MUST READ: Why NPP Lost The 2012 Elections & The Way Forward

blank

Although, there might have been some level of fraud on the part of NDC to win the elections, as you cannot trust people like ****** ****** (name withheld), who are serial fraudsters, yet, there is no point for NPP to waste time on spilt milk by trying to fight the election results, as it will not achieve anything meaningful.

Instead, I suggest that the party has to do self-reassessment and come out with strategies that will enable NPP to become more competitive.

You see NPP continues to suffer from the same problem that the forefathers such as J.B. Danquah suffered, which deprived them the ability to lead the nation and were beaten in all elections by Nkrumah, the person they had brought from overseas to come and helped them.

Nkrumah used all means including deliberate propaganda to win against J. B. Danquah and his colleagues. For more than fifty years or so, NPP is still losing the propaganda war, and that is the main problem of NPP at the moment.

The first pressing issue that NPP has to deal with is how to eradicate the perception that NPP is Ashanti/Akyem (not anymore Akan) party. Whether perceived or real, NDC has succeeded in labelling NPP as an Ashanti/Akyem party and it appears the other tribes, particularly the non-Akans believe this diabolic propaganda.

In fact, the issue has gained so much weight that I even found is startlingly to hear well educated people also arguing along that lines. The argument most used in this regard is that since the forth republic for instance, all presidential candidate of NPP have been Akans and more specifically, Ashantis and Akyems.

Whether NPP likes it or not, this perception is affecting strongly the party’s electoral fortunes to the extent that, drastic measures are required to eradicate the perception. It was against this reason that I believe that NPP should have chosen the late Vice President Aliu Mahama to represent the party in 2008. Instead, as many as additional sixteen people selfishly wanted to lead the party.

In fact, not choosing Mr Aliu Mahama somehow, gave credence to the allegation that NPP is an Akan party, otherwise, I find it extremely hard to believe that despite the clear evidence of the good work that Kuffour did, Ghanaians do not appreciate it and still vote against NPP, despite that corruption is flourishing uncontrollably under the current NDC government and they have virtually achieved no major feats.

Just as Justice Sarpong discussed recently in a similar article on Ghanaweb, the first sacrifice that NPP members who are Akans that have ambition to lead the party have to make is to put the interest of the party ahead and allow people from other tribes to lead the party to the next election. Unless this is done, NPP should forget about fighting the next elections.

In fact, it appears NDC wins even more frequently in some Akan areas such as Central, Western and Bono Ahafo than NPP does. Therefore, NPP has to do all it can to rebrand the party to have a national appeal. NPP can simply not win elections in Ghana just by winning only in two Akan areas (Ashanti and Eastern), it needs more than that.

If NPP disregards this simple truth, it does it at its own peril as the survival or otherwise of the party will rest on this and other reforms made in the party.

This is simple bitter pill that some may have to swallow for the advancement of the party and the country as a whole. When the Republicans lost in the last elections, some attributed it to the fact that the party is not attractive to migrants who are growing in numbers every year and that the Republicans need to attract them, to make it easy for the party to win the presidential elections in the USA.

The other issue is that there is the need for a generational change in the NPP presidential candidature outlook. Whether we like it or not, some people vote mainly on the basis of the personalities of the candidates.

Even in America, I am sure many youth voted for Obama because of his youthfulness compared to his opponents, particularly, in 2008. In Ghana, where majority of the population of the voters are relatively young, choosing a young candidate is very important. I believe that NPP has no choice but to use people not over 60 years as their presidential candidates.

When Kufuor won in 2000, he was in his early 60s and his height and etc all helped him. Also, the country was sick of Rawlings, but even that Kuffour could not win outright in the first round.

Therefore, if one passes his youthfulness, no matter what, the party should not support the person to become the presidential candidate, as such a person might have already his prime age as far as winning elections are concerned.

Lastly, I read that Mr Appiah Ofori is attributing the NPP loss to the selection of Bawumia as the Vice Presidential Candidate; I do not believe that in 2012, that played any significant point. In 2008, that may have been issue as he was relatively new. But in 2012, I would have accepted that fact if NPP lost only in non-Akan areas.

