REALITY SHOWS In Ghana: Can’t We Have Any FRESH Concept?

reality-tv

I love watching reality shows. I love cheering in my room with my family. I love picking favorites and betting on them. I love voting –well, not really, except the contestant’s performance is EXTREMELY compelling. I love the hype and everything else that comes with it! Okay, so the point is that- I love reality shows!

Who doesn’t? I am pretty sure I won’t be the only one who feels this way. The thing is however that if you have paid close attention to the strings of shows flooding our local television stations, you would realize that almost always, we have the same things being recycled and aired over and over again.

Don’t even get me started on the number of music shows and beauty pageants we have out there! You would think the only talent we have here in Ghana is music and our gorgeous women. I think not!

Once in a while a fresh idea pops up, but just as quickly as it started, it fades away, never to be spoken of or even remembered. Let’s do a little memory jog, shall we?

Whatever happened to the likes of Dance Fever, the comedy segment of Stars of the Future that brought the huge success of comedian, David Oscar? What happened to The Next Movie Star? I was surprised to learn that it is on its 8th season! Where are all the past winners in our movie industry?

No offence to the stars like Majid Michel and Yvonne Nelson, Agya Koo and Kyeiwaa but it would be refreshing to see new talents come out for a change. I know they are out there! Some even reading this! Why aren’t there more reality shows to unearth those hidden capabilities?

There is so much potential in us as Africans, more specifically Ghanaians than we give ourselves credit for. Majority of the time, all we need is the opportunity to showcase what we have! We need to brainstorm and come out with fresh new ideas; upgrade the existing ones. It will go a very long way as our contribution to putting us out there on the map, not just as Ghanaians, but as Africans!

Like the prolific motivational speaker, Dr. Myles Munroe said: “The richest place in the world is the cemetery…” Not because of the ancient treasures and artifacts we discover but because of all the ground breaking ideas that have died with people.

I for one wouldn’t mind seeing a reality show about a weight loss in Ghana that would keep us living and eating healthy! That would be a first!

  1. Yes I totally agree with you, if u look closely to the Nigerian industry they are not selfish as we the Ghanaians, they always give room for the new and up-coming talent, that make their market and the industry grow..but here my brother, the existing ones are not giving the young one a little chance at all, I sometimes wonder if they don’t want to grow from their current stage to the top? By being a director or a producer. Well a word toe the wise.
