PHOTOS: Actress Celebrates Birthday With ‘Kayayo’ In Malata Market

Actress Celebrates Birthday With ‘Kayayei’ (16)

Head porters known in our local parlance as ‘Kayayei/Kayayo’ in and around the Malata Market in Accra over the weekend had a lot to eat, drink and dance to from the help of one of their own.

The ‘Kayayei’ are involved in manual labour. Their main work is to transport goods from and to markets for a fee. With the kind of insufficient money they make rendering such tiring services, it’s difficult for them to have a decent or sumptuous meals.

They get such opportunities at special events but budding Ghanaian actress Salma Mumin backed by her friends organised a party for them as she celebrated another milestone in her life.

According to the birthday actress who hails from the Northern Region, even though birthdays are special days to celebrate with one’s family, she couldn’t make the long journey to the North to be with her family.

However, since mostly the Kayayei migrated from the Northern parts in the country, she believed, they are her people and represent whatever she believes in as a Northerner.

The actress invaded the Malata Market with rapper Trigmatic and couple of friends to celebrate her big day with the head porters. The Kayayei rested their carrying buckets to dine, wine and danced with the actress and friends.

They helped her to cut her birthday cake.

As she puts smiles on their faces, she extended thank you messages to Hajia Meizongo, Nabil Meizongo, Nana Kwame Asare all of Silverline Films, Trigmatic and Alhaji Doctor Ganimus.

Salma Mumin was born to Mr. Mahama Tando, a businessman and Mrs Asibi Mohammed Tando, a trader in the Upper West Region. She has featured in movies such as Leave My Wife, Seduction, No Apology, Crazy, Hotel Babylon, 3 Some, Passion and Soul and College Girls.

  6. Even though I’m not from Ghana or Nigeria I would love to assist the less priveledge children with back to school supplies. The only problem I have is that my friend and I tried to do that last christmas by shippi ng 10 boxes of stuff and most of the boxes were stolen by the Nigerian shipping agent. Now we are so afraid because we don’t know who to trust to assist us with this endeavour. I hope we can get the help we need in the coming year to make our dream a reality.
