SOMEWHERE IN THE WORLD: Edward Snowden Leaves Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport After Being Granted Temporary Refugee Status In Russia

Edward Snowden

For some reason, I did not believe Edward Snowden was still sitting at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport. Whatever it was, he is a free man today—surely not that much of freedom but it is better than being held at an airport.

According to UK Metro;

US National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden has left the Moscow airport transit zone where he has been holed up for the last month and entered Russia itself, his lawyer has said.

The former CIA contractor left Sheremetyevo Airport after being granted temporary asylum lasting one year, Anatoly Kucherena told reporters.

Mr Kucherena said Mr Snowden had been taken by taxi to an undisclosed secure location.

The 30-year-old has been stuck in the airport since June 23 after flying from Hong Kong, where he had travelled after disclosing the existence of classified internet and telephone surveillance programmes run by the NSA.

WikiLeaks, which has been supporting him since he left Hong Kong, said he had been granted refugee status in Russia.

Mr Snowden was left in limbo after being indicted on espionage charges in the US and reportedly having his passport revoked.

He has sought asylum in more than 21 countries, but his applications were complicated by his uncertain immigration status.

His plight coincides with the conviction of WikiLeaks whistleblower Bradley Manning, who faces 136 years in jail despite being cleared of aiding the enemy.
