Arranged Marriages in the 21st Century? No Surprise John Mensah’s Marriage Has Broken Down

John Mensah and Wife
John Mensah and Wife

My first reaction to the news of John Mensah’s wife filing for a divorce was “Oyi wa! I said it!” Not to say in the least that I have been praying and waiting for their divorce, but just to confirm my doubts about how the couple met each other and got married.

During Season 1 of Ama K Abebresse’s “A Day in the Life” on Via Sat 1, one particular episode featured John Mensah. A glance through any footballer’s life for a day is really like a dream that is almost impossible. But yes, these footballers have all the glitz and glamour to be called celebrities.

For John Mensah, I remember his mansion at Trassaco, the fleet of cars he owns including the unforgettable Yellow hammer that was parked outside his gate. In that car he gave Ama K Abebresse a ride to his church to meet his pastor.

In a conversation between Ama K Abebresse and John Mensah’s pastor, the man of God revealed to us that, John returned home one time from abroad and he called him up for a meeting.

During the meeting, the pastor told John Mensah that he was ripe for marriage and that he needed to settle down. However, because he knew what was best for John, he had looked around for a wonderful woman that would suit John perfectly. He arranged a meeting between the two, one thing led to another and the two got married.

My first reaction at this point was, “like seriously?”

Arranged marriage in the 21st century? What happened to friendship, dating and courtship? For me, I doubted from that day if there was any real relationship between the two. I found it unbelievable, that John with all his escapades around the world and all over Ghana could not find someone to settle down with and had to resort to a choice made by his pastor, to a woman he knew nothing about.

REVIEW: Twist Of Expectations At The Woman 2.1 Summit

Woman 2.1 Summit in Ghana (1)

I was supposed to be in Kumasi this week for a series of very important meetings with 3 of my former lecturers so I decided to leave for Oseikrom on Friday 18th of October to have enough rest during the weekend before my meetings began on Monday.

This was my plan until I saw an advertisement of the Vodafone Woman 2.1 summit on TV with one of my favorite TV presenters, Anita Erskine as the host. I immediately changed my plans of going to Kumasi this weekend to the next weekend just because I wanted to attend, and also see Anita Erskine in person.

I had heard of this summit during my days on campus but I never really bothered going to any of them because I assumed I already knew what was likely to happen there. As usual, accomplished women telling their struggles in life and how they have managed to make it to where they are now.

This was nothing new to me because anyone who knows me very well would realize that personally on my own, I am always researching into the lives of change makers in the world and felt I knew enough of those stories to keep me moving in life. Not to talk of the countless motivational books I have invested in, and keep investing in.

Those who were aware of the essence of me being in Kumasi this weekend, were baffled when they found out I had postponed my journey. All the same, I began with my preparations towards the summit with an already made up mind!

Two days to day 1 of the Woman 2.1 summit, I went to Circle amidst the heavy traffic from my office in Osu to get a new shoe to wear to the summit. I selected my outfit a day to the first day of the two day summit with the help of my elder sister, ironed and hanged it. My note pad, pencil, and my Samsung tablet were all set to capture notable moments of this day.

Who Killed The Ghana Film Industry? JOT Agyeman Takes Us Through How It Happened!

Shirley Frimpong Manso in London (8)
Shirley Frimpong Manso

The state of the Ghana Film Industry is dire. I have sat back and watched keenly the semblance of a revival taking place in the industry and doff my hat to filmmakers such as Kwaw Ansah, Shirley Frimpong Manso and Leila Djansi for keeping the Film Industry alive.

Other film makers including Socrates Safo and Abdul Salam Mumuni have also made a name for themselves. I dare say however that the Ghana Film Industry is on the brink of death.

In 1948, the Gold Coast Film Unit was set up within the Information Services Department (ISD). Shortly after Independence, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah created the State Film Company which later became the Ghana Film Industry Corporation. Nkrumah built the very first complete Film facility which then included the Information Services Department film Unit building opposite the French Embassy and the whole of the Land currently housing Afrikiko restaurant at Kanda as well as the premises of TV3.

In the early days of filmmaking, stalwarts such as Rev. Chris Hesse, Tom Riberio, R.A. Fenuku, Frank Parks, Sam Aryittey and Ashong Katai gave their all to nurture an industry that was new and vibrant. From the early 1960’s all the way to the mid 1970’s, the Ghana Film Industry welcomed film makers from Nigeria, Togo, Senegal and Kenya. These students of Film came to Ghana to learn from the very best in Africa. How quickly did the tables turn!
