One thing which has given critics of this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Award a tossup to critique the award scheme is the divulge of board meeting secrets – decisions and judgments.

The first ‘okro-mouth’ conduct came from one VGMA board member – Okraku Mantey, who revealed on radio – Happy 98.9 fm’s ‘Showbiz Xtra’ and television – ETV’s ‘E-Talk’ that the board changed the criteria definition the controversial nomination category ‘New Artiste of the Year.’

Later, VGMA Board Chairman, Nii Aryitey Hammond came public to say that the board did not change the criteria definition of the aid category. Corroborating what Mr. Hammond said was another board member, Fred Kyei Mensah: “we discussed the issue of changing the definition of that category but we did not conclude on changing it. It’s the old definition we used” Uncle Fred said on Rainbow Radio’s ‘GH Entertainment.’

Okraku Mantey again revealed on Happy 98.9 fm’s ‘Showbiz Xtra’ one Saturday that the board shall be honouring 3 musicians for the Lifetime Achievement Award which is usually given to the honourees during the Industry Award and that included in the list, is Obourba J. A. Adofo.

Mr. Mantey furthered revealed that the board decided to honour 3 musicians at a time for that category because, most of our legendary musicians who qualify for that category, are old and are dying, so the board thought it expedient to honour 3 this year.

Elated Obourba J. A. Adofo, who heard the good news, revealed some weeks ago that “I’m highly elated! I long to receive that award as well as perform for the audience on that day; though the award is long overdue.”

Subsequently, J. A. Adofo was interviewed on a number of radio stations – Hitz fm, Channel R, Emak fm, and Nkwa fm; all congratulating him for the good news. The Industry Award came off on Saturday 26th April, 2014 at Alisa Hotel but Obourba J. A. Adofo was not given the Lifetime Achievement Award; neither was he present at the event.

The award rather went to Ghanaian internationally acclaimed highlife musician, Ebo Taylor; only for Public Relations Officer of Charterhouse, Mr George Nii Armah Quaye, to come to Okraku’s defence by saying “really? I never heard that. In fact, I’m hearing for the first time. Please pardon Mark. I’m sure he meant well.”

Latest to join the VGMA ‘okro-mouth’ conduct is Kumasi based radio presenter who was an Academy member for this year’s VGMA, Franky Taylor. “I expected O. J to have won the Best Songwriter of the Year. I voted for O. J. I think now that the award is over; I can now reveal who I voted. I voted for O. J” Franky Taylor said on Rainbow Radio’s GH Entertainment’ on Saturday 3rd May, 2014 without any shred of caution.

How would you take it, if the Electoral Commission of Ghana, after elections and announcing the winner – President, comes out to declare the Presidential candidate he voted for? The judgement is in your hands, pass your decree. Until then…MOTWUM!!
