Incest In Ghana: Upsurge In Cases Has Become Worrying

crying baby

Pastor Ebenezer Asare Kumi, Head Pastor of Grace Powerhouse Ministries, was on Wednesday remanded in Police custody by an Accra circuit court for having sex with his 12-year-old daughter. The Pastor is alleged to have defiled his daughter while his wife was on admission to deliver their last child. The victim, for fear of her life kept the ordeal to herself although she had begun limping because her father had threatened her with death if she should tell anyone.

The issue only came to light after the victim’s mother noticed that her daughter could not walk very well and therefore took her to the Ridge Hospital for examination and treatment. Thankfully, her mother took the bold step to report the case to the police.

This is one of many cases of incest which happens in our society where many of these acts go unreported because of threats and fear which makes it impossible for the usually young daughters to report their fathers. It is one of the worst forms of sexual exploitation between parents and children or siblings. Whether this is done out of sexual greed or lack of control of one’s desire, it is very difficult to understand such loathsome behaviour.

While there are general explanations on how fathers can be quite close to their daughters and vice versa, still the idea of turning one’s own daughter into a sexual object is hard to believe. Some even do it with the mentality of ‘tasting before giving out in marriage’ – with others bearing children out of this dastardly act.

Redefining sexual activity and giving it a new meaning in order for someone to sexually please himself or herself at the expense of someone’s vulnerability is bad. If it is a means of getting satisfaction, can satisfaction be justified by bringing suffering and permanent scarring to one’s offspring? A child who is exposed to neglect, violence and abuse will grow up and value the same ideas.

The upsurge of incest cases is worryingly rather too high and it is one area where parents should ensure the safety and security of children when they are away from home. Parents should not take advantage of the close contact that exists between themselves and their children to sexually exploit their own daughters and sons.

Sexual desires directed to our own children are divergence from the norm, culture and our moral values of a healthy society.

  1. Please incest hasn’t started increasing. It’s been there for a long time but just been reported more now. I was molested when i was a child, i’m almost 30. several of my colleagues and our mothers and fathers have similar stories. the problem is that our society prefers to be hypocritical & concern itself with what 2 consenting adults do in their bedroom (homosexuality, what people call ‘fornication’ etc) rather than focusing on children being abused. until we change that attitude, it’ll continue. you have had pastors making noise about gays etc. how many of them have come out to say even one word when their colleagues (eg: jesus one touch, the presby pastor that abused boys, this pastor in the article etc.) molest kids? nuff said