However, by losing at three Akan areas means that the issue goes deeper than Bawumia not attracting votes for NPP. He simply could not have competed for more votes in the North against Mahama, who at this time running as a presidential candidate.

In conclusion, I believe that if NPP takes the right decision the party stands the chance to benefit enormously. Fortunately for NPP, it can rely on the large population of Ashanti region and therefore increasing its fortunes marginally in other areas will boost the party’s chances significantly.

As I have always argued the Ashantis will always vote for NPP, irrespective of where the presidential candidate will come from. So making some personal sacrifices will enable NPP to make some inroads into other areas as well. This is very important as for instance, if NPP had won additional 2 per cent from each of the tribes, it would have won the elections.

NPP should therefore learn a lesson from the woes of CPP that may never become competitive again. It is imperative to make a choice today to avoid the Akan party perception becoming permanently entrenched.

  1. Exactly what i have been saying. If the NPP is to win the next election they must take a Ga, Fanti or Northner if not so they wld lose again.NDC with all their schemes dont have that problem they have had an Ewe,a Fanti and now a Northner as their flagbearer and won so NPP must also follow suite

    • @Frog,u don’t seem to know the history of the NPP. The party policy is to allow only an Akan or a Northerner from Northern Region to be the flag-bearer or running mate.

  2. Good article, but I  think it is NOT the party, it is the FLAG BEARER. Because I was speaking to a friend of mine back home who happens to be an NPP MP, many big shots in the party were not pleased with Akuffo-Addo being the flag bearer. Secondly as you mentioned, other tribes feel so unwelcomed when it comes to NPP, when speaking to a Ga or Ewe, the only thing they say is ‘Oh Asante chemei a party’ (Oh, the Ashanti’s party). What even surprises me more is the percentage the NDC grabbed in the Ashanti Region, Ashantis are marrying different tribes now, unlike before, so NPP should shake their system into shape. Good article

  3. I dont think NPP is an akan party and noo NPP leader has come out to say is for only akans.

Former president kufour won back to back in his regime,he won despite because he know how to control crowd ,there is something in politics if you don’t have you going to lose the election without no doubt and the main thing is human management ,nana addo is lacking HUMAN MANAGEMENT ,former prez kufour knows how to manage human ,you cant win election with by force by saying all die be die this kind of thing that played major role in the election when it comes to peaceful country like Ghana, one thing too that played major role is branding npp as an akan party which is soo wrong when it comes to ghana .

  4. NPP has never come against the people from the three northern regions, let alone any tribe in the country this is surely part if the reason if their downfall but one thing I really want to know is why was there so much focus on the ashani’s to me there was nothing wrong with the flag bearer the only thing that he made a mistake on was by falling from the stage and gambled this election as an easy win for npp he did not look at the negatives things NDC was smart to bribe and manipulate people plus use some of NPP strategies

    • @Dr. Miyagi, falling from stage ahahaha you this guy ,he was just playing dead body lol

Umm has this site suddenly become a political platform? This is what brings division…especially coming from the blogger who is being so BIAS…that’s not cool…nobody is saying free education is not good…to execute such promise in 2013 just seemed unrealistic and desparable strategic to some Ghanaians…free shs is good, but to execute we need the right infrastructures…and plus free shs was focused pn as the only thing npp has for ghana for the next four years…not everybody will agree with one political party or the other…the problem with npp is that they think everybody in ghana feel for them when that is sooo false…if npp had won, I wouldn’t complain because I would’ve believed that Ghanaians voted for them…but npp can’t seem to get that for the other party…so the best way to attack is by calling NDC cheaters…do u think kuffour won the election by default when he was an incumbent in 2004? Please stop being biased because this is disturbing the peace of some Ghanaians…lets all be one Ghanaian ad stop the separation because one belong to another party and not ur favored one…

