Are the Countless Beauty Pageants We Have Here Not Exploiting & Disempowering Innocent Ladies?

Miss France Beauty Pageant 2010

In recent years, beauty pageants have increased drastically in numbers. If nothing at all, I can possibly (out of my head) name about 50 beauty pageantry shows in Ghana; starting from Miss Abokobi to all those having ‘Miss’ as their prefix.

Such beauty shows keep popping up every single day, and I know it will continue as long as we live. However, I have tried to analyse the importance of such beauty pageants but have not been positively convinced so much.

Beauty pageants basically refer to contests that primarily lay emphasis on physical beauty of the participating contestants, although intelligence and talent are sometimes incorporated.

In every industry or institution, the various audiences are blind to what goes into the running of the industry or institution. That’s how come some people will perceive some companies as very reputable that pay their workers good amount of money. They will do whatever they can within their powers to get employed in such companies. Such people become shocked when they are employed and find out that what they have been thinking was not so.

Such is the case with beauty pageants. Many young ladies are more than happy to be part of the train when auditions are opened. Some go to the extent of borrowing money from friends to buy audition forms.

However, the dreams of most of these ladies are smashed when they are faced with the unexpected. I am more than sure someone like Giuseppina Baafi (don’t even know which title to assign her – whether Miss Ghana 2013 or former Miss Ghana 2013) never expected what happened between Exclusive Events Ghana and herself.

**NEW COLUMN: I Hate Mondays! So Much It Affects My Sundays

Thelma Louis
Thelma Louis

First, why do people think if I couldn’t perform a task or finish a problem by Friday 5pm, I will have a different answer by Monday 8am?

This particular Monday morning I had decided to take matters into my own hands and change my fate. At 7.30am I started calling everybody I expected will call me at 8.00 to give them a dose of their own medicine.

Everybody was shocked including my boyfriend who promised to come by the night before but didn’t show, didn’t call… I wanted to be sure he didn’t die on his way to see me. Better tell him I was quitting my job before he beat me to it and told me he had a bad stomach ache… His third excuse in the past two weeks. I had made a mental note to check my red book to see if it was pre-break up sign.

I crawled out of the bed I spent my entire Sunday in.

My knee gave a funny sound… Hmm I am thirty-seven, people say I look young for my age. Tell that to my knee who could barely support my skill last time I was trying to perform a sit across dance for my boyfriend during our lovemaking. Oh why are men getting so lazy in bed? The dude just wanted to lie there… A sheepish smile on his face suggesting he was enjoying my wriggles whiles I kept thinking I need me a younger man who will be more than happy to please me in bed.

Mondays… The sun is out too early, everybody is in a hurry to nowhere and Accra has a stench from all the rubbish people pushed out of their homes over the weekend. I made a mental note to vote anybody but this government in the next election. I grew up loving Rawlings. Why the hell not. The man was damn charismatic, he may not have been the most intelligent as the opposition kept telling us but he put his money where his mouth was. He took decisions, the good, the bad, the ugly. These days I forget who is in charge, AMA or the young man knocking relentlessly on my window asking me to buy ‘yooyi’ for breakfast.

Is Trial Marriage the Answer to Obtaining An Endless Happy Marriage?

Couple in Bed

Of course, there is nothing new in the idea of two people living together without first marrying. What is new is the number of people candidly doing so.

After all, I know of a certain man in Koforidua who has 3 grown up children with 3 different women to which he did not marry any of them. Aside those 3 trial marriages, he had a 4th trial marriage, and now he is in the 5th trial marriage.

Besides the obvious conflict for religious conscience and societal values, the question is: Do couples who engage in trial marriages enjoy such marriages? Does this cohabitation lead them into a permanent relationship?

The truth is that, though some unwed couples may live together for a lifetime, some also may be short-lived. The fruitage of short-lived trial marriages may be as bitter and often as emotionally disastrous as divorce.

