Are We In Dire Need Of Film Critics In Ghana? Is It Not Time To Pack Aside The Mixed Race Actors Who Cannot Act To Save Their Lives?

Jackie Appiah Wins Best Actress

Another African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) ceremony has come and gone with our neighbours sweeping away awards in numerous categories.

Ghana. How far? How long?

We came home with one award and not that we usually sweep awards at the AMAA anyway but one is compelled to ask: “with all the movies we are constantly churning out, why are we not breaking grounds?”

Will we start paying attention to detail, skills and not colour or will every Kofi and Ama wake up and become directors overnight?

I am asking the need for cerebral movies. A branch away from mediocre story lines and an all “white” cast. I am sure you know what I use white here to signify. An issue I never stop getting baffled over.

You watch a series or movie in Ghana, shot by Ghanaians and in Ghana and you only see mixed-race people, whether they can act or not, are speaking good English or not, we don’t care. You just have to be mixed or light and speak in a fake accent and voila, you are in as the lead!

What happens eventually? We present these movies for awards and the panel literally pee their pants watching the ‘mess’.

What story are we trying to tell?

POLITRICKS OF THE DAY: Kennedy Agyepong Insults The President…

Ken AgyepongThe loose-tongued New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong is at it again; turning his unrestrained tongue to the President, the entire membership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Police Service.

The NPP MP claims the President of the Republic of Ghana, Mr John Dramani Mahama, has been intimidating him in a court case in which he was alleged to have made tribal comments prior to the 2012 general elections and therefore calls him [President] “bullshit”.

Speaking Saturday April 20, 2013, on Nhyira Fm’s weekly analysis programme dubbed, “Kukurantumi” Mr. Agyapong stated, his continuing appearance in court over his alleged tribal comments prior to the elections, was making life unbearable for him since the case had engaged most part of his day-to-day activities; a situation he attributed to the President’s machinations.

Turning his unbridled tongue to the NDC, the MP said, “These NDC people are fools. What can they do to me? Let them come and cut my head off if they are not fools. Always saying foolish things about people thinking nobody will respond to them. Everyday Kennedy Agyepong, Kennedy Agyepong, Kennedy Agyepong. No amount of money can repair my damaged imaged and so I will also have to insult them.”

He called the members of the Ghana Police Service ‘fools’ who were doing the bidding of the ‘bullshit’ President.

“If a sitting President, who handed power over to himself will come out to say things…… What bullshit! Their brains are not working. These NDC people are fools. What the President went to say in the Volta Region that he was happy that they did not react to what Kennedy Agyepong had said; what kind of bullshit President is that? Then the stupid fool Police too will come and say they are…what kind of bullshit is that?” Mr Agyepong asked rhetorically.