    • @lilyy, I totally agree with you. Its sad how people easily forget that the same Ghanaians are who voted NPP into power for two terms. And I’m sure it had nothing to do with their tribe. Also let’s caall a spade a spade, letting an Ga/Fanti etc be a presidential canditate just to get votes is equally fraud, especially when the party really is an Ashanti party. If NPP lost, its had nothing to do with their tribe, but more to do with their attitude and sheer arrogance. Go to Kumasi and see how Northerners are being insulted just for voting Mahama. What do they hope to achieve by that? And why can’t NPP members make a point without being so agressive and abusive, if we’re honest here NPP’s campaign was characterized by accusations and counter accusation. Who would have thought that after all that Ghanaians suffered under the PNDC/NDC era they would ever come back into power. But they did, because the average Ghanaian is smarter now, and they vote, personality and policy instead of empty promises. How can you promise Free education to a “developing” country. When even the great America with all its money and structure as a “developed” country can’t provide$ In America pulic school is free, students pay for books, and other resources. But to promise free education including books, uniforms etc. Is the most unrealistic goal. Mahama won because he didn’t promise anything unrealistic, he won because his vision seemed more acheivable. My last point is, its seems NPP feel without them in power Ghana will never make it. All through the fours years of the NDC all they have done is complain about every single move, just because they aren’t in power. You begin to wonder if they NDC did anything right? Can u tell me the Kuffour admistration was perfect and there wasn’t curroption? The world economy is bad, not only in Ghana. But it seems they wish Ghana not to grow to prove that unless they are in power it won’t happen. Why can’t they join in the development of Ghana as they wait for the for years to contest again. It seems we’ve all suddenly forgotten all the curroption under the Kuffour era, even with the “Kuffour” hotel. No doubt Kuffour tried for Ghana, and even though he hd opposition, wasn’t as malicious as the NPP is. Next S years as a word of advice, stick to realistic nd acheivable goals, and stop with all the shouting and agression. Remember the Ghanaian voter is more sophisticated and can see through BS. All politicians are corrupt and full of lies that includes NPP and NDC. You just need to support the one you think is less corrupt. And dear NPP 2000,2004 when u won, you didn’t think the EC was curropt, why suddenly are they, cuz u didn’t win. As for the rigging both parties did, don’t cry cuz ur own didn’t work, and stop the subtle instigation for your followers to create riots

  8. Whatever, the NPP will go to court to seek redress and if the courts say the party n Nana lost, so be it, on the other hand if it becomes evidently clear that there were some foul play the verdict will surely be overturned, Ndc votes from Ashanti region is even more than total votes from upper west region, this is very shameful indeed and they call it democracy.

  9. Congratulations Ghana – now you are going to be led by killers (who killed your mills), rapist , and thieves.

    GHANA IS DOOMED.

In the next  8 yrs (yes 8 or 10 years not 4 because these NDC mtherfckers will change the constitution to suit them and also select a new Electral Commissioner to over see any subsequent elections). Watch and see these useless fools like Tony Aidoo, Kakra Esuamuah or whatever the hell hes call and Asiedu Nketia.) take over the nation. I give you one year the dollar $1 will be equivalent to 5 Ghana cedis. mark it on the wall. If you think the currency is fcked – you have not seen any thing yet.

I dont want to ever hear any Ghanaian complain to say things are hard. You got the opportunity for free education for your kids, but you sold your sold for a laptop , a car or sewing machine – the dumbest thing i ever heard. I feel sorry for your youth and kids who cant afford to go to school in this fast pace world – even the Americans cant catch up with the Asians and Scandinavians when it comes to math and science, so your Omo Ghana is totally fcked with this decision you have made, or should i say decision made for you, cos you let yourself get robbed in broad day light.

They robbed you in 2008 and they robbed you again in 2012 because you were busily guarding a white box not to be snatched when instead you should have been vigilant in all areas – had it not been a woman Adwoa Sofoa – you would not even have known these mtherfckers were rigging all along.

When Rawlings the original God Father of this Thug movement of killers and thieves warned you 2 weeks ago BE VIGILANT, was he gargling on water. He meant exactly what he said, but rather you were guarding some white box of not being snatched and nothing else.

