READERS’ MAIL: The Ignorance Of Ghanaian Celebrities-Ama K Abebrese & Lydia Forson For Slamming One Direction Over Their ‘Poverty’ Tweets

One Direction in Ghana
One Direction in Ghana

UK boy band-One Direction recently visited Ghana under the auspices of Comic Relief, an operating British charity, founded in 1985 by the comedy scriptwriter Richard Curtis and comedian Lenny Henry in response to famine in Ethiopia.

One Direction’s trip to Ghana was in preparation for the coming Red Nose Day to help raise funds and support poor children around the globe (this time Ghana) to bring about positive and lasting change in the lives of these poor and disadvantaged children.

Whiles in Ghana for SOLELY this purpose, ‘One Direction’ spent time with and took photos of several poor children who live in the slums. Their account, photos and videos will be used to raise funds for these children.

After their Comic Relief visit to Ghana, they took to twitter as part of their campaign against poverty and also making known the plight of these disadvantaged children by tweeting emotionally touching photos of the Ghanaian children who live in the slums(those they met).

Among other messages, Niall Horan, a member of the band  tweeted: “Just arrived back from Accra,Ghana! Best life experience ever! This @rednoseday please get involved!”

He again tweeted that: “I’ve seen the slums right in front of me! This is no joke! They really need your help! Poverty is real!,” and added that: “Massive thanks to @rednoseday for taking us to Ghana! It was incredible! Real eye opener! We take so much for granted over here!”

Another member of the group, Harry Styles, tweeted: “Today was the most amazing day I’ve had so far..In my life ever.”

From the many tweets they sent out including the above, it is clear that these guys were only given attention to their main reason for visiting Ghana (comic relief’s Red Nose Day). No where in their tweets did they imply or suggest that the whole of Ghana is poor or the entire country is a slum.

They were simply bringing to the attention of their over 9 million twitter followers of their recent comic relief trip to Ghana, the poverty they say as a result of trip and calling their fans to get involved in helping disadvantaged children, which is the reason why Comic Relief exists.

What is wrong with this? What did they do wrong that our dear ‘ignorant’ celebrities have to slam them…

Ama K Abebrese tweeted them to say: “understand its for charity, but this highly negative image of sub Saharan African countries like Ghana….. that you choose to focus on without balance for the so many positive aspects to your millions of ff”.

REALLY?

Why must they deviate from why they visited Ghana and talk about the other things they saw? They were not in Ghana as tourists, they were there for a purpose and that is what they have to talk about or account for.

Actress Lydia Forson also tweeted: “Dear @onedirection next you visit a country, remember like yours there are beautiful and ugly parts. Don’t base your views on one part”.

Here again,  you can see clearly that like Ama K Abebrese, Lydia Forson was not informed about the reason why One Direction visited Ghana in the first place.

Why should they talk about the beautiful part of Ghana when they came solely for those poor children?

I just do not get the logic and sense in this…

What even upsets me most is that, what are these loud mouth actresses doing to help these poor children?  Yet, they have the audacity to slam the people who dedicated their travel and tweets to these children. When all they dedicate their tweets to everyday are shallow things like photo shoots, fake shoes, fake bags, clothes and phones.

  1. To the reader who wrote the letter: Continue viewing white people who come to your country with self-serving agendas as your ‘saviors’ who will redeem all Ghanaians from poverty and it will take you very far. These white ignoramuses spend 2 seconds, relaxing in plush hotels in Ghana, clap & sing with some poor kids & then send out tweets about how the whole Ghana is ‘impoverished’ and Accra is ‘a dirty village’ and you see nothing wrong with it because you think they’ll give Ghanaians a few pesewas? My God, has it gotten to the point where we are so desperate for left-overs from our ‘white masters’ that we’ll accept any degrading thing they say about our country just so we can get some hand-outs from them? Wake up my people! Ghana will never develop from this aid or charity or whatever that foreigners give us because it comes with strings attached. We need to work hard ourselves and fight corruption. When is One-Direction going to ask their government to promote fair trade & buy Ghana’s cotton, shea-butter, cocoa @ a fair price so that poor farmers can eat? It’s time that we all emancipate ourselves from mental slavery.

