Another African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) ceremony has come and gone with our neighbours sweeping away awards in numerous categories.
Ghana. How far? How long?
We came home with one award and not that we usually sweep awards at the AMAA anyway but one is compelled to ask: “with all the movies we are constantly churning out, why are we not breaking grounds?”
Will we start paying attention to detail, skills and not colour or will every Kofi and Ama wake up and become directors overnight?
I am asking the need for cerebral movies. A branch away from mediocre story lines and an all “white” cast. I am sure you know what I use white here to signify. An issue I never stop getting baffled over.
You watch a series or movie in Ghana, shot by Ghanaians and in Ghana and you only see mixed-race people, whether they can act or not, are speaking good English or not, we don’t care. You just have to be mixed or light and speak in a fake accent and voila, you are in as the lead!
What happens eventually? We present these movies for awards and the panel literally pee their pants watching the ‘mess’.
What story are we trying to tell?