I think that party needs more women,  I was okay with NDC until they killed an innocent man Atta Mills by coniving and killing him slowly. They are evil and dangerous. And if u omo ghana ppl do not watch your beautiful nation will sink by these gigantuan thieves.

How does an old 80 woman goes and wake up at 3am to stand in line on behalf of her great grand children to get free education, and you guys sit there to get robbed in broad day light like this. Ah Ah,.

The one person i am not sorry for is the Rawlings – you created this evil party and now you are a non matherfcking factor to small boys like Okujeto Ablakwa and the likes. So sad.
    .
I HOPE U STAND UP FOR YOUR KIDS AND FUTURE GENERATION AND TAKE THIS TO COURT, JUST LIKE IVORY COAST DID GBABO. SIMPLE AS THAT. NO NEED FOR AGITATION AS I SEE THE NPP YOUTH ARE COS THEY FEEL CHEATED, JUST DO EVERYTHING THE LEGAL WAY AND I PROMISE WITH ALL YOUR EVIDENCE GATHERED OF RIGGED VOTES OF OVER 300,000 IN 16 CONSTITUENCIES YOU WILL WIN AND HOPEFULLY THE LIKES OF MAHAMA , ASIEDU NKETIA, TONY AIDOO AND THE LIKES – WHO ARE THE MASTER MIND BEHIND THIS WILL BE TRIED IN DEHAGUE.

    GOD BLESS GHANA

But just see it for yourself how come both parties had 5 million votes yet still one gets 50.6% and the other party gets 47.80% you do the maths instead o trash talking over here I’m sure you don’t no what the heck your on about

Are you trying to say that, since both of them got over 5 million votes they should both secure 50.00%?? hahahahaha….. let me refresh your memory a bit. In the 2008 Presidential election during the first round Nana Akufo-Addo was leading with 4,159,439 votes representing 49.13% and J.E.A Mills had 4,056,634 votes representing 47.92% so they were both shy of the 50.1% needed to win the election so there was a run off where Atta Mills triumph with 4,521,032 representing 50.23% and Akufo-Addo was lagging behind with just 4,480,446 total votes representing 49.77% the difference was just little bit over 40 thousand votes. In this case if we have to consider your logic then Atta Mills shouldn’t have been President at all because Nana Addo also had over 4 millions votes. Dude, you are a nice guy and everything but let the EC do their job.

  10. What is the essence of branding the NPP party an Akan party, it’s of no use. What my fellow Ghanaian’s need to understand is, voting is not a chance to settle tribal issues.  It is a time to choose a leader someone you believe can make the nation grow and develop. Like I always tell my friends, Ghana is what it is today because of what Kuffuor did. Because of how he run the affairs of the country. His term of office was a land mark for other presidents coming to follow. But obviously it has been messed up. Rawlings had 20 years but he cannot compare his achievements to what Kuffour did in 8 years. People need to vote for leaders because they believe they can give them a job to do, a safe place to lay their head, good education, good healthcare, safe roads, clean water, a healthy environment and so on. What is the essence of using election as means of solving tribal issues. At the end of the day you go back to square one because you had the opportunity to turn things around but you misused it. To me I don’t care who wins as long as you can move the country forward I will vote for you. If Mahama should prove otherwise I don’t mind him winning again. People, enlighten up and know that politics is not a forum to solve tribal issues. At the end of the day Ghana is Ghana because of all the unique cultures and tribes. God bless us all.

    • @Naana,

Rawlings might have blood on his hands but damn, the man started Ghana’s politcal stability as we know it now. And lets not forget during the 90’s ghana had one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. That was down to his government. He might not be perfect, but he’s contributed a lot to what Ghana is today.
Everyone remembers Nkrumah fondly but forget he was the president who introduced the Trade union Act and the Preventative detention Act.
Everyone makes some wrong turns here and there, Kuffour also did a lot for Ghana.

