GFA Renders Apology to Ghanaians | It’s Reform We Need, Not Apologies

The Black Stars returned to Ghana one of the worst teams at this year’s world cup, both on the pitch and off it. Ghanaians everywhere witnessed the sorry state of affairs within the team, leading to not only our elimination but humiliation at the hands of the world media.

Now we are to believe all is well, and forget everything that happened because the Ghana Football Association has rendered an unqualified apology to the people of Ghana, and for equal measure has assured us of their desire to move forward with Kwesi Appiah.

For the charges of corruption, poor organisation, and poor tactics there was no response, save an apology to soothe our hearts and allow them lead us forward to greater heights.

“Admittedly the performance of the team fell below the expectations of many Ghanaians” Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi, the FA President said at a press briefing organised this afternoon.

“Our inability to qualify to the second round broke many Ghanaian hearts. We wish to offer our unqualified apologies for the disappointment.”

At least they have the grace to have realised Ghanaians were far from pleased with the appearance we made, but for those who have many questions this apology would be poor recompense.

The GFA President also admitted that the Management Committees are going to be reviewed, not only that of the Black Stars of all the national teams. This is slightly more welcome news, but the results this “review” would yield remains to be seen.

Many questions have been raised over the efficacy of these committees, particularly after it emerged Ghana sent three times more officials than players to the world cup. Sulley Muntari got into a fracas with one of the committee members, and despite his reprehensible actions, he raised legitimate questions about the role of all these officials.

It is all well and good to make the proper noises, and that is what the GFA are doing right now, but there has been no admission of fault from anyone within the organisation; and absent admission of culpability it is difficult to see how any changes would be made. Why make changes when we cannot see the wrong we have done?

Another order of business was a vote of confidence in coach Kwesi Appiah. After leading Ghana to one of her worst African Cups in recent years and her worst world cup in history, the GFA has expressed full confidence in him and are making preparations for a new contract.

“The Executive Committee has full confidence in Kwesi Appiah and his ability to do the job. They have instructed that the necessary action about his new contract should be completed” Kwesi Nyantakyi said.

Kwesi Appiah was tactically poor in Brazil, he lost part of his dressing room, and his stubborn pride led to our best player utilised as a left back. Yet he is rewarded with a new contract.

The man himself says he would not resign, despite calls from many Ghanaians to do so. “I am determined to continue working with the team” He said at the press conference.

Like I said, you have to recognise your shortcomings to make improvements, yet it seems neither the GFA nor Kwesi Appiah recognise any fault.

For now we wait, and see the direction events take. The one thing we can say for sure is that it is not apologies we need from them, only reform.

  1. Kwesi appiah should take a seat and allow someone else to do the job. What black star needs right now is tutorial on how to score goals and nothing else. They play well but cant score so if a foreign coach can train them for 2years will help the entire nation. The question is why did they waited so long to disbursed their money? I had a feeling these officials were going to cheat the boys thanx to Sulley and Kevin for standing out for their teams.
