Ghana Movie Industry’s Talented & Versatile Actors!

blank

The Ghana Movie Industry is doing relatively well. The industry has also come to an appreciable level where its actors and actresses get recognition at prestigious awards on the African continent, Europe and lately in America.

But I strongly believe that, it won’t be too strong a word to say that, the industry lack versatile actors. Truth be told in plain language, versatility is almost non-existent in Ghanaian movies. Also, the industry is small, that every actor who does a movie gets noticed.

Very often Ghanaians [annoyingly true] mistake how good-looking an actor is to mean he is a good or versatile actor, but that’s utterly not true. Let me remind you that being all good-looking has got nothing to do with how great you are when interpreting movie scripts.

Being a great actor like Harrison Ford or Nicholas Cage is one thing and being a handsome bloke like Brad Pitt or Leonardo DiCaprio is also another thing all together. It should be noted that, I’m not in any way saying Harrison and Nicholas are the best of unappealing actors, neither am I saying Brad and Leonado are not good actors.

I get more confused if not worried or worried if not confused whenever a scriptwriter writes a script with a particular actor or actress in mind. This practise is rampant in Africa. In a way, it goes to show that, the said actor is a typecast who specialises in particular roles and also means the person isn’t versatile.

Acting is an art that can be acquired but most actors were born with the talent – those actors are naturally versatile. In football, a versatile player is referred to as a utility player – a person who can operate and play any position in his team. It doesn’t matter the challenge, such a person will fit in perfectly especially when someone is injured or suspended.

Versatility in acting is when an actor is able to play many roles and still be in character. The actor should be playing varied roles from a different genre [romance, comedy, blockbuster, thriller among others] to another.

It is not mostly about playing different characters though, it’s about being able to act different roles and look believable. A great and versatile actor knows how to get into character and switch back when the need arises. This means that, Ghana has only few versatile actors out of the whole lots.

An actors’ mannerism when interpreting any role is very important. Interestingly, offer a role to a Ghanaian actor and you are sure to get the same person in return. Give an angry-looking role to good-looking Kofi Ghana to interpret and you will surely get good-looking Kofi Ghana in your movie.

Such actors are called typecast. They are only there to play one particular role in all their movies. There are no ‘wow factor’ for such actors, since they appear to be the same in all movies.

Are Ghanaian ‘Stars’ Ready To Become Celebrities…

blank

Being a celebrity in any part of the world comes with pockets of advantages and loads of disadvantages. In the West where the concept and practice of ‘Celebrityship’ is well understood, celebrities receive several freebies, huge attention and support for their works.

It is not always a beautiful day in the life of celebrity. Things get messy and harsh with several critics, fans and haters monitoring their every day doings solely to find faults and bash them for these flaws. This is the real life of a true celebrity and the true celebrities have accepted to live with this, finding reasonable ways around the various eagle eyes pointed at them all the time.

With our entertainment industries growing and mounting credibility, certain industry actors have been honoured with ‘celebrity status’. Whether they deserve this status or not is another piece to be considered next time.

The ‘celebrity status’ confirmed on these industry players have been fully accepted and this is evident in the fact that they glorify themselves with it and have even been enjoying the various benefits ‘freebies’ that come with ‘status’.

What is still worrying is that, unlike the West where celebrities face the pros and cons of the status they carry on their shoulders, our celebrities’ desire and only recognise the pros of the game.

Weekly Discussion: What Will Bother & Hurt You More?

blank

I got into a discussion last night with my friends and to my astonishment, it seems some men will be more bothered or be hurt if their wife or girlfriend was caught cheating with a man. But they will be less bothered if she was cheating with a fellow woman.

Contrary to the above, it looks like women do not care whether their man cheated with another woman or a fellow man, they will be equally bothered and hurt no matter the sex of the 3rd party.

I am not sure if this cuts across but that is what I gathered from the lengthy conversation we got into last night…

Is it less of a moral crime if a woman cheats with another woman or if a man cheats with another man compared to if it is done with opposite sex?

Listen To The Audio Interview Below…

[audio:http://www.ghanacelebrities.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Ekow-Smith-Asante-audio.mp3|titles=Ekow Smith Asante audio]

Actor Ekow Smith Asante was one of the few known Ghanaian actors who tried their luck in the auditions for ‘The Spirited Actor’ – The Search For Africa’s Next Hollywood.

Though he didn’t make the final list, he has refused to talk about his experience but after much coaxing, the actor finally opens up. He told GhanaCelebrities.Com that “it was a beautiful experience”.

He continued, “Beautiful in the sense that, I was looking at the organizational part whereby normally we do auditions here and when you get to a certain level in our field, hardly do people [producers/directors] call you [for a movie roles]”.

“Once in a while you get people to want to try you for certain roles to see whether you can convince them that you can play it. But 80 percent just call you and give you the scripts and you do it”.

