Pupils Sit on Piled-Up Cement Blocks to Learn in 21st Century Ghana

Pupils in Ghana

I have written several articles about how disappointed Ghana has become in fact and in the eyes of its own citizens—both home and abroad, and now I feel like there is no point in keeping up with these write-ups.

This is because; I keep pointing out the same set of problems, perpetuated by the same gang of people in charge of affairs—without anything changing.

I was sent a link to an article written by ‘The Finder’ newspaper which mentions that, there are still schools in Ghana where pupils sit on piled-up blocks to learn—and I asked myself, so this is 21st century Ghana…right?

And to think that this is the same country with Ministers driving in “excessively” expensive cars, the same country that flew millions of dollars to Brazil makes me wonder if we ever understand the concept of having priorities as people…

According to the report, the condition in which pupils at “Amenam Local Authority Primary and Junior High School study hoping that the education they receive will ensure a better future for them is beyond deplorable”.

“The six-block classroom is built of clay. Part of the roof has been ripped off- the effects of severe weather. Inside the classrooms, there are just about a few broken desks” the paper added..

“Even pupils in the kindergarten department, between three and five years, do not have seats at all. They have to carry kitchen stools to school in order to study. Those who cannot afford the kitchen stools sit and write on pile-up cement blocks.”

Sad right? Now I hope you understand why Ghanaians will seek for asylum in Brazil!

  1. And some where in that same country the government is spending money on sanitary pads, wouldn’t it have been nicer if these kids were seated on chairs & tables? Maybe giving out free pads is more important to him than this.

  2. What did our leaders actually go to school for? Did they become leaders in order to make life a living hell for the populace or just to enrich themselves and their corrupt cronies? I don’t think they would have made it this far if they schooled under such harsh conditions. When i watch them at their useless and pompous state functions i bow my head in shame. They present themselves to the people as astute personalities and pride themselves in being ”big” men in society with laughable titles, when in truth they are nothing but desperate thieves dressed in suit and tie. I suppose that brainless minister of education (a woman by the way) couldn’t care less about the plight of these little children; after all she’s made it into the fraternity of criminals living lavishly of state funds by driving in fancy cars, staying in upper class neighborhoods and giving their kids world-class education who in essence are not different from these kids sitting on stones to learn. This is the outcome of brain-dead men and women steering the affairs of our once vibrant nation. Sorry Ghana, wish you a speedy recovery.

  3. This is one country with very clueless leaders; what serious country would make it a priority to airlift almost $4m to appease some spoilt soccer players in Brazil, but can’t provide mere furniture for its schools? I’m lost for words…this makes me sick!!!

  4. My candid opinion. Until we stop blaming people who we ourselves voted for to become leaders we will still be left in the dark. Vincent, after seeing this article, it will be inspiring to see you donating some chairs and tables to these school children and supporting with the very little you have. I will say this, in as much as the government and or political leaders are responsible, we are also responsible for what is happening to our Ghana. Lets teach them how to do it, and if they fail to learn, lets ignore them and do what we can do.
