‘Light Skin Rules’…The Truth, the Reality & the Preference

Bleaching and Accent

I was tagged with the below video on Facebook by a friend and after watching it, I almost dropped dead in shocked as the video sort of confirms the arguments certain people have made all along that, we are somewhat predisposed to accept “light skin as supreme to dark skin”.

In fact, though the video is worrying, it is the many arguments and developments I have come across over the years that hurts—a direct confirmation that, it is something which is in us, with us and has been accepted by us at all levels of life.

Forget about the many celebrities who have changed in complexion through skin lightening or bleaching, and consider the ordinary people in our various societies, the speed with which some have become light over night and our constant admiration for light skin create unending waves of shock.

Just like an article we published some few months ago titled “Light Skin Rules Because All The Dark Skin People & Activists Are ‘Bleaching’ Their Photos” mentioned, “It is not a mere coincidence that despite the numerous attempts to fly dark skin, even the campaigners continue to cherish and plant the notion of light skin supremacy in the minds of the same people they seek to protect—through the use of countless image colouring techniques and filters on social media”

Many of us may not have bleached our real skin but we have bleached our photos on instagram and facebook to look far lighter than we are—a practical stretch of the argument the below video seeks to make, that we are born to attach some sort of supremacy to light skin. It seems we have all bleached our minds…

Who would have taught these children that beauty lives in colour and for a fact, it is the light skin that is beautiful, adorable and supreme?

Like other forms of corrupt worldview, the notion of “light skin rules” goes beyond objectivity and critical thinking; it dwells in our subconscious memory. That is the only justifiable argument I can find for the displacement in even children as young as those in the video, vouching that light skin rules and it is the acceptable worldview.

Watch the video below and tell us what you think and where you think the problem comes from (video make take a few seconds to show up)

  1. This is really sad. So who taught these kids that the light skin dolls are the beautiful ones and the dark skin ones are ugly? At this small age, I don’t think anyone is teaching them that except their parents or maybe it is in the mind as Chris pointed out. Really sad and unbelievable

    • Parents don’t teach them anything. My brown skinned son asked me why he is black but he wants to be white. The thing is he doesn’t understand why we’re not all the same. He is in a white populated area and school so to him, everyone should be the same.

  2. Light skin definitely rules. Yes, it does. So? It’s not a bad thing to be black? Neither is it the best thing to be white. Majority just carries the vote. Light skin of course rules real good.

    • Actually, white rules and their mindset always something to write home about. You can always discuss and relate to them without being discouraged. They push you up, they don’t bring you down. If you have experienced them, u know what I’m talking about. Peace out!

  3. I don’t know why people are burying their head in the sand. Light skin of course is ruling. Hypocrites join in the train to tell them off and they go for them as well. A guy will tell you he is dark but he wants his children to be ebony so his choice will be a fairer lady. What i don’t get is why people assume that every fair person is bleaching and those even lightening their skin are bold enough to tell you to mind your business if you ask them why. That is what is giving them the customers so someone campaigning and complaining about them is not even bothering them. We should leave people to do what they like….after all bleachers don’t feed me neither do i feed them.

    • What kind of customers? Now I know why they say ‘light skin’ ones are ashawos. Do you have any idea what the society will become if we leave people to do what they like? No offense, but are you light skin? If so, how many “customers” have you had so far?

  4. The problem will forever live on. Black people themselves feel inferior to the white, and the black feel inferior to fair people

  5. The problem is that everything ‘good’ is represented by white and everything ‘bad’ is represented by black. Children has seen the pictures of ‘Jesus’, ‘God’ , and the ‘devil’. They are told that Jesus and God are so wonderful whilst the devil is so wicked. They pick on this and connect it with the pictures, form their own Judgment and try to associate anything black with the same adjectives used to describe the ‘devil’.

What’s up with some of the comments? Some people are turning this into a racial debate. This isn’t a debate about which race is better! People should know that the black race is not only made up of the tiny black populations in West, East and South Africa. It’s just ignorant for anyone to say that “you can relate to whites without being discouraged”. What exactly has encouragement and discouragement got to do with being black or white? I want it to be on record that character traits has absolutely nothing to do with the race of a person. Thousands of black people have pushed people to the top! Not everyone is caught up in these stereotypes: LET IT STOP!!!

Some people are trying so hard to force “light skin rules” down our throats. What does it rule if I may ask? Why do I have the feeling that the ‘light’ skin ones are beginning to get offended? Some sensible people are working so hard to help people to appreciate their skin color and not buy into stereotypes. The “Stop Bleaching” campaign is NOT to hate on any ‘light skin’ person: so chill out. #LoveYourSkin #stopbleaching

    • White rules. Full stop! Naanyin! The truth must be told the way it is, don’t get it twisted. Do you know what the world would have become if majority of the worlds population is black? U don’t wanna know. Trust me. God knows best, n put them only in some part of Africa. Slave trade helped dispersed them on other continents. Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Madagascar, etc are not black n even more awesome to see how in SA’ belongs to both white n black. U definitely compare ur Accra to Johannesburg. That’ s the power of having the whites around and more. I understand u. some truth hurts, but it must be told just the way it is.

  6. Hmmmmm very sad they think the black dolls are bad! But I think even our own black people want to be white…my brother wants his children to have a fair skin so he dates only white or very fair skin girls…i sometimes wonder what he will do if one of his kids take his skin colour

    • It is due to the fact thatwe have embraced the european standard of beauty which must be addressed .

This has led to self hate. Your brother is not the only person who is suffering from sef hate.

In fact i have even heard of mothers/ fathers advising their dark skinned children not to marry dark skinned people so that their kids will not be too dark.

Insults such as ” tuntum se bedie” ir phrases such as obibini se
Broni cause us to bleach our skin and despise our heritage.

Thats why it is important to take care of what we see and advise our kids.

This is a very complex. Inferiority cimplex, amo.g people of african origin
