7 Top Ghanaian Movies That Changed the Game and Made Certain People Stars

The Perfect Picture
The Perfect Picture

The Ghanaian movie industry is older than I am but the contemporary industry we know of today emerged not long ago—in fact, we can perfectly recall how certain movies changed the game and shot certain people into the sky as shinning star.

I’ve decided to put together 7 top Ghanaian movies that redefined the industry, rejuvenated the dying English movie industry and created the needed platform for some of the people we see today as top movie stars…

1. Beyoncé-The President Daughter

The title of the movie may sound like a joke but in 2006, it did exactly what it was supposed to do—fetch the maximum attention and help rejuvenate an industry that most people had abandoned.

This is the movie that made both Nadia Buari and Van Vicker. It also placed Jackie Appiah at a special place in the hearts of Ghanaian movie lovers. Jackie Appiah did not necessarily get a single huge shine but the movie- Beyoncé-The President Daughter gave her enough attention.

The movie lost plot and got silly with The Return of Beyoncé. This movie was directed by Frank Rajah Arase.

2. Princess Tyra

If you decide to watch Princess Tyra today, you will be left with more questions than answers and would probably find countless potholes in the way the story was told. Nevertheless, it was that movie that turned things around in 2007—capturing the attention of the many who had given up on the English speaking movie industry.

Actually, Princess Tyra was the movie that made Yvonne Nelson, pushing her up the ladder as movie star.

Jackie Appiah and Van Vicker got a bit of attention from the movie too but the one star that the movie greatly helped is Yvonne Nelson.

The movie was directed by Frank Rajah Arase and produced by Abdul Salam Mumuni of Venus Films.

3. Crime to Christ

The storyline of the movie was not great but the timing of the release was perfectly. It came to the market a time when people had started paying attention to the English speaking movie industry as a result of the above mentioned movies.

Even though Majid Michel’s ‘Things We Do For Love’ affair placed in the sky, Crime to Christ stamped his status as a star—and similarly, Juliet Ibrahim became an instant movie star out of this movie.

For some reason, Majid Miche’s performance in ‘Divine Love’ which precedes ‘Crime to Christ’ could not give him the needed attention—but that Tony Montana outburst did the trick for him.

4. The Perfect Picture

You cannot talk about the movies that changed the game for the Ghanaian Movie Industry without mentioning  ‘The Picture Picture’. Apart from the fact that it changed the production quality that we were used to, it brought a new level of professionalism to storytelling in Ghana.

Though it was not Shirley Frimpong Manso’s first feature film, it is the movie which planted her in the minds of many Ghanaian movie lovers—as someone to pay special attention to when it comes to film-making.

It wasn’t only a breakthrough movie for Shirley Frimpong Manso, it did a lot of justice to Jackie Appiah’s career and gave Lydia Forson and Naa Ashorkor their own taste of stardom.

The Perfect Picture stood as the greatest Ghanaian movie of 2008 and today, it stands as a Ghanaian classic.

5. Kiss Me if You Can

Following ‘Heart of Men’, ‘Kiss Me If You Can’ also came to haunt us, and just like ‘Heart of Men’, it changed the game for bad—-defining the grounds for those soft porn movies that took over the industry in 2010/2011…

Nevertheless, ‘Kiss Me If You Can’ was the movie that made Martha Ankomah and Prince David Osei. Out of the controversy and ‘tackiness’ of the movie, these two were made.

Kiss Me If You Can was directed by Kobina Rana…

6. Sinking Sands

After the marketing flop of ‘I Sing of a Well’, Leila Djansi needed to show that she was not only loud mouth but had every reason to talk whenever she thinks the industry was under performing.

And to define her excellence, she came out with Sinking Sands which only did not affirm her position has a great film-maker, the movie also made Ama K. Abebrese who had just return from London to Ghana in search for a strong career.

Sinking Sands came out at the time when the industry was being dominated by soft porn movies—and it sort of made the broad statement that, you can still tell a good story and obtain the needed attention without necessarily dwelling on sex.

It gave hope to the many individuals who were slowly losing it with the influx of those tacky movies in 2010.

7. Adams Apples

In 2011, what started as 10 chapter cinema movie series pushed into season 2 because of popular demand— and the huge success opened a floodgate, for TV/web series in Ghana.

Both season 1 and season 2 of Adams Apples held a unique production quality, offering more than just a ‘sexy sassy wahala’ story to viewers. The series which touched on several relationship/family issues had a carefully put together costume, far different, compared to any Ghanaian movie we’ve ever seen.

Adams Apples showed that movie/TV series can work in Ghana if the presentation is right—and if special attention is paid to costume and location, that can be a plus for the production.

Adams Apples was a success but the greatest beneficiary was not the film-maker, rather, it was Joselyn Dumas who became a household name following her appearances in the movie series.

Though Joselyn Dumas had made appearances in ‘The Perfect Picture’, ‘A Sting in a Tale’ and ‘Bed of Roses’, her definition moment was Adams Apples.

It was a real game changer for the industry and for Joselyn Dumas. The movie was directed by Shirley Frimpong Manso…

  2. Keeping the Promise (if i got the title right). featuring Linda Quarshigah, Van Vicker , Vicky Zugah, Omar Sheriff Captan  and Co in my opinion was one of the best films that has ever been produced in Ghana and although Linda Quarshigah played her role well she was never shot into the lime light.