One definition of trial is experiment. Can anyone afford an experimental marriage? After all, we are not discussing sharing a piece of clothing. If the cloth is torn, one simply goes out and buys another garment. But the emotional scar tissue of a broken intimate relationship is far-reaching; it has brought some to the point of suicide. Even those couples who genuinely care for each other face an emotion-jarring problem: insecurity.

In trial marriages, the people involved live together and do everything together as married couples without much commitment. The goal of such marriages is for the parties involved to assess themselves and see if they can really live together as married couples.

The first time I ever heard of this trial issue was when I once asked a lady (who liked me a lot & I liked her too) if we could start a relationship. I was quite shocked by her answer when she told me she wants us to be in a trial relationship before we proceed on to a real one.

In the trial relationship, we did everything that those in normal relationships do. So I said to myself, if this is all the trial thing is about, then I don’t want to proceed to the normal relationship.

We Have a BIG Problem in Africa | And It’s Called Literary Illiteracy

Books

After the death of literary genius Chinua Achebe a little over a year ago, I got to thinking about another of the little problems that worry us as a continent. That is, our propensity to stay away from the written word, to wit, books.

I mentioned that problem in a little homage I paid to Achebe which can be found here. A year on and I still find it a relevant issue that most of us do not even realise is a problem.

When I mention books here I’m not referring to only novels, but any kind of published material that holds some sort of relevant knowledge on any subject. There is a book published on any subject under the sun, and for the African taking the time to pore through it is a task too far.

And why should you read? We live in a time of substantial development in technology, particularly one pertaining to entertainment or leisure. We have social media, television and radio churning out more innovative programming all the time to arrest the attention of the populace. In this environment finding the time to take a book to read, whether a novel or any other kind, is becoming next to impossible.

And that is all before you factor in our natural disinclination to reading. The average African would rather do anything else than read, and would not do it unless it was absolutely necessary. This has led to a little problem I like to call literary illiteracy.

This is a phenomenon where you have people who are highly functional in any other endeavour, but absolutely illiterate when it comes to reading. Now not reading is not going to kill these people or anything, but what it does is prevent them from enjoying the several little benefits that a healthy interest in reading brings.

The most talked about benefit of reading is the expansion in vocabulary and frankly it is not an overstatement. Spending so much time around words makes you overtly familiar with them, thus making your use of them in your speech so much easier. There are several in-built phrases in Ghanaian English that a healthy reading habit would knock right out of you.

Understanding Women is an Attempt to Understand the MIND of GOD

Understanding Women
Understanding Women

I do not have to repeat that on a good day, I am an atheist and on a bad day, I am agnostic—and therefore, my use of GOD in this article runs alongside Einstein or Machio Kaku’s understanding of GOD.

My usage of GOD is not in reference to the God that takes side in wars or answers prayers. I am talking about a complex mind that runs parallel to logic and reason.

Women are largely seen as vulnerable, emotional and caring beings whose ways cannot be calculated, predicted and mostly their actions violate well defined laws…

Over the years, I’ve come to realize that most women are not vulnerable and are far from the well defined characters attributed to them. The truth about women is; they are complex and every complex entity cannot be easily understood, domesticated and bring to live under rules—except, of course if it is their own rules. Even that, they may get up one day and decide to vary the rules.

Holding unto any sort of relationship with such a complex being will definitely be characterised by shocks, surprises and mood swings—and as I said, these things can never be predicted or understood.

Most women do not want anything, yet they claim to want something. Most women believe in savings and yet want to buy expensive clothes.

The complexity of a woman’s mind is beyond measure and dealing with them on simple terms does not work. Even if you decide to jump to their complex level, it wouldn’t work—as the complexities will get jammed—-another reason why they don’t get on well with each other, I think…

Men are mostly fooled into believing it is the simple things that matter to women—of course these things do, but they are just the foundation stones to wanting the bigger things. Don’t ever get stuck with the simple things…

You can never win an argument with a woman and most men who have tried stealing a win eventually find themselves dead before achieving that. It is not that their arguments are exceptionally great, it is just that their arguments cover it all—no room for yours, except to agree!
