Reggie Rockstone and Obrafour Say Ghana Has No Music Industry But I Disagree…

Reggie Rockstone

Once again, celebrated musicians Reggie Rockstone and Obrafour have joined the league of Ghanaian musicians who don’t speak as people who know much about the industry; but ignorant of what is going on.

First, Ghana has a music industry. Anyone who says Ghana does not have a music industry is simply not observant or alliterate! There is a difference between something not being there and the thing being there but not functioning as expected or to perfection. The 2 logics are not the same.

Pay attention to what Reggie Rockstone and Obrafour revealed about Ghana’s music industry lately: First, ZionFelix, a presenter in Kumasi, reported on what Reggie Rockstone posited (unedited):

“In a submission, Reggie Rockstone asserted it was pathetic the country could not boast of a music industry but rather a music scene after 57 years of independence.

Asked the difference between the two, he explained an industry involved the right structures that made sure artists gained the right revenues and royalties from their sweat so that the government could also make enough money in developing the nation.

He however referred the lack of an industry to what he termed “childism”; an attitude that makes the elderly look down on the youth and never want to listen to them.

“The music scene has been a sort of employment for many Ghanaian youth, but this attitude of childism which prevents a child from making inputs or contributions during adult conversations has left our needs being overlooked. We can’t even express ourselves to the authorities”.

In an exclusive duologue with the editor of GhanaCelebritieis.Com some weeks ago, Obrafour also mentioned that Ghana has no music industry:

So if Reggie Rockstone or Obrafour gets the privilege of being invited to give an address about Ghana’s music industry on any international medium – like CNN or BBC, are these the pictures they would be painting about Ghana’s music industry?

Below are the reasons why Ghana has got a music industry. Ghana has got MUSIGA, which is the musicians union of Ghana – it seeks the welfare of musicians. Ghana has got a collection society called GHAMRO – Ghana Music Rights Organization, which collects royalties’ on behalf of musicians.

Ghana has got VEMAG – which is Veteran Musicians Association of Ghana; seeks the welfare of old musicians. Ghana has AMRO – Association of Music Right Owners; they put pressure on the collection society to collect their royalties.

Ghana has got PROMAG – thus, Professional Musicians Association of Ghana – they seek the integrity and welfare of professional musicians. Ghana has GAPI – Ghana Association of Phonographic Industry; they are made up of executive producers who fight for musicians royalties and against piracy.

Ghana has got a Copyright law – Act 690 2005 and a Regulation, 2010, LI. 1962; which contain laws that protects the IPs – intellectual properties of our creative art industry and the necessary remedies for infringement of an artiste’s IP. Ghana has got a vibrant mass media – print, online, radio, television, etc.

What again do people want to see before they appreciate that we have an industry? If all that I’ve enumerated does not qualify Ghana’s creative art industry as one with a music industry, then those critics should create that industry so we can all see.

If anyone says that the systems are not performing to perfection or to their dead level best, that I agree; but to paint the picture as though there is absolutely nothing to show for it, I disagree! Ghana has got a music industry with its structures but, they can only do better. Until then…MOTWUM!!
