Welcome Reception Carranzer Naa Okailey Shooter (22)

A stately welcome reception jointly put together by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, and Exclusive Events Ghana, has been held in Accra for Naa Okailey Shooter, Ghana’s representative at this year’s Miss World beauty pageant.

The strictly-by-invitation event, held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel on Friday, was to honour and celebrate Miss Shooter’s achievement at the event.

Ghana placed a historic third place position, with Miss Shooter becoming the new Miss World Africa. She also is the first Ghanaian representative to get far in the competition’s 63rd history.

Some of Ghana’s finest corporate heads and dignitaries including the Mayor of Accra, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, Mr Reginald Laryea, former franchise holder, Togbe Afede, and Constance Swaniker of Accents and Arts, among a host of media personalities and known faces, attended the event.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, tasked Miss Shooter to work hard to “uplift the Miss Ghana brand, and its beauty with a purpose agenda.”

“We also trust that you will continue to work with your management here in Ghana to continue to promote tourism and other related industries.”

The honourable Minister used the occasion to reiterate her outfit’s belief that Ghana was ready to host the world event, adding, “I can confidently say that Ghana is ready to host such a prestigious event.

“We boast of a wonderful hospitality industry, rich culture and breath-taking tourist sites.”

“In addition, “she said, “The creative industry is booming. The huge revenue generation capacity for tourism and related sectors cannot be over emphasized.”

MUST READ: BBC Africa’s Komla Dumor Takes Issue With The Frustrations Of The Continent’s Bureaucracy

Komla Dumor

Clearly, Komla Dumor has nailed it rightly…

The sort of bureaucracy in all sectors of Africa is beyond measure, making life extensively difficult for the ordinary people engaged in legitimate businesses.

The irony of this that; in spite of the bureaucracy which makes it a headache for legitimate people and goods to move from one end of Africa to another, the illegal stuff are able to pass through this frontier easily—kind courtesy of  bribery and corruption…

line
Via BBC;

A few years ago I had an interesting conversation with an Ethiopian businessman as I was sitting at a bar in a hotel in Addis Ababa.

He had come over and introduced himself, telling me that he was an exporter of meat products and business was going well.

I asked him where his major markets were; he responded: “Mainly the UAE and Gulf region.”

What about other African countries I enquired.

He gave me a quizzical look as if I was asking him a silly question.

He then explained why it was cheaper to send his products to the Gulf than across the border to another African country.

He gave me a long list of complaints from red tape bureaucracy to transportation costs and other “hidden fees”.

Ironically he claimed that someone in the Gulf was re-exporting his meat with a different label to the African countries that he found too expensive to export to.

His sentiments are backed by numbers: Whereas roughly 60% of Europe’s trade is with other European countries, only 12% of African trade is with other African countries.

I can relate to some of the issues my businessman friend raised.

Frank talk

I have had the pleasure of travelling to several nations across Africa – and each country has given me extraordinary experiences and there are many places that now really feel like home when I touch down: Johannesburg, Maputo, Nairobi or Lagos.

However the process of getting from point A to point B can still be a struggle.

Earlier this year I travelled to Morocco for a big African conference.
