The New Money Syndrome-Are You Suffering From It? | Most of Our Ghanaian Celebrities Are…

Yvonne Nelson1

We are in the social media age where the adage ‘If you’ve got it flaunt it’ seems to have found a strong prominence in our generation. Go through your friend’s facebook, twitter or instagram pages and you see how much flaunting goes around. A lot of people who do this have a disease I would like to call the ‘New Money Syndrome’.

I was first introduced to this term by a friend of mine. She argues that people who like to flaunt their material possession are suffering from the New Money Syndrome. She explains that the new money syndrome is when someone who has not had a rosy upbringing suddenly finds themselves wealthy.

It might be from a really good paying job, or some fraudulent activity (yahoo yahoo), or having a very rich partner. These were people who could not afford the bare necessities of life, and are suddenly enjoying luxury. They like to tell the whole world what they have because it is all new to them.

They announce any trip they make, often posting pictures of first class seats in a plane, they let people know how much they bought a certain shoe for, going as far as posting pictures of receipts online. Some have even gone as far as posting pictures of themselves sitting on toilet seats in a hotel, just because it is a 5 star hotel.

When you compare their behaviour to the old money people, there is a vast difference. The old money people are those who have been introduced to the best luxuries of life right from an early age. Most of them do not find the need to flaunt anything because it is normal to them.

Right from an early age, they have been going on trips to the most exotic locations on earth. Why then would they feel the need to brag about a routine family trip to the USA?. These people are usually very down to earth, and at times you would never guess how wealthy they are until you get close to them. The new money people on the other hand can be very rude and loud just because they feel they have arrived.

You can take a look at some of our celebrities just to confirm some of the points raised. I am not going to mention any names but you should just analyse the current behaviour and background of some of them. A lot of them have the New Money Syndrome.

I am in by no means saying that everyone who was not born rich but has worked hard to get to a comfortable stage in life is suffering from the new money syndrome. There are even some born in old money who display attributes of new money syndrome.

All I am saying is that if you constantly feel the need to display your material possessions just to validate you existence, then you are mostly likely suffering from this disease.

  1. Why complain now GC? You guys are the ones always complimenting home girl J.Appiah for travelling first class(biz class)while someone like prince Williams travels with a commercial flight. Does Oprah or Bill Gate flaunt their wealth on any social network? Noise makers!