    • @Susie, re you just being ignorant too or stupid, where did they say the whole Ghana is impverished and that Accra is a dirty village? Where did they say that? Stop twisting their words to make your nonsense point. Their tweets have been quoted above and all their tweets are still out there online, show me where they said what you are falsely putting on them?

      • @lily, my dear, if you don’t understand the meaning of the words ‘poverty’ and ‘slums’ and can’t interpret Niall’s tweets to know that he was referring to the whole Ghana without exception, then you my dear are very ignorant and stupid and need to go back to elementary school to take English comprehension classes again.

susie i agree with you and lily you must have read very little about the way the foreign media addressed the  1 direction visit, so u r ignorant here. E News described Accra, our capital city, as an impoverished village in Ghana that the boys went to visit

this is the problem people know very little about Africa, its people and its countries all they know is the negative, i believe over the past 50 years its been made perfectly clearthat African countries have many issues that need to be addressed. The world didnt justfind this out yesterday.

By talking about our countries in a terms that can be deemed conclusive to people who know very little about the positive in our countries we are doing more harm than good
what One Direction did in Ghana was great but not transformative
we need the world to know that economies are getting better and that we arebecoming more poltically stable.Things that will encourage foreign investment, investment that could  transform industries and create jobs

    • @Dr. Miyagi, I’m surprised that it’s rather Ghanaians who are defending these white nincompoops. No wonder Africa is where we still are, we’re still ready to sell ourselves out to these white pretenders just as some of our ancestors did. I mean go to Perez Hilton, entertainment outlet & aol and see how the white people themselves are thrashing One-Direction for being unbalanced in their comments & only doing this trip for photo op & PR reasons only & yet we’re always ready to support foreigners over our own people.

We ghanians, africans and blacks should support eachother. we always take white people side. i dont believe in charity. this charity that has been going on in Africa for 200 years, what has it done. its getting old and some africans are still stupid for allowing whites to film all the negativity and they will be begging.  why wont we be taken serious. on tv i saw one docu of a woman in north that has 5 kids and she is begging a white ngo to take her child. what is that. instead of using the money on charity open a lot of factories and businesses to create some job opertunity for christ sake

I mean in the One direction pictures, I didn’t even see them give the poor kids water. They just made them stand up and sing & clap their hands and yet people are happy. Ridiculous

        • @Susie, that’s what really baffles me you know such a hypocrites, now Susie ask your self this question Why didn’t they go to Somalia, or Niger or Ethiopia and choose a peaceful country like ghana cause they knew what would have been waiting for them we ghanaians do not need their help, let them focus on the slums and impoverished areas of london before thinking of going anywhere else, better still they can use that money to cater for their own hunger stricken bodies cause this stupid Cindy attacking the celebs is what pisses me of if she was smart enough she would have known what Ama meant was that Niall could’ve worded his tweet differently and he really should’ve. I do understand where she’s coming from, but the harsh reality of the world is, most people would not donate to causes like that if they knew there was things such as “luxury hotels” and “VIP treatment” occurring there. The boys are simply trying to tug at the heartstrings to get more donations, more sympathy, and in the end, allow those living in poverty a better chance at life.

  4. This person who wrote this mail is one of those people who think they have travelled abroad so they have ‘open mind’. I am sick and tired how these Europeans use Africa as a cover up for duping people of their money..The place he referred to as a slum, I do not see it like that. If they want to fight poverty, there are enough poor people in the U.K. They should clean up their country first! If you do not know what these loud mouth actresses are doing to help..What are you doing yourself? Like they really want to help! Tell me if it’s not for PR! GO AND SLEEP UR A$$ SOMEWHERE!

@chris it takes a smarter person to know this guys came purposely for business and also mock you

  7. All those of you defending one direction are fools. Why should we sit in our country n let somebody from outside come n tell us we live in slums. If you travel to America or Europe you will see the real slams. Why didn’t the go to India/Vietnam where they really need help very badly. Since our actresses are slamming them like the article said its about time they stop investing their money in stupid stuff n help Ghana grow.there have been a lot of Charity trips to Ghana n still we still at the same place no improvement.

