s culture to such an extent, we lose ourselves and we lose our own RICH culture. I really do condemn BBA in general and not just Confidence. I know we have to advance with the rest of the world. But we can do that perfectly without compromising our beliefs

  9. ghanaians are such hypocrites i know a woman should respect herself. and anywoman that want to do whatever she likes can do it. In Ghana they will look weird at you when youre kissing with youre lover or holding hands in public, the ghanaian old women feel intimidated when they see a young beautifull woman dressing verry nice and sexy to the extend that they tell them ooh my daughter its to revealing. and what has brought this theire judgemental behaviour nothing, all this konkonsa women that keep judging the socalled bad women happen to be less succesfull than the bad women, cause these socalled holly virgin women have been walked over by men, most of them are not independed succesfull buisnesswomen. what do you gain of being so judgemental.

    • @sarah, this is very unsensible talk coming from a lady. Are u a Ghanain? I don’t think so? This comment is very insulting to the odinary Ghanain woman. All ghanain gals were brought up in a way that teaches the gud values of Africa. u cannot tell me that exposing ur body in public is what you got by leaving in the western world. You have to bow ur head in shame for that comment.

    • @ThickMama, Girl lol I’m trying to do a whole lot about it. But I can’t reach out to everybody in the world. However, the few that I can get to right now, I’m definitely doing that I can. My major in college is solely based on this…hoping to one day help our Ghanaian youth learn the value of their own culture and how uniquely beautiful it is. So you can’t say I’m doing nothing. I’m doing something and that’s why I wish other people, especially Confidence and others who can reach out to the masses more than I can, would set a  better example for our youth that’s all. And no I won’t follow my child everywhere, but I’d hope that what I can teach them at home will be a stepping stone for when they go out there in the world. Not all girls have that kind of parental guidance where their parents are in their lives and doing their best to guide them until they come of age. It is those girls I worry about. And in general, it is girls that are easily swayed that I’m worried about. What Confidence did was POSSIBLY try to use her nakedness to get ahead. And even if I can’t stop all the tribulations that comes my child’s way, I definitely can tell her that her body is not a tool. That showing her goodies to the world won’t necessarily make a guy like her or a girl hate her. That people will judge her based on her actions and if she wants to be respected by others, she will need to respect herself first, love herself first and take pride in herself no matter what culture she identifies with. If I teach my child all that and she chooses a different path, then what can I do? I’d rather she CHOOSES that path (whether good or bad) for herself not be swayed by the likes of Kim K and Confidence. But not every girl is that strong…that’s all I’m saying. I’m allowed to give my two cents and I’m only doing so by what I’ve seen and heard and nothing farther. And telling me not to judge might be a bit hypocritical on your part (no disrespect) because we all do it. It’s simply part of human nature.

As for the money, she really needed it to feed her “keeping up with appearances” life style. Talking about role model i don’t think she knows what she was talking about. A role model does not sleep with her workers (both females and males). Thank god she was evited to save the face of Ghana.
