The Great Wall Of Division In The Ghana Movie Industry; Twi Actors Claim Some English Speaking Actors Look Down On Them & Are Over Snobbish

Agya Koo, Juliet Ibrahim & Roselyn Ngissah

There is a great divide in the Ghanaian movie industry and this became more evident prior to the last Ghana Movie Awards when the local dialect actors ‘Kumawood actors’, threatened to boycott the event. Some Twi actors since and after the awards have complained bitterly about how some of their ‘counterparts’, the English speaking actors treat them especially at public events. Some mentioned that the English speaking actors tend to embarrass them when they even get close to them.

The Ghana Movie Industry is one industry running on different dialects. It doesn’t matter to me if an actor belongs to Kumawood or Gollywood, they’re all part of the creative industry. The fact that somebody speaks English in his/her field and another speaks Twi in his/her field does not make one better than the other.

When I read this report in Graphic Showbiz, it was like reading about two different countries competing against each other. The actors who complained about the excessive snobbish behaviour of some English actors were, Kwaku Manu, Akrobeto and Salinco.

Kwaku Manu mentioned that on several occasions, he had tried chatting with some of the English-speaking glamour-type actors at events and the responses he had received were rather chilly, quoting him: “As though those of us who act in Twi are second-rate.”

Citing an example of one of such embarrassing as the 2011 Ghana Movie Awards, he said, he personally approached three English-speaking actors in a conversation and their reaction suggested that they did not recognise him as a colleague actor. The actor also mentioned that on another occasion, Nana Ama McBrown introduced him to some English-speaking actors at an event and he experienced a similar humiliation. “I get the impression that they see themselves as better than us and therefore look down on us” he said.

The Hypocritical Nature Of ‘Christians’ Kills Me, Who Made Christians Judges In This Life?

Lesbians In A Popular Ghanaian Night Club,Accra

The biggest hypocrites in this life are Christians (that is what I think at least). We openly condemn and frown on things we perceive as sin and we show different faces behind closed doors. We are very quick to judge others and point accusing fingers.

I just laugh when people go for Evangelism to draw people to God, and the first thing they tell the ‘sinner’ is “Do you know what you’re doing is a sin?” If we’ve already judged the person before bringing him or her to God, what is the probability that the person will embrace your Christ? You have already condemned the person to hell. Some Christians even have a clique of people they like to associate themselves with…

If you do this or that, it is a sin. You play Sarkodie, it is a sin; you dance Azonto, it is a sin. I have given people lift and they ask me if I don’t have any gospel songs to play, this is not right. You cannot impose your preference on anybody. The God we serve is not a man sitting somewhere. If you want to see God, He lives in us.

Before you call down the Holy Spirit/fire on my poor head, let me first say I am not a homosexual neither am I an advocate. Why are we so quick to condemn homosexuals? Yes, the bible says homosexuality is a sin, but it is neither our place to judge or admonish them. The Pastors most of us look up to and call them Papas and Daddys are being caught red handed practising homosexuality. After preaching against this sin, they hide and do the same thing they preach against. Some people have practiced lesbianism in their school days and they judge as if they don’t even know what lesbians do!

MUST READ: The Ghanaian Woman Who Made Millions Fighting Skin-Bleaching!

Grace Amey-Obeng

Via BBC

Ghana’s Grace Amey-Obeng, one of West Africa’s most successful businesswomen, made her fortune promoting products which emphasised the beauty of the black skin, at a time when many of her competitors were selling dangerous skin-bleaching formulas.

The business empire she started a quarter of a century ago with around $100 (£63) now has an annual turnover of between $8m and $10m.

Her FC Group of Companies – which includes a beauty clinic, a firm that supplies salon equipment and cosmetics, and a college – has eight branches in Ghana and exports to Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Togo, Ivory Coast, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Mrs Amey-Obeng has won dozens of accolades and industry awards for her skincare beauty products and marketing.

But one of the things that make her especially proud is her FC Beauty College which, since its opening in 1999, has trained more than 5,000 young people, mostly women.

“It’s like a family bond. I’m so proud that they have managed to go through the programme,” she told the BBC’s series African Dream.

Equally important to her is her role as a medical aesthetician and she cites seeing a skin condition resolved as something that gives her “joy”.

“I’m so happy that God has given me that talent and that touch to heal people,” she said.

‘Irreparable damage’

Mrs Amey-Obeng studied beauty therapy in the United Kingdom and after graduation, in the 1980s, returned to her native Ghana.

She knew that in her country women take great pride in their appearance and was convinced that there was a niche market she could “tap into”.
