Lesbianism and Homosexuality in Ghana | Former UK Borough Mayor Joins the Discussion

lesbians kissing

I am delighted that this subject is now in the public domain and being openly discussed. For years I have been advocating that this subject, though a taboo in Ghana should be debated in the open.

I urged our intellectuals, students, professionals and politicians to openly talk about it but to no avail. I was in Ghana nearly two years ago when President Mahama nominated Ms Lithur as Minister for Gender etc. I was stunned, angry and sad when the Ghana Students Union went on a demonstration against her nomination. Their reason? She would encourage homosexuality and lesbianism in Ghana.

I found it neantherdal, reactionary and incredibly stupid that a student organisation that was supposed to be modern and open- minded would stoop to this. Yes we openly and unashamedly embrace foreign cultures and practices.

We are proud to jettison our Ghanaian names for foreign ones. We are proud to even pronounce our names the way white folks pronounce them. We are proud to be Christians and Muslim – these are NOT natural to us as Ghanaians.

Homosexuality and lesbianism are natural to all cultures – European, African, Asian. We have no right to demonise people who exercise their natural right to choose a partner of the same sex. Equal rights for all.

Editor’s note:

Dear former Mayor, I am shocked that the behaviour of these particular Ghanaian students amazed you—not because it is not shocking, but because you should have long known that most Ghanaians (including students) have refused to be intelligent, acquire knowledge though have been to school, are hypocrites and have failed to reason…

‘Gayism’ like any other thing (new or old) must be opened for discussion—just as in the UK today, Britain leaving or staying in the EU has become a discourse on its own.

But the problem of a greater number of Ghanaians is the fact that, they are ignorant and have assumed dogmatic positions on issues, not influenced by knowledge but by ignorance.

Therefore, they cannot place any substantive arguments to support their positions or discredit the positions of others. Except to insult those engaging in a discourse and call them all manner of names. And they end it all by, you will go to HELL.

When people refuse to be educated (not a matter of having a P.hd because I know where you can easily buy one from), they are left in a state like most Ghanaians are now…

Thanks…

  2. We don’t want any homosexuality in Ghana. If you love ‘ homosexuality’ so much stay in the UK. No one is forcing you to go to Ghana. We live on a sad world where our priorities are misplaced. Right is now wrong and wrong is right. You also used your article to demonise Ghanaians calling us ignorant, backward and Neanderthal. Yeah that’s a good way together your point across. I often find out that gay rights advocates who promote so called open minded ness are the most closed minded people. They often call any one who disagrees with them a homophobe, discriminatory…

  3. As a Ghanaian lesbian woman living in abroad, I find it sad when Africans refuse to understand and accord others their right to choose whatever partner they want. Africans are so back in their thinking to the extent that it is ridiculous.

      • So now Chris is gay? lol. I am GAY and I am proud of that but I never know when Chris became GAY because I have known him for years as a heterosexual so you are the one telling me now. What has God got to do with homosexuals? So the animals which practice homosexual too God will judge them and punish them? Oh

        • Stop insulting Africans. If you wanna be gay. fine, it’s your own problem but don’t force your agenda upon us. We have more important problems to deal with. We care about gaining life’s necessities and living till the next day , leading clean moral lives. Don’t bother us with your gay agenda. If you hate Africa so bad and you are so embarrassed about it no one is forcing to be African or Ghanaian , renounce your citizen and don’t step foot there or else shut up

  6. This mayor is a joke . What good has he been to the nation but want to wreck it? And on top of it he’s angry sad and stunned by Ghana students union’s demonstration . Was gay ism the best thing he could offer to talk about. He’s STUPID I GUESS . Our economy is in a mess and all he could get angry over is gay ism. He has no head. He is blind. There are a lot he could have talked about like hungry children on the street , sanitation problems, unemployed graduates etc. I am more than disappointed in him? I wish I could see him face to face and talk him sense. Uk had built their nation so long before the so called gay ism became acceptable . We have a long we to go as a nation and as a man of his caliber should know that some things are more important than others . I’m pissed

  7. It is not like there are no gays in Ghana. And it is not like we are burning them on stakes but to make a law to legalise it, is a subtle satanic way of choosing to officially align ourselves with the world system of the anti christ. I don’t ever remember gays seeing gays being abused or beaten in Ghanaian society. I am a well travelled Ghanaian living in Ghana. It is foolish to assert that we are backward because something as sexuality can change our countries destiny for the better. How stupid! Besides, how has the many laws we already have in Ghana helped us??? Even the human rights? Making new laws won’t help us, neither would gay right! It is foolish, satanic, backward and perverse!

  9. Don’t be in such a hurry to condemn a person because he doesn’t do what you do, or think as you think. There was a time when you didn’t know what you know today… You guys are always quick to criticize people on morality, meanwhile you are the same people sleeping around with peoples husbands and wifes, dating two or three people at a time, gossiping and doing of unspeakable act, which seems okay or habitual to you. On other hand “HOMOSEXUALITY” is condemned as the biggest sin ever… God help us all!!!

  11. Kwasia…the mayor fool but we can forgive him. He knows next to nothing about Africa and about the humanity he would want to trick others into thinking he is a part of and he is probably superior because he accepts such stupidity as gay and lesbian folly. But the editor we cannot forgive, cos I believe he is Ghanaian – unless this is another of those quack sites they are using to control our thoughts and get us to accept a rotten western lifestyle. Mo y3 nkwasiafo paaa… If being natural is backward, give us backward anyday. FOOLS!
