A Night of Food & Drinks At the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards + Winners

It was a night full of bliss. Who wouldn’t be happy when he/she is been given a treat? I felt the same way when I attended the MultiChoice and Eutelsat Communications Gala Dinner in celebration of the third edition of the DSTV Eutelsat Star Awards at the Golden Tulip Hotel last night on behalf of GhanaCelebrities.Com.

Where do I even start from?

As soon as I arrived at Golden Tulip, I was served with a tasty fruit drink. With a good – looking waitress smiling and serving me with my first drink (that should tell you I took more than one), who am I to have rejected it?

As for the food,I cannot describe or mention them all. They were arranged in a long queue like some electorates in a queue to cast their votes for their favourite presidential candidate.

Before I fall into a trance, let me talk about the main program first. I may later come back and share the food and drink experience with you. After all, the dinner was organised for a purpose, not for absolutely free consumption of food and drinks.  Actually, the event was used to announce the finalists of the 2013 DSTV Eutelsat Star Competition.

The Award, which is a product of a partnership between Eutelsat and MultiChoice Africa, aims to stimulate interest in science and technology and to inspire innovative thinking among secondary and high school students across the continent.

According to the above mentioned companies, Africa faces a huge shortage of relevant skills in Science and Technology, so there was the need to come up with this competition.

The competition was opened to 14-19 year-old students in 42 countries. The students were invited to write an essay or design a poster depicting how innovative use of satellite technology in the fields of communication, earth observation or navigation could propel Africa into the future.

Top entrants at the national level win prizes such as computers or tablets, and go ahead to compete in the overall awards for the winning and runner up essay and poster prizes.

The winning essay entrant wins a trip with a parent or guardian to Eutelsat in Paris and onwards to witness a live rocket launch. The best poster winner and a parent or guardian also win a trip to Eutelsat, including a visit to a satellite manufacturing facility. The runners-up in the overall awards win a trip for two to visit the MultiChoice Africa broadcast facilities and the South African Space Agency near Johannesburg, South Africa.
