THE BIG QUESTION: Can LOVE Be Possible Without LUST?

Love or Lust
Love or Lust

The world is labelled with tons of abstract concepts around which we structure much of our lives. Honour, Faith, Integrity, and the above two, love and lust.

As with such concepts, it’s never easy to land on a clear definition of the phenomenon. You can ask ten people to tell you what love is and chances are you would end up with ten different definitions.

To simplify things, my phone’s dictionary is going to define the two for us. Love, it says, is ‘strong affection for’ someone or something I imagine. Lust, is ‘a strong sexual desire for’.

Now what I plan to tackle today is whether love as we understand it is possible without lust? There seem to be this belief in our society where love has been tagged with all these positive connotations, whereas lust is treated as something not entirely healthy.

People have all these romantic notion tied to love, not to be sexist here but particularly our ladies. Lust not so much; everyone sees it as this animal desire that expires as soon as it is satisfied, and does not lead to anything significant in the long run.

After a lot of thought on the matter, I’ve drawn the conclusion that everything I’ve been raised to believe in this area cannot be right, and love is not possible without lust.

A key reason why a man would go for any woman is desire, and desire is a key component of lust. To put it bluntly, you see something, you desire it, and you go after it.

After sampling the goods (or not, everyone has their timetable), you make a conscious decision whether to continue the pursuit or explore other avenues. Obviously, a lot of other factors weigh in when making your final decision, but the sexual element cannot and should not be discounted.

Anyway the core point here is that love is borne out of lust, at least that’s the way I see it. That initial wanting that drives you to chase after a woman, whom later on might become the love of your life, is peppered with lust whether we want to admit it or no.

I could be wrong here, but then I lack the constitution to appreciate a concept as profound as love.

So tell us what you think, particularly the ladies. Am I right or am I wrong?
