What Happened to the COUNTLESS Ghanaian Celebrity Foundations?

Yvonne Nelson

Without any office to operate from, a checkable bank account and any structures in place to ensure the running of any sort of agency, several Ghanaian celebrities launched their own name tagged foundations some few years ago—and made noise on various media platforms.

The question I ask today is; what happened to all these Foundations? Are we seeing or have we witnessed any impact?

Apart from actress Yvonne Nelson who came out boldly to say her Glaucoma Foundation has become dormant as a result of the organisation being cash starved, we’ve not heard what has become of the many celebrity Foundations that were launched.

When it comes to Yvonne Nelson, she mentioned that the many pledges she received from various industry personalities were not honoured—and as such, she could not go through with the set activities of the Foundation she once passionately launched.

It is sad that people promised her Foundation all sort of support but failed to honour them. But launching a Foundation on the pockets of others is never the best thing to do. In fact, it is always appropriate to have your own money allocated to your foundation and then go about asking for more from others.

Again, with all the money Yvonne Nelson spends on those expensive bags and travels (let’s accept as she says, they are all real and she pays for her travels), can’t she pump some into her Foundation if she genuinely wants to make an impact through the Foundation?

That is Yvonne Nelson, at least she has given us an idea as to the state of affairs of her Foundation, though the reason does not connect with sanity.

What is the state of the Prince David Osei Foundation, the Becca’s Foundation, the Van Vicker Foundation, the John Dumelo Foundation, the Juliet Ibrahim Foundation, the Nadia Buari Foundation, the Nana Ama McBrown Foundation, the Confidence Haugen Foundation (Project Smile), the Luckie Lawson Take My Hand Foundation, the Majid Michel Foundation (MajiWoc Foundation), Kwabena Kwabena’s Save a Life, the Okyeame Kwame Hepatitis B Foundation—and the several others?

The above are just a few of the established/launched celebrity Foundations we have in Ghana and we have those who have announced that they will also be launching their Foundations too, with the recent person being Vicky Zugah.

Apart from Okyeame Kwame’s Hepatitis B Foundation that occasionally hosts free Hepatitis B screenings and the Juliet Ibrahim Foundation that throws in some news items, the others seem more like bragging rights.

I clearly remember when the act of launching Foundations became a celebrity must-do in Ghana; I stated among other things that; there was no point in these establishments. These celebrities do not even have the operational structures needed to run a Foundation and secondly, they can just donate or rally friends to donate without having come up with these numerous Foundations.

Even if the idea of a Foundation sounds great to them, they have the option of pushing their strengths and donations to some of the well-established and managed Foundations in Ghana, with proper structures and accountability mechanisms in place.

At the time, it seemed to me these celebrities were just looking to make names for themselves by riding on the Foundation wave and probably, squander some donated cash without any form of accountability—and today, I think we will all agree on a single conclusion…

The question remains; what happened to the countless Ghanaian celebrity Foundations and who actually regulates the donations they receive or received?

  1. Fraud alert. They have spent all the money they raised on their lifestyle. These people are no stars, they are not genuine either. Waa look at the nonsense reason Yvonne Nelson gave. So you buy a land to build a house with peoples donation and when they don’t donate, the plan is useless.

Also I remember Becca took so much money from her concert meant for her charity and what happened to the money? chop chop everywhere in Ghana. In politics and also in entertainment. Thieves we call celebrities lol

    • These people go n donate some rags on their birthdays or christmas and they have the audacity to say they have a foundation, and then asks people to donate into this foundation so they can use it for their lifestyle. is there no sandra ankobiah foundation Chris?

      • I have not heard of Sandra Ankobiah foundation it will be a shock if she has some—because it seems every celebrity has one!

Indeed, the question is; are these foundations accountable and do they have a standing reputation of good faith?

    • Very well said my dear, they are using their fans to make money so they can live their dream live. I’ve never trusted Yvonne’s foundation one bit. Am sure if they are allowed to be audited on the funds most of them would end up in Jail for duping. Stupid celebrities.

      • You are absolutely right. But unfortunately, there is no system set up to oversee who is using their foundation funds for the right purpose or who is embezzling the money. So they’ll always get away with it. Very sad!!

  2. Its obvious they spend the money received on lavish gifts.Their purpose of establishing a foundation was to spend the cash. All these illiterates claim their celebrities.Yvonne Nelson claims she has a degree in Human Resource Management so why couldn’t she put her education to use. Juliet Ibrahim tries small small but we know she uses the donations she receives to buy resources for her “China store boutique called Glamour:”. All these people need to be held accountable, this is an act of sin, preying on the less fortunate and the disabled to feed their love for “designer brands” Onyame ehu mooo!!!!. Shame on all these fake-lebities.

      • The problem is, as Ghanaians we don’t like to ask relevant questions. And today,we do not even have electricity in Ghana—reason being that we did not ask the right questions and some people have taken us for granted.

Let him say what he wants, we can all see the state of Ghana now and I will blame people of his kind for that. He should be glad I even took time to write on this subject…But he is upset I am questioning the status quo!

  3. These foundations are their ways of taking money from their fans. Having said that, I believe some of them have genuine intentions especially Okyeame K.

  4. Like I have always said, these celebrities are not what they claim to be. They are broke and they go about lie they have some bank full of money. See the number of foundations and link it to the lifestyle of the founders. Does it not connect?

These people are taking us a real BIG fools. Yvonne made a whole noise about her foundation and even released a music video to go with it. Now she says what? Did she not think about her source of funding?

  5. Who can blame them… They have to keep up but I’m more worried as to why they chose such a philanthropic forum to do that ….I bet they can still do their little bit for society without having to have a foundation.

    • Say it again, why do you need a foundation to be able to do a philanthropic work? I think they are want to show off or say, me too I have a foundation plus use it go get people’s money and then use the money to by LV bags

  6. They are all fake, is it not a shame to dupe innocent ones and live your lavishing dreams? Seriously someone needs to look into this. The only person who’s trying and fulfilling his promise is John dumelo. He has donated and built school buildings in the villages. That guy is genuine when it comes to giving despise all his flaws. I do respect him for his good works. Yvonne Nelson is so fakeeeeeeeeeee please no one should ever contribute to her foundation. We will see her in expensive wear after that that funds is collected. Shameless local celebrities.
