THE BIG QUESTION: As A Christian, Do You Think Drinking Alcohol Is A Sin?

This is a dicey topic. People have different opinions regarding Christians and alcohol. We are all learning so you can add or subtract anywhere you want to. So the question is ‘Is drinking alcohol a sin’?

I think as a Christian, drinking alcohol is NOT a sin. There are many instances in the bible where alcohol was mentioned. The bible is the manual which ‘teaches’ us how to ‘assemble’, and how to ‘function’ as Christians.

The Bible does not necessarily forbid a Christian from drinking wine, beer or any other drink containing alcohol. In some parts of the Scriptures, alcohol is discussed in positive ways. Solomon in Ecclesiastes wrote: “Drink your wine with a merry heart.” Psalm 104: 14-15 states that “God gives wine that makes glad the heart of men.” In the book of Amos 9:14, it discusses drinking wine from your own vineyard as a sign of God’s blessings.

What God commands Christians regarding alcohol is to avoid drunkenness. The bible condemns drunkenness and its effect. Christians are also commanded to not allow their bodies to be ‘mastered’ by anything. Simply, don’t let alcohol control you. Drinking alcohol in excess undeniably leads to addiction.

I used to be a Presbyterian and the communion we took then, contained alcohol. I don’t know how it is now, but in all the ‘charismatic’ churches I have worshiped, they seem to serve as communion. I am not condemning that.

My point is alcohol is not, in and of itself, tainted by sin, it is drunkenness and addiction to alcohol that a Christian must absolutely refrain from.

Finally, alcohol consumed in small quantities is neither harmful nor addictive. In fact, some doctors recommend drinking small amounts of red wine because it is good for the heart.

Consumption of alcohol in small quantities is a matter of Christian freedom. If you know you cannot drink small amount of alcohol as a Christian, it is advisable to look the other way.

BUT DRINKING ALCOHOL IS NOT A SIN. ADDICTION AND DRUNKENNESS IS WHAT THE BIBLE, OUR MANUAL, FORBIDS!

I stand to be corrected on this. You’re free to agree or disagree!

Do you drink alcohol? How often and what is your take on alcohol and your religion?

  2. It is today christians that have made everything ‘basaa’ . I quite remember also visiting one of these new churches and I think they were giving blackcurrant or something. It is drunkenness that is not good. At least someone has been bold enough to mention this. Good write-up!

  3. mr writer, you have said it all. hv been studing the bible for quite some time now and i have not read no where the bible forbids alcohol. infact alcohol is every where, in perfumes, in medicine, in fermented foods n n n, so if alcohol should be a sin then no man will enter paradise. it only talks about misusing it, and u knw as the saying goes too much of everything is bad. The only problem is that alcohol has no good NAME n it mostly dont  look good when a chiristain orders  beer at a party or a family guardering.  Christians represent Christ  so we need to do everyfin possible that we dont let christ look rediculed that is why i have personally chosen not to drink  it at all. I  still have fun drinking sprit  like those who take alcohol infact some who take alcohol end up disgracing themselves in public.

  4. I agree with the article 100%. I’m a staunch Christian, a baptized and confirmed Methodist since childhood, my whole family are Methodists and it never stated anywhere in the Bible that a alcohol is forbidden. Just like the writer said, it is drunkenness that is forbidden and should be avoided. However, some people say that if you dont drink the alcohol at all, it prevents you from taking it in excess to get drunk..so they dont drink it at all….Well on the other part, alcohol in-take is also a personal decision, in my house we drink irish-creams, wines, champagnes etc, they all contain alcohol but i have never seen any of my family member or friend getting drunk just bcz they drank a glass of any of the drinks i mentioned…I dont think drinking alcohol is devilish…

  6. Do people realize that Jewish people have been celebrating Passover with alcoholic wine for ages? This means that Jesus, Paul, Peter, James, Moses, David and every other Jewish person in the Bible drank alcohol. Nevertheless, the Bible tells us not to be filled with wine but rather with the Holy Spirit so it is always wrong to drink in excess or get drunk and if you feel controlling yourself is difficult, then stay off alcohol entirely.
