READERS’ MAIL: Why Are So Many Black Women SINGLE?

black woman

I am a black woman in my mid 30’s and until 3 months ago, I was not part of the SINGLE and sometimes desperate clan and I didn’t think I was going to be back into that pool. I thought I had found the man of my dream and kept waiting for the day he was going to ask the all-important relationship question; would you married me.

But after two years of doing all I can to support him, the question never came and a mistake I made which I regret most pushed him to end everything we had and shared.

Now that I am back into the pool of single black women, I have started paying more attention to those around me and have realized that, almost all my black female friends are single with two of them being single mothers.

Over 100 Movies to Your Name as an Actor/Actress and yet Proud of None…? Dilemma of Our Ghanaian Movie Stars…

Last night, I was asked to work on profiles which contain the filmography of our top Ghanaian movie stars who may be attending this year’s Cannes Film Festival–and interestingly, most of these actors/actresses have over 100 movies to their names….

Working on this meant that I went through almost all the over 100 movies top actors like John Dumelo, Majid Michel, Van Vicker, Yvonne Nelson, Nadia Buari, Jackie Appiah, Yvonne Okoro and the others have to their names and at one point, I asked myself; how many of these movies are they REALLY proud of?

Within less than 10 years, some of our actors have over 100 movies to their names, which I must say sounds very impressive—that is if only majority of these movies are not crippling their careers instead of building them.

Having realized the speed and large quantity with which our actors are making these movies, majority of which I have never heard of as an African movie enthusiast, I decided to ask some of these same people (who didn’t know I was working on the above) to give me 10 of their own movies they are REALLY proud of—and shocking, I did not even get up to 6 movies from any of the 3 people who answered.

Unimpressed by the above, I decided to have a look at the number of movies Hollywood stars-Denzel Washington who made his first film in 1974 and Halle Berry who made her first in 1991 have to their names.

From what I gathered, Denzel has less than 50 movies to his name with his latest being The Equalizer. Halle Berry on the other hand has less than 40 movies to her name despite having won an Oscar just like Denzel Washington, a clear indication that the concept of quality being superior to quantity still holds in the world of film-making…
