Another Committee? Government of Ghana Sets Up 3 Member Committee to Investigate Black Stars World Cup Campaign Wahala + GoalKeeper-Adam Kwarasey Speaks Up

Since the Black Stars returned from the worst world cup campaign in the history of the world cup, one thing that has looked inevitable was the forming of a committee to investigate what happened. With our past experiences with committees, most Ghanaians were not enthused about the idea, but the government has set this one up anyway.

New sports minister Mahama Ayariga announced the formation of the committee yesterday. The committee is headed by an Appeals Court Justice, Senyo Dzamele, the other two members being veteran sports journalist Moses Foh Amoaning and Kofi Anokye Darko.

The committee has been mandated to:

a) To enquire into matters relating to Ghana’s Black Stars team’s preparation for the tournament and possible lapses therein which might have caused their early exit from the tournament.

b) To enquire into matters relating to the management of the Ghana Black Stars team and events in their camp during the tournament.

c. To inquire into matters relating to Ghana’s treatment of Ghanaian football fans who were sent to support the Black Stars by the Ministry of Youth and Sports

d. Advise government on the financing of activities of the Senior National Team and other national teams

e. To inquire into all other related matters of public interest concerning the organization of Ghana’s Black Stars’ participation in the tournament.

The Committee has thirty days to present their report.

Ordinarily, after the events in Brazil an investigation of some kind would be welcomed, because things were rotten on so many levels and getting to the bottom of it should be paramount. However, we’ve seen what committees in this country has yielded in the past, and setting up another one to consume public funds and come out with findings that would not be implemented is the very definition of wasting public resources.

Besides no one has shown any inclination to take action against those who failed in Brazil. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has been rewarded with a job at the presidency; the GFA bosses are not accountable to government, so whatever findings relating to their role in the organisational shambles cannot be enforced because FIFA frowns on government interference in sports. So what exactly is this committee supposed to do?

We will just have to wait the thirty days to see, but personally I have little hope of anything good coming out of this.

More fallout from the Black Stars world cup, Goalkeeper-Adam Kwarasey has announced he is considering quitting the side because as far as he is concerned, performance is not what dictates who plays for the team.

The Stromgodset goalkeeper was in post for Ghana’s first game against the USA, but was then benched for the two subsequent games. Kwarasey feels there are other factors besides performances determining who plays for the side.

“It’s no point travelling to Ghana if its other things that decides if you play or not. We had a match meeting four or five hours before the game (against Germany). At that meeting I was in the team. Then it was a little bit back and forward. And suddenly I was out. I asked why. The coach didn’t look me in the eyes. He just looked down and said sorry. Then I understood that it probably wasn’t his choice”

Kwarasey spoke on the issues raised by Boateng and others, which has since been debunked by the FA, but he says he does not blame him, and Muntari, for their actions in Brazil.

“(There was) trouble with the flights, the hotels and internal problems. I think it was unfair (sacking the two players). I don’t think they did anything wrong. They stood up for the rest of the players. They spoke out, they told the truth. The truth was maybe too much for the guys running the FA,”

Interesting words from the goalkeeper, hinting at yet more problems within the team; as if what we have heard already was not enough. Maybe the committee would get to the bottom of these allegations too.