  9. Oh My God, reading all these comments make me want to say just this. I have tried several several times to convince ghanaians on facebook (whether home or abroad) about we ourselves donating just 10GHC each to help relief women’s health in Ghana (pregnancy related issues/ maternal mortality rates, cervical cancer treatment, etc.). Not even one person wants to donate the 10GHC. If we won’t do it for ourselves and we do know rightly well how the country is doing, DO NOT SHUT DOWN THE FOREIGNERS WHO WANT TO HELP WITH SOMETHING, AT LEAST. This visit they did was not about their careers; they were just being used by a charity to raise more money for our country. DO WE WANT THE MONEY OR NOT?. ARE YOU OK ENOUGH TO SAY THAT THERE IS NO POVERTY IN GHANA SO WE SHOULD LET THE MONEY GO???????

    • @Sally, JUST LISTEN TO YOURSELF ,SO THEY WANT TO HELP YOU SO. THEY SHOULD INSULT YOUR COUNTRY RIGHT WELL DONE,

      • @27cдгibre(Ф_ф), ok. thanks. I just don’t see any insult as you do. the country these people came from certainly does not look anything like the picture posted up here. If you saw children like this, what would you conclude? that they are rich??? and don’t need anything??. yet we ghanaians, what do we do ourselves to help somebody?? I wish to know what you expected them to say or think.

        • @Sally, it seems like you are not getting it,

Dont you think these boys know from genesis that here in Africa there is slums???

They did said yes it true we’ve seen slums in Accra ,which means they are pretending they have noo idea there is a slum in Ghana by mocking us ,which means you have to know that they came to do business .

This kind of trashing of Africa have been going on for years and they go away with it .

Dont you think there is a polite way of helping them than trashing Ghana.

It surprised me that you guys dont see how some of Ghanaians are helping this children out of the street .but when the white man came you see him as an angel…

Let me tell you they have been showing worser pictures than this for the past decades and what did Africa got from them???

Sit down and wait for the white man to help you !!!

  11. I WAS IN A HURRY SO I DIDN’T BOTHER TO EDIT MY WRITING SORRY READERS
To the writer Cindy Ofori , in the USA, and those stupid ignorant people on this forum criticizing the two noble Ghanaian ladies for voicing out their frustration and the frustration of most Africans. I say stop fooling yourselves and don’t be like the house nigger the Whiteman doesn’t respect. Listen no one is suggesting that they mention if the whole Ghana is impoverish or not and we care less about their ignorance on Africa and Africans. This ignorant and stupidity have gone on for centuries and it is still ongoing, this is a case where white people sees Africa as one country and not a continent. How do you justify this ignorance and stupidity? Listen regardless of how you see yourself in the Whiteman’s eyes you are dirty, uneducated impoverish African or Africans regardless of where you reside in the world or on the African continent.
Listen to yourself speak you are rather the ignorant fool with short sighted comments, you are one of those people who properly come from some village in Ghana and went straight to the USA and therefore sees the West as heaven I don’t blame you. How dare you to call these intelligent ladies ignorant, yet these ladies are doing a wonderful job with their charity organizations, visiting orphanage home and giving out provision for the disadvantage children. Idiot what have you done for even a single child in the village you come from fool. I live and grow up in the UK and USA and have seen how people and white people over here leave their lives on a daily basis and we also know that there are dirty and impoverish areas in these countries and elsewhere. Don’t seat there and write rubbish you do not understand yea. These white people come to Africa and take horrible picture of kids who are defenseless and even in some cases offer them some money to do dirty stuff so they can take photos of them to show their superiors and people in their countries just to make a mockery Africans and you call this charity. Check the definition of a charity, charity is not about taking pictures of defenseless and disadvantage people and children in the name of helping or giving them aid. They do this just to humiliate these vulnerable people and children and Africans as whole. Mind you there are dirty and impoverish slum in every country of world and in the UK and USA where one director comes from where didn’t they take pictures of the impoverish slum children from their country and post it online and on their TV station and watch. They would not dare do that because they do not want foreigners to see the negative part of their country and also they can be sued as well by their government for doing. There are many displaced and homeless people on the cold streets of European and American cities begging for money on a daily basis yet we don’t see all of this on their TV’s and on the internet. However all we see are African women and children in poverty and diseases cover with flies and drinking dirty water. It is high time Africans protect their interest and their own just like every country in the Western and Asian countries do. We are tired of this useless comment and attacks with a whole lot of propaganda and economic interest with white superiority agenda and ideologies.
They do that; put other peoples down just to feel good about themselves. In history those who don’t know should know now white people were barbarians and shall always remain a trump or salvages and to those who worship white people you shall go down with them at the appointed time. The writer and others who do not see anything wrong with these white people’s behavior which has been going for years I feel sorry for you, your children, your family and your next generation. I don’t know what legacy you would leave for your children; you properly do not understand and obviously does not understand the world politics and people’s interest. If indeed these fools want to help any person in Africa and for that reason any person in the world you do not need to take pictures of suffering people and watch in other to give help or assistance to them, you just give if they truly want to help. I don’t think the Europeans and the US public should see photos of poor people to make a decision to help children and people from Africa and elsewhere just like they give charity and food to their country people who are suffering same as people in Africa without picture of the poor people. There are millions of children in their orphanage homes and sick children in Great Oman street as well as street homeless people who need this help too in the Europe and the USA. At least those people in Africa have some where to sleep in warmth and not in the open cold. God bless the two beautiful intelligent African ladies, God bless mama Africa and God bless mama Ghana! Peace

