As usual, the 2013 Ghana Movie Awards nomination list has kick-started the annual controversy, with many industry persons who are missing from the nomination list pointing fingers at the organizers.
Also, some of those who have scored nominations think they belong to certain categories—and not where they’ve been placed, GhanaCelebrities.Com has learned.
Leading the complaints team, film-maker-Leila Djansi has taken to social media platform-Faceebook to question the credibility and sense of direction of the Ghana Movie Awards.
Putting across her rant in relation to her own movie-Northern Affairs, Leila said, she finds it difficult to understand the nomination of Joselyn Dumas in the ‘Best Actress In Supporting Role’ category, when Joselyn Dumas played the lead role in the movie.
Leila Djansi wrote;
“Ghana Movie Awards, what on earth? How can Joselyn Dumas be nominated in supporting actress, when the entire story of A Northern Affair was told from her point of view?”
She continued;
“Guys guys guys, if we are going to do something let us do it right. Please. We can’t continue like this. Get it together and get it right. GMA is a laudable enterprise but it needs to grow in the right direction”.
From Leila Djansi’s social media rant, it is obvious her problem is with the fact that as the Director of the movie, she is the best person to determine who is a lead or supporting if anything at all. And beyond that, the fact that a movie is all about someone places the person in the lead character category.
But when GhanaCelebrities.Com reached out to the organizers of the Ghana Movie Awards, they had an interesting and what seems like the right answer…
According to the organizers ‘like the Oscars and other big awards do, it is not the number of times a person appears in a movie or who the film-maker thinks is the lead that matters. But rather what the sitting committee members of GMA decide’.
Citing section 3 of Rule 6—Rules & Eligibility of the Oscars as a precedent, the organizers said “it is unfortunate that some people have failed to make the necessary enquiry before jumping into talking. Who is a lead or supporting in a movie is solely determined by the selected committee who ballot on this”.
We are told, the Ghana Movie Awards has similar rules like the Oscars in their Rules & Eligibility documents which we’ve already requested to see.
This is what section 3 of Rule 6, Rules & Eligibility of the Oscars states;
A performance by an actor or actress in any role shall be eligible for nomination either for the leading role or supporting role categories. If, however, all the dialogue has been dubbed by another actor, the performance shall not be eligible for award consideration. Singing that is dubbed will not affect the performer’s eligibility unless it constitutes the entire performance. The determination as to whether a role is a leading or supporting role shall be made individually by members of the branch at the time of balloting.
This woman is a BIG HYPOCRITE because she always have something bad to say but every year she is out there taking the award and celebrating it by showing off with it lol.
anyway i think i understand what the organizers are saying, they determine who is what in a movie and that is why they have a board like the oscars not what someone thinks
@James, hypocrite or not we should look out for the growth of the awards….now these people think they are oscars? smh…what time were calls for nomination made? when was the academy formed? when did academy complete nominations? and when will academy ballot for winners? this award is a joke…the only award that nominations in some categories get leaked days before the nominations are announced? yes right! oscars
@yaw cochito, I think this wrong assertion that Ghana Movie Awards is the only award scheme that nominations LEAK must end…I am not sure where some of you are getting that from—probably, have not taken time to find out.
Let me make it clear that, the Oscars, Grammies and all the big awards’ scheme are leaked all the time…

chris, you are taking sides because you do not like Leila Djansi. We have seen the promo for the film and it is obvious that Joselyn Dumas is the lead character. it was her voice on the trailer telling her story. I think that rule from the oscar website is just a guide in case there is a question about whether the person is lead or not. and in this case, it is not so, the girl is obviosly the lead. Leila Djansi is in a position to know better than we do because she works in Hollywood and has movies featuring actors who are oscar nominated or have been in oscar nominated films. Give her a benefit of the doubt. Fred Nuamah is just being sneaky and dodgy.
@Patrick Mensah, Patrick please do not talk like an illiterate, how can you judge something you have not seen yet. You are the type who fall in love with a woman by just seeing her picture. According to you, you have seen only the promo and thinks Laila is right. I here cannot conclude Laila is either right or wrong but like they said, a child always claim her mother is the best cook but his friends will be the best to know because hey also taste their mother’s food before coming to his house. Laila is the producer and director of the movie and will do anything to prove that her movie is the best in Africa as any film producer will do.

Ive heard so many name calling towards her she cant always be right ,but try to be honest. She directed the movie,so apparently knows wat shes saying the whole award is a joke at times. We all know this GMA has been a joke from the beginning till now. Ghana movie industry is a mile different that of Hollywood. So why will someone even think of implementing a rule that is meant for a different industry to theirs?
