LIFESTYLE: Is Weave/Relaxed Hair Beautiful But Fake & Is Afro Hair Natural, But Ugly?

Following on both from the ‘fake article’ and the ‘Dark skin vrs Light skin article’, I have decided to talk about black women’s hair. I have relaxed hair that is a bit past my shoulders, that is what I feel most comfortable with.
I have never done weave because my scalp is quite sensitive and even with “rasta” plaits, my scalp will erupt into itchiness and soreness.
Here in London there is a growing movement of black women who are going back to their natural afro hair from weaves or relaxation, citing the chemicals present in relaxers, and the stress placed upon the scalp by weave and lace fronts as reasons.
Some of them are controversially claiming that women who don’t rock their afros have not pride in their Africanism, and are basing their self esteem on looking like Caucasian women.
Hmmm, while I think this is an extreme point of view, there are studies that have shown that black women express dissatisfaction with themselves from an early age when they play with dolls that have Caucasian type hair.
Clearly we are influenced by what we see, and if the majority of women have weave/relaxed hair, that is what they will think is beautiful.
To some extent, I think the view that long straight hair is far attractive than afro or short hair is also propagated in Ghana schools where girls are disallowed complex hairstyles and have a rule of short “boyish” afro hair so that they can “concentrate on their studies” and not be “distracted” by boys, or beauty.
I can think of only one or two of our female Ghanaian, and indeed West African celebrities who do not wear weave, often the longer, the better.
Time is changing and a lot of young women are finding cuteness, realism and their roots in natural hair. Would you consider going back to natural hair? I am considering it…
For the men, what do you find attractive? Natural hair or the fake weave being paraded around?

  1. Both are beautiful, with afro/natural hair it depends on the type of hair you have and how you take care of it.
I keep my hair natural but because its really light it looks so funny when i style it so i prefer to put on a wig or weave, so NO I will stick with my weave….. 😛

  2. I love when black women wear their natural hair to me it suggests courage and strong self esteemAll those weave does not give black women 100% beauty but i think women who wear them don’t feel comfortable with their REAL God-given features Thereby suggesting that black can’t be beautiful when it is 100%

  3. I think it all Starts from our mindsets. If one day the black celebs in the USA decided to all rock their natural hair I guarantee it will become a trend and no longer seen as ugly. From a young age all we see on Tv are ppl with long striaght hair so sumtimes its not our fault we grow up and think our hair isnt beautiful am 20yrs now and decided to go natural, am loving it.

  4. I have been rocking my fro for a little over two years n im absolutely loving it…my hair is coarse so i tend to keep it very short…most black girls admire it n compliment me for being brave as some them reckon they might have a funny head shape – buh girls who cares! I didnt know what my head would look like so i did get a couple of wigs on stand by before my first crop but i never used them cos my barber styles it to work with my small head shape.
Ill say try it n if yu don like it , keep playing round it till yu get a style that really works for yu…worse case scenario wigs to the rescue.

  5. LOOK, SOME OF US SHOULD BE SHOUTING “HALLELUYA” TO THE ADVENT OF WIG, AM TALKING FROM EXPERIENCE AND THOSE WHO SHARE THE SAME, IMAGINE WEAVE-ON NEVER EXISTED!!!!
EBEIIIII…….OUR LOOKS ALONE COULD HAVE WAKED THE DEAD, MASA, IMAGINE ALL THESE OUR AFRICAN CELEBS USING THIER NATURAL HAIR??? THAT MIGHT BE À CATASTROPHY FOR SOME OF THEM, INFACT SOME WOULDNT HAVE LANDED CERTAIN ROLES BECAUSE OF THIER HAIR……..REMEMBER WE ARE NOT IN THE STONE AGE, IF ONE THINKS KEEPING THE NATURAL HAIR WILL MAKE HER BEAUTIFUL AND COMFORTABLE, GREEN LIGHT!!!! B-U-T! B-U-T!! B-U-T!!!, IF YOU KNOW THAT YOU KNOW, THAT THE ONLY WAY TO SAVE YOUR LOOKS IS TO “HIRE À LAWYER” PLEASE! I BEG YOU IN THE NAME OF GOD AND HIS ARCH-ANGELS NEVER STOP FIXING WEAVE -ON CUS ONE DAY WITHOUT IT MIGHT CUS EPILEPSY TO SOMEONE ESPECIALLY CHILDREN.
COME TO THINK OF IT, WHICH OF OUR GH FEMALE CELEBS HAVE EVER SHOWN HER NATURAL HAIR?????
WHEN YOU VISIT SALONS IN GH, THERE ARE DIFFERENT TERMS GIVEN TO WOMEN WHO LACK NATURAL HAIR, FOR INSTANCE **RITA DOMINIC** IS À TERM GIVEN TO SOMEONE WHO HAS LOST ALL HER FRONTAL HAIR ESPECIALLY AROUND THE FORHEAD. ANOTHER COMMENTS SOME OF THESE HAIR DRESSERS PASS IS…… ” HER HAIR IS SO LIGHT THAT, THE HAIR ITSELF WAVES THE WIND BYE BYE”. SO WHY CONTAIN ALL THESE HUMILATIONS WHEN THERE IS À SOLUTION RIGHT UNDER YOUR NOSE?
I PERSONALLY DNT HAVE THE NATURAL HAIR AND I THANK GOD FOR THE ADVENT OF WEAVE……..VIVRE LA WEAVE-ON!

  6. well its all about what one feels comfortable in. i’ve been natural for the past three years and i really love my looks. i never knew i look like a model until i crop my hair.  everybody around me and even strangers tot i should become a model. i love the fact that natural hair(afro) is becoming a trend now. i hope its here to stay. i must admit that is sometym  difficult keep it soft and moisturize + it might take longer tym to grow which can be frustrating. my hair is half the length of the pic above and i’ve been growing it for two years now but i m not giving up on my dream of growing afro lol. the first year i used to keep it very short (sweat). so its your thing do what u wanna do and just love yourself.

  8. Before I started relaxing my hair, every morning my two brothers and my father had to help me comb my very stubborn afro hair and while they combed my hair I had tears in my eyes. I would really love to go back and rock natural afro hair but it is so hard for me to comb it. Personally I think it has more to do with confidence and mindset.Personally, It would be very hard for me to maintain a natural hair except if I cut it whenever it starts growing.

  9. we are all here talking about being a true african but have we stop to ask ourselves what is the true meaning of being african? i think rocking an afro hair does not make u 100% african but it goes beyond that in the sense that ur clothing should also represent africa in all we are all guilty of not being true African. if you can rock an afro hair than u should be also seen in our african/traditional wear i mean kaba and slit always and everyday by doing that u will be considered as a true african. i rest my case here