Just accept defeat and congratulate the winning party! and by the way why are we discussing politics here? Clearly Chris you are not PNC or whatever it is that you stated now please stop telling us your views on elections because you are being plain bias after all you are an ashanti and clearly you are speaking like any Ashanti will!! Accept defeat and stop crying on your website!! This tribalism must stop this is nonsense!!! I am shocked that you Chris is spearheading this! Elections are over and the best was chosen so move on and stop trying to cause problems! These useless journalism could lead to war if Ghanaians weren’t peaceful people!!! Your site is fucking bias! DID CHRIS WRITE THE ABOVE ARTICLE? WHAT HAS THE ARTICLE GOT TO DO WITH HIM? DID YOU EVEN READ THE ARTICLE?

IF YOU DID READ THE ARTICLE, HOW COULD YOU HAVE MISSED THE AUTHOR’S NAME BOLDLY WRITTEN UNDER IT?

    • @Keida, i think i agree with you, the guy cant accept that they lost big time, but hey i understand where he is coming from bcs it is not easy to accept defeat, instead of them to look at their short comings and their weaknesses and rectify them they are here blabing and making noise of result rigging, you can cry blood, weep or better still go burn the sea, you still lost and there is nothing you or any npp member can do about it. stop this political bias. bcs all that the NPP did was complacence and thought everybody will buy that fake free shs policy but it didnt work, at the end of the day the best policy worked, so hey guys wake up from your terrible dreams and face reality.

This coming from someone who just said to stop tribalism – I would like to think that you have the intellectual ability to not contradict yourself while making your point – however you’ve contradicted yourself more than once through your comments. why promote the ending of tribalism – and follow up with the insulting of ashanti – your words “If you guys aren’t farming or hitting shoe making boxes then you are either cleaning an old lady’s buttocks in Germany!”

my advice for you is dont suggest something if your not going to follow through with it yourself

      •  @dede, other tribes were insulted and that was just to tell them that no tribe is better than the other dear every tribe has both educated and non educated! Northerners were even called kayayo in the previous articles. that s very bad considering the fact that not all fingers are the same.

Continue like this and nobody will come and comment on your ashanti except you bunch of short charcoal ashanti men! Jheez Chris must stop the tribalism and racism on here from Nadia, Okoro, Nelson and co stop it already! Always tuning them just because they are not Ashantis and praising Jackie Appiah clearlyher surname plays a huge role in your biased self and comments! Jheez nobody is a saint so spare us all the gibberish!!!

IF IT IS ASHANTI WEBSITE, GO AND SET UP ONE FOR YOUR EWE PEOPLE. AND WHO TOLD YOU CHRIS IS AN ASHANTI? I DO NOT KNOW WHERE HE IS FROM BUT HIS MOTHER’S NAME IS NOT ASHANTI AND HIS SURNAME FEBIRI DOES NOT SOUND ASHANTI EITHER.

SO HE MAY NOT EVEN BE ASHANTI. THE MUM’S NAME SOUND MORE LIKE EASTERN REGION (AKWAPIM AREA BECAUSE KWAPONG PEOPLE ARE FROM THERE). SO WHAT WILL YOU SAY IF YOU FIND OUT CHRIS IS NOT ASHANTI? YOU WOULD HAVE INSULTED HIM FOR FREE RIGHT? GET SOME LIFE EWE MAN

STOP YOUR NONSENSE TALK AND GO GET SOME FREE SHS

        • @LILY, Dude I will come back and by the way I do not need free education lol haha free things are usually much expensive than they actually may seem! I will pay any amount for education! That yearn for free goods is that which kills the public sector! Read some economics and enlighten yourself on public goods dear before you tell me I ain’t learned! And this is Chris’s site so he authorizes whatever needs to be posted on here and mind you, my comment did not only reflect on this article! It reflected on previous pieces posted on here!!! You clearly are the one in need of free education but hun I can afford!! Freebies ain’t my style and for your info I ain’t ewe!! If I was I will never deny myself! It is just not right to make Ghanaian politics all about tribes because in the end the losing party inserts all of it’s voters foot in melting plastic.

    • @Keida, OKURASENI Keida Pls if everybody is congratulating the winning teram what is wrong in someone spelling out to the losing team what it did wrong. I am sure I know your tribe from the way you are talking. Why do Ewes feel in ferior to Ashantis? Naturally no one is to fell inferior to anyone at all.

