An enthralling 120 minutes of action ended in a 2-1 win for the Europeans in one of the better games so far of this year’s world cup.

Extra time goals from Andre Schurrle and Mezut Ozil gave Germany a comfortable 2-1 win over the North African side. Algeria’s goal, scored by Abdelmoumene Djabou in the final minute of extra time, was a tad too late and served as nothing more than a consolation as the final African side was knocked out from the world cup.

Algeria had an axe to grind against the Germans who got them eliminated in 1982, and the second Euro-African clash of the day kicked off at a blistering pace which was maintained throughout the initial 90 minutes of the tie.

Despite being heavy favourites it was Die Mannschaft who found themselves on the back-foot early in the game as Algeria took the game onto their more illustrious opponents.

Manuel Neuer was called upon twice to clear behind his defence who were playing an uncomfortably high line, the first ball found Slimani down the left flank, and he marginally got around Neuer but the keeper got back well to block the shot.

The second happened in the 29th minute, as Neuer again had to rush off his line to get the ball of the feet of Feghouli, who had dispossessed Per Mertesacker for the chance.

Valencia midfielder Feghouli had missed an earlier chance, when a beautiful run into the box saw him go for goal instead of his two free teammates in the middle, and his shot was horribly sent wide.

Algeria had Manuel Neuer beat in the 16th minute, but Slimani’s header was correctly ruled out for offside.

The game was remarkably open, and Germany also fashioned some chances of their own, though they found Mbolhi an impenetrable wall.

Bastian Schweinsteigger had a shot punched out for a corner in the 14th minute. Ozil tried to chip the keeper when he could have crossed, then a long range Toni Kroos effort was saved untidily by Mbholi, but he saved Gotze’s rebound as well to keep the scores level.

Algeria was not to be left behind, with Feghouli, Ghoulam, and Slimani coming close on numerous occasions but no one was able to break the deadlock, until the referee called for the halftime whistle.

The second half began with an early change for Germany, Andre Schurrle on for Mario Gotze. The Chelsea forward had barely been on for a minute when he had a shot deflected for a corner.

Continuing from the frenetic pace of the first half, the second saw many more chances, although neither side could take the lead; with Neuer and Mbolhi in either goal carrying out fantastic saves.

In the 48th minute, Toni Kroos beat two men and sent in a cross, but Mustafi’s header was straight at Mbolhi. In the 54th, it was the turn of skipper Lahm to try a long range effort, which was palmed aside for a corner.

Algeria continued to favour long balls over the top, but once again as in the first half, Neuer rushed off his line to thump the ball to safety on two occasions.

Their best chance of the half fell to Feghouli, whose powerful shot narrowly missed Neuer;s goal.

As the game wound down Germany pressed hard for a winner but Mbolhi remained firm in his post. Muller shot narrowly wide from a great position in the 82nd, whilst Schweinsteigger’s free header was straight at the Algerian shot stopper.

Philipp Lahm almost got the winner in stoppages, but his shot was deflected wide, sending the game into extra time.

It did not take long for Germany to take the lead though, Andre Schurrle turning in Thomas Muller’s cross with an ingenious back-heel just one minute into extra time.

With exhaustion setting in the pace slowed considerably and Algeria found it more difficult to carve a way back into the game. Feghouli’s free kick in the 104th minutes was a little too high for Sulejman, being scooped up by Manuel Neuer.

Chances fell to both sides after that but the game was calmer from then on until Ozil gave Germany a second goal cushion in the 119th minute.

Schurrle and Ozil exchanged passes, before Schurrle’s weak shot was cleared off the line; Ozil then smashed in the rebound past the goalkeeper and two men on the goal line.

Algeria almost immediately pegged a goal back, Djabou connecting to a fantastic cross from the right. It was too little too late though, as Die Mannschaft picked the win to set up a tie with France in the quarter finals.