  12. THANK YOU GUYS

GHANAIAN AND AFRICANS NEEDS TO CHANGE THEIR MENTALITY AND THE WAY THEY VIEW THE WORLD AND THE WHITES(EUROPEANS AND USA) THINGS ARE NOT WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE IT IS NOT SIMPLE AS THAT IT DEEPER THAN HOW IT LOOKD. DONT SEAT THERE AND THINK WHITE PEOPLE WANT HELP YOU, IN FACT THEY HATE YOU AND THEY WANT TO HURT BLACK PEOPLE REAL BAD. SO ANY OPPORTUNITY THEYU GET OVER YOU THEY WANT UTILISE THAT. THEY KNOW WHO BLACK AFRICANS ARE FROM HISTORY AND THEY KNOW WHO THEY ARE NOT, SO THEY WILL ALWAYS CAPITALISE ON YOUR DISADVANTAGE. REMEMBER EVERY ACTION THEY TAKE THERE IS AN INTEREST AND SOME HOW SOME WHERE AN AFRICANS HAS TO PAY FOR IT. WHEN THEY GO AFRICA WE RECIEVE THEM WITH GOOD HOSPITALITY IN RESPECT JUST LIKE WE AFRICANS HAVE BEEN TOUGHT FOR TIME IN MEMORIAL TO RESPECT PEOPLE. YET WHAT DID THEY DO THEY ARE LIKE THE DEVIL DESCRIBE IN BIBLE THE FIRST COME IN NAME OF FRIENDSHIPS, CHARITY, TOURIST, EXCHANGE PROGRAMMES AND LIKE THEIR ANCESTORS DID IN NAME OF GOD TO FIRST STEAL (IN DECIET), DESTROY AND FINALLY KILL YOU THE BLACK PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY KNOW WHAT WE AS AFRICANS CAN ACCOMPLISH AND THEY DON’T WANT THAT TO HAPPEND AGAIN LIKE IT HAPPEND IN EGYPT SO THEY WOULD GO TO EVERY LENGTH TO BRING BLACK PEOPLE DOWN AND SO FAR IT HAS BEEN WORKING FOR THEM FOR YEAR. BUT NOW THE NEW AFRICAN IS MORE AWARE OF HIS/HER ENVIRONMENT BETTER AND THE YOUTH ARE TAKEN THEIR OWN DESTINY IN TO THEIR OWN HANDS THEY ARE COMING BACK WITH THEIR DAVILISH ATTITUTES AGAIN LIKE THEIR ANCESTORS THEM OVER THE YEARS. WATCH OUT AFRICA, BE VIGILANT AND THIS TIME WE WILL NOT MAKE THEY MISTAKES OUR ANCESTORS DID. WE KNOW THEM THEY COME IN ALL FORMS IN SHEEP CLOTHS WE WILL NOT ALLOW THOSE SNAKE TO COME AND ALWAYS TAKE AND DONT GIVE NOTHING. IF A WHITEMANT GIVE YOU 20 HE WANTS TAKE 50, GRADUALLY THIS WILL STOP AS MORE AND MORE OF OUR PEOPLE GET ENLIGHEN AND SEE THE TRUTH AND UINDERSTAND THE CAUSES OF THE PROBLEMS ALL OVER THE WORLD. THE WHITEMAN IS AN AGRESSOR CREATURE AND YOU CAN LOOK AROUND YOU AND IN