Hip Hop Has A Future In Ghana – Says MUSIGA President, Obour

blank

President of Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Obour has said that some Ghanaian acts who are heavily involved in the Cypher madness in Ghana could have a future in the Hip Hop world.

Speaking to Murtala Muntari on Tv3 Spotlight, he said depending on what they are looking for and what their priorities are, they have a future in the Hip Hop industry which is still growing in Ghana.

When two or more rappers gather to do free-style rap, they can be said to be doing a Cypher. They could be battling each other or perhaps spitting some punch lines.

The term Cypher until recently has been very alien to Ghanaians, even though there are traces of it in tertiary schools in Ghana.

Now the story is much different as the involvement of Ghanaian artistes in the BET Cypher has proliferated in the country.

Some of such Cyphers which have already been released are from Ho Poly, Takoradi Poly, Kumasi, Sunyani Poly, High School Honors 2012 Cypher, SHS, Achimota School Cypher, and Ghana High School Entertainment Awards Cypher.

In 2010, Ghanaian acts such as Sarkodie, D-Black, Kwaku-T, Edem, Baby G, Tinny and Reggie Rockstone featured on the Ghana BET 2010 Hip Hop Awards Cypher.

This year Sarkodie returned to join other international acts on the Cypher.

Gradually the Cypher madness is growing in the country and it is loved by Hip Hop enthusiasts as being a sub culture of the genre.

Using Hip Life as an example, MUSIGA President said when the genre started, people criticised it and said it was going to be a nine day wonder.

He continued that, Hip Life is putting Ghana on the map and that nobody thought that a Hip Life musician would win a BET award.

According to Obour, no one can say Hip Hop doesn’t have a future in Ghana. Rather he calls for the genre to be encouraged and shaped so it doesn’t lose what we are all looking for.

“I’m looking at music that can put Ghana on the map. I’m looking at music that when you hear it somewhere and you are told, this is from Ghana, you can connect to it.”

If Hip Life, Hip Hop, High Life can put Ghana on the map, so be it.
