No Recognition For Ghanaian Stars At AMAA 2013: Did Ama K Abebrese And Adjetey Anang Do So Intentionally?

Over the past few days, a lot has been said about why and how Ghanaian movie stars who attended the just ended 9th edition of the Africa Movie Academy Awards 2013 in Bayelsa State capital Yenagoa in Nigeria were ill-treated.

Yet no one has brought out exactly what happened.

GhanaCelebrities.Com was there and we are bringing you what led to the selection of the MCs from Ghana and how they failed to acknowledge their compatriots at the awards.

We cannot however tell the exact reasons for not been recognised. After reading, you can tell us what you think and who to be blamed.

Last Saturday a very interesting spectacle unfolded as Ghanaian movie stars; Adjetey ‘Pusher’ Anang and Ama K. Abebrese joined Nigerian actress Dakore Egbuson and comedian AY to host the 9th edition of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) in Nigeria.

A lot of questions have been asked and still being asked concerning the grounds upon which the two were picked to host the prestigious award this year. I have heard people say, hosting a live event of such magnitude is completely different to memorising a script for months for a movie shoot.

Prior to the event, their selection to host a major event such as the AMAA came as a surprise to many industry watchers, especially when they are not known to many to have hosted an event before.

It is not clear what might have led to their selection but GhanaCelebrities.Com checks revealed that, the duo from Ghana were picked because they are former AMAA winners.

In 2010 Adjetey Anang won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role with the movie ‘The Perfect Picture’ whiles Ama K. with Sinking Sands won the Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2011.

After the awards with not-so-convincing performance from the two Ghanaian MCs, the Ghanaian delegation which was made up of movie stars, observers and journalists have subjected the two to several criticisms.

Of the two, Ama K. Abebrese received a great chunk of the criticisms for her inability to recognize the Ghanaian celebrities at the event when she spent well enough hours on the stage than Adjetey Anang.

What infuriated the Ghanaians most was the fact that, she acknowledged Nollywood and Hollywood actors at the expense of her compatriots.

Whiles comedian AY was busily on acknowledging-spree recognizing his Nollywood compatriots and ‘killing’ the night like her wife watching home said; Ama rather helped him by acknowledging the likes of veteran Nollywood actor Zack Orji and Hollywood director/actor Mario Van Peebles.

What has annoyed most observers is the fact that, Yvonne Okoro was seated on the front row on the right side of Zack Orji whereas actors Kofi Adjorlolo, Prince David Osei and Eddie Nartey were seated on the second row. Yet none of the above Ghanaians got a mention by Ama K Abebrese…

“If Ama K. couldn’t see us, what happened to Adjetey Anang?” asked actor Kofi Adjorlolo. “They have let Ghana down” he continued.

Her straining voice midway during the awards gave credence to the people who think she wasn’t a good choice for the event. Besides that, she gave room for patrons to call her all sorts of names as her voice keep straining even to the extent of AY making fun of her saying when she was collecting the money [to co-host the event], didn’t she know she will have a strained voice?

Ama K. Abebrese was completely lost and perhaps confused if not tensed.

Her constant repetition of “the next prize goes to …” also angered patrons who appeared tired at a dragging event. What she should have said was “the next award goes to …”

It’s still not known why the two hosts from Ghana didn’t acknowledge their fellow movie stars. On our journey from Bayelsa to Port Harcourt to Lagos to Accra, each of the stars promised to find out personally from the two actors.

They think the two might have an explanation.

What do you also think?

  2. This is why nigeria will always grow fater in the entertainment industry. They support their own and make it look soo attractive so you also support them. Ama K was just caught in that trap. Next time think fast sweety

  4. That is what is wrong with Ghana. We don’t know how to support and hype our people. Two Ghanaians and not a single mention? This is nonsensical.