The auditions for the reality show which was aimed to recruit acting talents in Africa for the fame in Hollywood took place in Accra, where over 700 people were auditioned by Hollywood based acting coach Tracey Moore, film producer and director Samad Davis, Prison Break actor Rockmod Dunbar and comedian Anthony Anderson.

Ekow was auditioned, hopeful to make the final list to add up the list from Nigeria to represent Ghana in New York for the commencement of the biggest reality show in Africa.

Many fans of his were of the opinion that, as an established actor, it was a wrong move by him to have gone to the auditions. But Ekow disagrees, stating his two main reasons for taking part in the auditions, with one being the fact that; it is his dream to get to Hollywood.

Ghana Movie Awards 2011: Which Movies Do You Think Will Make The Final Nomination List + Who Will Win The Best Actor & Actress Award?

Nadia Buari and CEO of Ghana Movie Awards Fred Nuamah
Nadia Buari and CEO of Ghana Movie Awards Fred Nuamah

To be honest with ourselves, aside the few things retarding the advancement of the growing Ghana Movie Industry, it’s an undeniable fact that 2011 [though not yet over] saw many movies being churned out on regular basis.

From where I’m standing and my job as an entertainment journalist offered me the opportunity to see most movies at press/media previews before they are eventually premiered to the general public and subsequently released onto the market for consumption.

I must in all sincerity confess that, I really saw some great movies produced in Ghana this year. I want to play it fair here and not mention a particular movie/s. If I do, it will derail the purpose of this write-up, which is to get the readers to guess their own movies and to be fair to other movies that from my perspective are nothing to write home about.

All too soon, another Ghana Movie Awards will take place on Christmas Day, December 25, 2011 at the Accra International Conference to acknowledge and award personalities in the country’s movie industry who have expelled in the year.

Leakage Of Shirley Frimpong Manso’s Movies: Ghana’s Minister of Information Mr. John Akologo Tia Denies Involvement!

Minister of Information John Akologo Tia

Minister of Information John Akologo Tia, has denied that the Cinematograph Exhibition Board of Control has anything to do with an alleged leakage of movies sent to it for preview and classification.

In a terse response statement signed on his behalf as president of the Cinematograph Board, the minister made reference to an article posted on the internet at GhanaCelebrities.Com which claimed that “someone from the Censorship Board has been leaking Shirley Frimpong Manso’s movies before they come out”.

Prior to the minister’s statement, the news about the supposed leakage had been making the rounds in local showbiz circles. Indeed movie director Shirley Frimpong Manso herself had been on radio to talk about it.

She told Kwasi Aboagye on Peace Fm’s Entertainment Review programme that she was very upset when her office had information that some people had obtained copies of her Adams Apples Chapter 3 before it was released on the market.

Another Pageant Hits Ghana: Miss Ghallywood Beauty Pageant & Talent Hunt!

While many beauty pageants around the world ends with the organisers not fulfilling their side of the bargains or some winners’ triumph being doubted, this does not stop new pageants from popping up day in and out.

The latest beauty pageant to hit the shores of Ghana is ‘Miss Ghallywood Beauty Pageant & Talent Hunt’. “It is an event designed to celebrate Ghanaian movie actors/actresses, appreciating the fans who patronise their movies, discover and make new movie stars and celebrities”, the organisers told GhanaCelebrities.Com.

It is very strange that, though the name ‘Ghallywood’ has not full been accepted as a suitable title for the Ghana Movie Industry, many people still continue to use it.

The ‘Miss Ghallywood Beauty Pageant & Talent Hunt’ is an idea of West Coast Entertainment [Ghana] Limited. The company specialises in Movie and Music Production, Modelling, Photo Studio, Artiste Management among others.

Vodafone 020 Live Concert Flops!: Nice Set Up, Poor Content : Dr Cryme Was The Worst Performer Of The Nite + R2bees Refused To Come On Stage & People Had To Wait 30 Mins Without Light Or Music For Trey Songz

blank

The much publicized second edition of the Vodafone 020 Live Concert could not live up to the level of the biggest party of the year, like the organizers promised patrons of the event during the publicity campaign.

In spite of challenges right from the planning stages, the organizers managed to make it happen inside the Dome at the Accra International Conference Centre, last Tuesday September 20, 2011. If the standard set by Vodafone and Roster 2000, with last year’s maiden event where Nigerian twin singers P-Square headlined, is anything to go by, then comparatively last Saturday’s show was a flop.

The over 4000 capacity auditorium was fully packed with a very wide stage set up with six large projected screens (two left, two right)projecting what was going on to the crowd, and two other projected effects in Vodafone colours as well as pictures and names of artistes performing.

The 020 Live logo was designed in a sizeable round shape decorated with red lights, on the background of the stage. Lights, sound, microphones and the general technical stage set up were professionally done, but the artistes especially the Ghanaian artistes who were supposed to use the stage to entertain the crowd, flopped shamefully with the exception of VIP, and to some extent R2Bees.