THE WORLD, THERE IS NO WORLD THEY HAVE BEEN THERE HASN’T TROBLES i.e. WARS AND OTHER. NOW THERE ARE A LOOK OF THIS SO CALL YOUNG TOURIST FROM ASIAN, AMERICAN AND EUROPE COMING TO AFRICA SO IN THE PRETENCE OF LEARNING AFRICAN CULTURE AND LANGUAGES AND IN EXCHANGE LEARNING PROGRAMMES WATCH THEM VERY CAREFULLY BECAUSE THIS IS HOW THEIR ANCESTOR USE AND MANAGE TO ENSLAVE AND COLONISE AFRICAN ON THEIR OWN LAND. WATCH THEM MAN WE ARE MOVING FORWARD NOT BACKWARDS. WE NOW HAVE A WEAPON WHICH IS THE INTERNET AND THEY WOULD TAST THEIR OWN MEDICINE GHANAIANS AND AFRICANS BE ENLIGHTEN GO ON THE NET, NOW YOU CAN ALL SEE WHAT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN, I MEAN EUROPE AND AMERICAN LOOK LIKE AND SEE WHAT IS GOING HERE AND RALATE IT TO YOUR LIVES AND YOU REALISE THAT THOSE EUROPEAN COUNTRIES ARE A SHIT WHOLE AND IT IS NOT BETTER THAN ANY COUNTRY IN WORLD AND FOR THAT MATTER AN AFRICAN COUNTRY.

YOU SOME PEOPLE WOULD ASK ME IF EUROPE AND AMERICA IS A SHIT HOLE WHY ARE HERE? I ALWAYS SAY THIS; I CAME TOO TAKE WHAT THEY STOOL FROM. THE VERY EXISTANCE AND SURVIVAL OF EUROPEANS AND AMERICA IS AS RESULTS OF THEIR DEPENDECY OF AFRICANS NATURAL RESOURCES AND WHAT THEY STOLE FROM AFRICA DUING THE COLONIAL DAYS AND SLAVERY WHERE BLACK AFRICANS WERE MADE TO BUILD THE INFRUTRATURE AND ONTHE SUGAR AND COTTON PLANTATION. SO WE MADE THEM WHAT THEY ARE TODAY AND THEY STILL DEPEND ON THE AFRICAN FOR SURVIVAL AT THE DETRIMENT OF THE POOR AFRICANS YOU ON THE TVS. WE SUFFER AS AFRICAN TO MAKE A WHITE PERSON LEAVE YET THEY DO NOT GIVE WHERE THE CREDIT IS DUE. EVERY ON CHILD BORN IN EUROPE AND THE ANMERICAS TAKE AWAY THE PRIVILAGE OF ABOUT 10 AFRICAN CHILDREN. THINK ABOUT THAT!

I will admit we are way better than some of the other African Countries, but remember we r still a DEVELOPING COUNTRY!!! and to the celebrities who have a problem with this statement, i dont see u doing anything about your problems. typical mentality of the black man, we dnt solve our issues, yet we complain about them. then when someone comes to solve it for us, we complain again.
