The State of Ghanaian Movies: Why Are We Progressing At A Retrogressive Rate?

Gone are the days when watching Ghanaian movies was a family thing. Nowadays you will be lucky to find a Ghanaian movie to watch with your little ones without being worried about the content or the words being used in the movie.

Growing up, the only thing you had to worry about was the ghost or witches in the movie but nowadays there is a whole lot to worry about. However, I will limit it to two in this write-up.

Although the production qualities have improved significantly, the level of acting has dropped dramatically. Compare the older movies like ‘Diabolo’ and ‘Kofi Nkrabia’ to any of the so called new movies in terms of acting and you will understand what I am talking about.

One of the people I am highly disappointed in is Majid Michel. As an actor, Majid has a huge potential but his constant ‘Tony Montana’ character is a put off for some of us. Using his movie Crime to Christ as an example, you could see that not only was the storyline a huge rip off from Scar Face, his acting and the whole screenplay was also stolen from the movie. He seems to have settled peacefully into this character to the extent that he plays it in almost every movie.

The use of foul language has become an integral part of Ghanaian movies with the latest instalment being ‘Single and Married’. The amount of swear words and foul language used in this movie is beyond belief and again, it is populated by big stars who could not question the script.

Of late it seems like Socrates Sarfo isn’t the only one trying to use sex to sell his movies. The Twi movies are following suit although they have a long way to go to catch up with movies such as ‘4 Play’. Nevertheless, ‘Let Me Suck Your Breast’ is almost on par with it.

The long and short of this piece is, let’s make good movies and stop championing bad acting, foul languages and stealing a whole screenplay and selling it as if it is original.

I love Ghanaian movies but will I still be in love with it if things continue this way? I doubt I will…

  1. I enjoyed reading this article. Not being a hater, but reading the films nominated for this years award, it is an embodiment of this article. Most of the films nominated is a far cry of great movies. As for Majid, the least said the better, he has lost his versatility, that is why Pascaline Edwards mentioned that he is becoming boring now

      • @bond, Thank you. Not promoting or underating anyone, but a friend of mine (Kenyan) visited me and we watched ‘Adams Apples’ together, she was full of praises for the movie. She was shocked when I told her it’s a Ghanaian movie. Why? because somebody had told her Gh movies are porn so she’s never bothered to watch GH movies. just word of mouth put her off. But seeing one for herself was enough to tell her there are good ones out there. The industry needs a massive shake-up, in the area of ‘language’ and a bit more acting.

  4. When it comes to our movie industry we lack in everything except picture quality as you stated. How can a painter do a job of a carpenter? Unfortunately that is what we see in Ghana movie industry today. Everyone is a director. How can you expect a movie to be good when we have unprofessional’s developing the scripts? Of course he or she got nothing to write about except fill the entire script with foul language.  We also have to remember how many of these actors/scriptwriters/directors graduated from a formidable institution of their field. Furthermore what else do we expect from actors/actresses who just began their carriers in acting- directing movies?  My point is until some of these actors or actress realize they need to stick to their acting careers and leave other parts to professionals to do, we will be taking a step backwards.  Shirley Frimpong, Leila Djansi and  a few are just examples on how  film-making work!

  5. Ghana movies are retrogressing because we are giving our movies to nigerians to direct instead of directing ourselves. look at the kind of movies that ghanaian  writers and directors like shirley and leila put out. their movies are full of class, and so clean with little or no mistakes. watch all the crap movies coming out of ghana lately, and you will realized that they are either produced or directed by nigerians.   it is a simple truth. majority of the stories don’t make sense. the movies are so full of mistakes. even a nigerian noticed this trend on nollywoodreinvented .com.  she wondered why all the crap movies coming out of ghana are from nigerians.  we need  to own and control our own movie industry.  i agree with u about the foul languages in ghana movies recently, and i was particularly dissappointed with yvonne nelson. i just hope the finished product of her movie was edited. now that twi movie you mentioned above is not titiled let me suck your breast. if you watched the movie, you will realize that it was meant to send a message to girl that likes to expose their breast all in the name of fashion.  watch the movie first before you judge it.

      • @AKu, i am not blaming nigerians. i am only saying that if you watch movies coming out of ghana lately, they are either from a guy called evans anaele,or kensteve anuka, or emmanuel  emoanobi, and a lot of nigerians. apart from movies from leila and shirley, majority of the movies from our country are from nigerians living in Ghana. if you think i am lying go to  onlinenigeria.com or ghananation.com and watch most of the ghana movies out there and you will know what i am talking about. most of the crap movies coming out of our country are by the nigerians living in ghana. if you think i am lying, these are the movies that came out of ghana in 2012 so far., college girls, married but single, government babes, love and chocolate, mad dog, bedmate, million dollar babe, and whole lot of crap movies. the only good movies i have watched out of ghana  this 2012 is leila’s Ties that Bind, and the remaining chapters of Adams Apples. all the other movies i have watched are from nigerians living in Ghana. i watch a lotta nigerian movies too my sister, and if you think that what you watch on iroko tv  is what movie making is all about , then i sorry to say you know nothing about movie making. movie making is not all about the story. good editing, attention to details all count. and in nigerian and ghanaian movies these qualties are far fetched. we need to own our movie industry that all i am saying. in fact i would prefer if the only movies coming out of ghana are from shirley and leila djansi, at least i know i am getting quality.  i am not blaming nigerians. i am only voicing my opinion based on observation. and my opinion is that we have allowed our movie industry to be infiltrated. any one come in there and shoot crap , and guess what just because it comes out of ur country. ur country’s name is tag to it.  did you even know that the first soft porn movie  Heart of Men was produced by Frank Rajah Arase, a nigerian?  no body did anything to block that movie from coming out.  are we that loose as a country that we let anyone come in and do what ever they want.  we need to step up, own , and build our movie industry because i know we can.

        • @GHBabe, oh i see your point.  this  is Ghana movies industry fault. If there no rules, no regulations everybody can produce/direct anything. For the first soft **** movie  Heart of Men, i was disappointed to see Jackie Appiah in that movie. Do you think if this movie was produced in Nigeria Ini Edo, Genevieve Nnaji, Uche Jumbo, other will accept this script? Never ! Ghanian actors/actresses need to set their standard high, to decline any script that can damage their image. One day i went to one African market in my State, the owner told me he did not sell Ghanian movies anymore. I think something need to be done to correct the damage before it is too late. Despite all the negativity, Nollywood is trying and Nigerians movies are very appreciated in all Africa.

  7. Well, things changing everywhere, not only in Ghanan Movies,,,,,,,,,,eg, Bollywood, back in the days indian movies, no kissing, no showing skin and yet they had the best of the best movies, but now things have changed……….Shahurkh Khan kissed Katrina Kaif in his newly released movie,,jab tak hai jaan. His 20yrs in Bollywood, He’s the king of Romance, cuz SRK makes the Best love stories [ever] without kissing any of his female co stars untill now…………..MY POINT IS, things changed everywhere not only in Ghana movie industry, we will never get the old days back, so we just have to flow with the new days…lol. the endtime is near, maybe.