As usual, the show which was supposed to start at 7pm, started some minutes to 9pm. Before the main show started, Nii Aryee Tagoe, DJ for the night had a big party with the crowd who danced the night away with both old and new songs. “Muge baya boys” 5Five, kick started the night with their normal appearance, with all three of them in an all white out fits. Apart from dancing “Azonto” to their own popular songs, the Adabraka based Hiplife group had nothing extraordinary to show on stage.

The flat performance by Vodafone Icons winners RnM’s added nothing to the show that could remind the audience of their performance. Amber Rose who only came to showcase her dresses and the beauty of her body was almost non-existent on stage. Her inclusion as an MC for the show seemed absolutely unnecessary as co-MC Eddy Blay single handedly took control of the show.

Readers’ Mail: Let Me Coach Amber Rose & Put Some Sense About Ghana Into Her Baldhead…Who Told Her There Are No Middle Class People In Ghana or Africa?

blank

Hello Chris-Vincent,

I will not waste my time bashing Vodafone Ghana for importing such a cheap person-Amber Rose into Ghana to host their concert. After all, I am not a shareholder and I do not or ever intend to become a Vodafone customer because of reasons like going to give the money they will make from me to folks like Amber Rose. But I think shareholders should thoroughly question whoever hired this ill informed Amber Rose.

What I will not accept as a Ghanaian/African is for uninformed Amber Rose with little or no knowledge about Ghanaians to come and put out false statements as made in the video interview below. At least Vodafone Ghana or whoever hired her could have educated her a bit on facts about Ghana.

Did I hear Amber Rose say there are no middle class people in Ghana? And it is either people are extremely rich or extremely poor? I am a living testimony and s true proof that, she is totally uninformed about Ghanaians.

I am not extremely rich and neither am I extremely poor to be living in gutters or dirt as she puts it. I am a middle class Ghanaian and my family has always been middle class. There are several middle class Ghanaians out there living comfortably and not in dirt.

Vodafone’s 020 Live Rocked But Patrons Were Once Again Taken For Granted

blank

After almost eight hours of music by the various artistes lined up for this year’s ‘020 Live Concert’ organized by Telecom Giant Vodafone, expectant fans were somewhat disappointed – not at the performance but the organisation of the concert.

The Dome of the International Conference Centre was filled to overflowing with lots of people standing outside, hoping they could come in to catch a glimpse of what was happening or maybe ‘not happening’ in the over 3,000 seater capacity Dome.

The hype ahead of the concert drew the numbers but show could not live up to expectation with patrons expressing their frustration every now and then at what could only be described as ‘being taken for granted’.

The likes of D-Cryme, VIP, and 5Five moved the dormant audience a bit when they were called on stage to perform but music lovers who gathered at the Dome are yet to be told what happened to the likes of R2Bees, D’Banj and lead artiste Trey Songs when it was their turn to come and entertain the audience.

Not Again: Vodafone Discriminates Against Ghanaian Artistes

The privileged few (Amber, Trey, Uche and D'banj) enjoying the red carpet as Lazy of VIP tries to eat into their glory
The privileged few (Amber, Trey, Uche and D'banj) enjoying the red carpet as Lazy of VIP tries to eat into their glory

When will this stop? This is utterly disgusting and the earlier something is done about it, the better. It seems these corporate giants are not only taking the ordinary Ghanaian for granted, they are also stretching their ill treatments to the media and the various local artistes in Ghana…

Sometimes, I do not understand some of these media men in Ghana, if event organizers cannot accord you guys with the minimal respect deserved, why bother and help them to promote and sell their shows?

It is time our local artistes start to also add value to themselves and DEMAND that, at least certain fundamental respect and honor be given to their talents…

From the photos above & below, how come Amber Rose is ‘poshly’ sitting on some Red carpet with Trey Songz and D’banj whiles our Ghanaian talented and much respected musicians like V.I.P and co have been pushed to the back as if they are some goddam rotten groundnuts.

If the show was all about the stripper Amber Rose, Trey Songz and D’banj, why then did Vodafone bother to bill the local artistes?I am beginning to get tired of how disrespectful these concert organizers treat our Ghanaian celebrities…

Read below for more!

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Mobile Telecommunication Giant, Vodafone, left a sour taste in the mouth of some journalists when it openly discriminated against Ghanaian artistes billed to perform at the 020 Live Concert alongside International acts Trey Songz and “Kokomaster” D’banj from Nigeria.

Vodafone deliberately treated Ghanaian local stars as though they were nobody and worshiped the foreign artistes like thin gods.

At the pre-event launch on Tuesday September 20, 2011, at the Golden Tulip Hotel ahead of tonight’s big show, Vodafone officials clearly exhibited their disregard for Ghanaian musicians. The sitting arrangement at Golden Tulip’s Upper Terrace said it all, with the three foreign stars -Trey Songz, Dbanj, Amber Rose- and a Vodafone official fully decorated and branded with Vodafone colours. The four sat on confortable red seats, with a 020 backdrop limited to just the four of them and a red carpet just for the four of them.