I am neither Ashanti nor Ewe!! I am actually a Ga but I will advice you not to comeback and insult any tribe. Ashantis voted massively for the NDC so how come it wasnt the same in the Volta region too. This shows Ghana is getting diverse from all other regions except the Volta. But even with all that I am noting insulting any one.

      • @zena, You try to portray yourself as a neutral non-bias person but gave yourself away for the tribalist that you are. Let me make it clear that, some Ashanti’s voted against Akufo-Addo because they wanted to pave a way for Alan Kyeremanteng to take up the mantle of the leadership of the NPP. I must also make it clear that, most of the votes the NDC got from the Ashanti region is actually from the northerners and other minority non-akan groups. stop portraying your ignorance!!

        • @Kassim-Banana sweet, how can you confirm what you just wrote ….unless you were there while these minorities were casting their ballots you have no proof that they were northerners or non akans living in that region….unless you played an integral part in the processing of votes dont make useless assumptions to ignite tribal hatred on this forum

We are talking about ashanties and ewes. when your friend was insulting EWEs, where you not behind the person now you are saying ohhh ewes feel higher than ashanties and we should not insult ashanties. I am sorry but i am starting to think that ashanties are so intimidated by EWES. if you guys could care less about us why is our name in your mouth. red arrow me all you want. and chris you are an instigator. i use to like you but you are just causing tribal war on this blog of yours.

  17. eeei 3y3 as3m oo… were u all not alive when the late Atta Mills and the NDC took Kuffour and the NPP to court because they lost? what is wrong with the NPP doing same? especially when they have concrete evidence that the votes were rigged. And it is not even the NDC the NPP is taking to court; it is the EC they r taking the court. this is not about making Afari Djan change his declaration ooo tom! it is about making the pple of Ghana know how unfair our electoral process can be. this suit the NPP is embarking on is not jst btn the NPP and the NDC but btn Ghanaians and the EC bcs all Ghanaians have been cheated. Go to NADAA’s house and u’ll see how high-spirited he is believing that majority of the pple of Ghana accepted him and his policies. I’m still wondering how we gonna mark this party with; empty manifesto, no particular laid down policies, nothing! ask dem what they gonna do and dey say “e dey bee k3k3”! God help us.

    • @Angiebabe, What the NPP must do is to run their campaign on nothing, just give the electorates laptops cars lipsticks clothes 50 gh cedis, you will win the elections one touch, but i also believe in my heart this yr ghanaians really voted for Nana, but afari gyan from stage one to five planned well a calculated method to cheat for ndc, and got it to work his way, and he will be the one who will pay for it.

I think the supporters of NPP should be advice as well as to how they address people from the North in particular. If you will disrespect me, all because I was born in the North(a natural instance).
Don’t you think I will also be stupid to give you my vote ?

    • @Safari, Please dont take this the wrong way but can you or anyone please show me how the NPP [ which we must remember is a whole party – and not one person] disrespected the Northern Region and other regions such as Volta? Can anyone of you please provide me with links to which i can further read about these “supposed” acts of disrespect??? please dont refer to the Ken Agyapong incident – for although i completely disagree with what he said and suggested Akans should do – we have to understand that was a a complex situation stemming from previous acts of tribalism that had not been exposed…Everyone please remember that NPP Party has never labelled or identified themselves as an AKan or Ashanti party- historically this identity was imposed on them by Rawllings during his reign to create ethnic fear and tension…  As i read some of these comments i see clear ethnic hatred – please lets all stop – the respect that Ghana has gained from its African neighbours will seriously diminish if we don’t remain the peaceful MULTI-ETHNIC country that we are. Ghana is not for these politicians – they can pick up and leave when the going gets tough- Ghana is for the people – weather you be from Kumasi or Tamale, Koforidua or sekondi we are all people and we have managed to live amongst eachother for 55 years [ as an official country] please look within yourselves and see if you harbor any hatred, anger, or animosity towards any other tribe  – if so change! think about the youth and the children who will soon come up
