I don’t know about you, but I just love pet names.  It makes me feel special among many, and that is sweet.  I think it is easier to develop a “pet name” for your significant other when there is respect in addition to the love that you share between each other.

Some people are not comfortable being called “pet names,” but I feel there is nothing wrong with it. Some people are old school, and would rather prefer being called by their names and nothing else. However, I believe having a “pet name” in your relationship makes it easier to identify each other.  Some “pet names” I have heard are honey, boo, sweetie, sweetheart, queen of my heart, sugar, etc.

When I was married, I was never able to call my hubby any other name than his name. It was difficult for me to call him anything else besides his name, and I believe it was all because of how he treated me.  I see myself as a loving person, and I like to pamper my man. However, the story was different with him.

With my new husband now, we barely call each other by name.  In fact, when we call each other by name, then that means there is something seriously wrong, which is rare. I think this is because of the respect and care we have for each other.

I attended a wedding a couple of years ago.  During the exchange of rings, the pastor asked the couple if they had “pet names” for each other.  The couple said “yes” and the pastor asked them to use their “pet names” in addition to their real names to exchange their vows.

To the amusement of the crowd, we heard “meine sonne” and “meine welt.”  I was lost for a moment, and like everyone else I thought the couple misunderstood what the pastor said.  The pastor asked the same question again if they had “pet names, “and again the couple said “yes” and repeated the same words, but this time with confidence.

The pastor then asked the couple to explain their “pet names” to the attendees, so that everyone can understand what they said.   The groom explained the words “meine welt” as my world while “meine sonne” simply means my sunshine.  He said they decided to translate their “pet names” into German to make it unique and special to them.  How sweet!

I thought that was beautiful and unique too as I had not witnessed any couple at a wedding take that route before.

To me personally, “pet names” is unique way to identify your love from the others. It shows the intimacy between the two partners, and it can be a means of continuously spicing up your love life.
