This was a call made by President John Dramani Mahama during this year’s Eid-ul Fitr Celebrations at the Independence Square.
Hundreds of Muslims on Thursday August 8, 2013 converged at the Independence Square for special prayers on the occasion of Eid-ul Fitr. The prayers was led by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.
President Mahama, who was the special guest on the occasion, reiterated his pledge to accept the ruling of the Supreme Court saying: “The Supreme Court is the highest court of the land…I stood in front of my countrymen and women and swore an oath on this very ground to respect the constitution or else suffer the penalty for it…my attitude to the verdict of the supreme court is therefore not in any doubt… It is my wish that we quickly put this litigation at the Supreme Court behind us and focus again on building a better Ghana for ourselves and our children”
He has called on the various religious bodies to maintain the religious peace and tolerance within the country and also assured Ghanaians that his administration will maintain national unity, peace, harmony and progress in the country.
President Mahama, giving his address, indicated that government is committed to confronting the challenges that comes with organisation of Hajj. According to him, a National Pilgrimage board has been set to handle the affairs of all pilgrimages this year and subsequent years.
He called on all Muslim youth not to allow themselves to be lured into any violence or agitation especially as the election petition at the Supreme Court comes to an end.
“While highlighting government effort in ensuring that we have a successful Hajj this year, I wish to call on intending pilgrims to corporate with the Hajj authorities. I wish to remind our youth again that this is a day of celebration and not a day of madness; sitting on taxis… Let us be cautious in how we celebrate…I wish also to call on our youth especially our Muslim and northern youth not to allow themselves to be influenced by persons to fight their battle for them. Let people fight their own battle” he urged.
