Christians are the Biggest Argument Against Christianity

Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ

The condescension and barely masked pity Christians put on whenever someone of no faith put their arguments across can be pretty galling at times. At that moment they reinforce their beliefs in how they are on the right path and how the other person would ‘see’ when judgement day comes around.

It’s seen everywhere, even in the comments section of this site whenever one of these posts is published. Yet the truth cannot be further from what is portrayed. To the unbeliever, Christians themselves remain the biggest argument against turning to Christ.

And you know why that is? It’s because we are humans, and humans inherently are selfish, greedy, covetous, and millions of other deprecating qualities. Of course, we can be wonderful, kind, courteous, and millions of other virtuous qualities as well, but one does not cancel out the other.

In the words of Stannis Baratheon in the novel ‘A Clash of Kings’, “A good act does not wash out the bad, nor a bad act the good. Each should have its own reward”

As humans we are a veritable mix of both qualities, and it shows in our interactions with each other. Yet Christians like to pretend it’s not, and that they are striving for a certain holiness as prescribed by their faith.

Yet I am surrounded by people who break the creed they are supposed to go by all the time. People who are not supposed to lie, cheat, steal, fornicate, insult others, etc; do so with impunity every single day. They go through the week racking up their sin points, then go to church on Sunday and come back and pretend they’re better than everyone else.

You’re not.

And it is not because you’re Christian, or Muslim, or Atheist or Agnostic; it’s because you are human. That is what it means to be human, to be good and bad and nice and cruel all wrapped into one little body. To pretend to be otherwise is just folly, and borders on the hypocritical.

There, that was the point I was building to; Christians are the worst hypocrites. And if you do not share the faith you only need study the lives of the nearest Christians and you would have no inclination to join.

The Pastors are the worst, and we see it in Ghana now with a lot of them taking advantage of people, filling their coffers whilst the poor in the congregation starve, donating their meagre savings to the pastor to continue swelling his purse.

Sure there are the good ones, those who truly believe and who strive to be the best they can be. Those are the best advertisements for the faith, but they remain few and far between.

You can look at this piece in two ways, and choose your reaction accordingly. You can see it as an unwarranted attack of the Christian faith, or just a basic explanation of human psychology and why pretending things are otherwise is indeed hypocritical.

If Christians are to make a compelling argument for others to join the faith, they must practice what they preach. The virtues the Bible esteems must be seen in every facet of their lives, and they must live and breathe it every moment of the day.

This principle holds in any other endeavour, politics particularly, why shouldn’t religious people be held towards the same standards?

Until then, Christians themselves remain the biggest argument against Christianity.

  1. There are reasons why this argument is silly from any angle you look at it. Let’s start off with an analogy here. Supposed Mercedes released a new model Benz and claimed it to be the best car they’ve made and instructed buyers to strictly read the manual to know how it’s supposed to be operated. Do you base your decision to purchase new Model on how other purchasers are driving it badly (even though you’ve seen some people driving it the way it should be)? Or do you go to test drive it by the book to see if it’s truly what Mercedes claims it to be?

Gc staff are of the most despicable kind. Full of double standards and lies ( especially) when it comes to matters of religion. You seek to remove religion from the minds of people but you do the same things you accuse religion of. You exhibit ample blind faith and publish misleading articles about Christianity. Well some of us are critical thinkers and your tactics don’t help your cause with us.

You can target your average Ghanaian ( those that you keep bashing as illiterates) and hope they fall for hollow arguments but I’m sorry you’ll have to try harder with some of us. Good day GC.

    • Nope, the argument makes perfect sense. If Mercedes Benz manufactures a new car they claim to be perfect (with an operational manuals etc) & yet over a period of 1 year, majority of road accidents around the world involve this new car, the new car will soon be tagged as ‘the accident car’. This will be the case even if Mercedes Benz is able to bring engineers to test their car & prove beyond all reasonable doubt that it’s perfect & all the accidents were caused by drunk drivers. The question on everyone’s mind will be that ‘if you claim this car is so perfect, why’s it always involved in an accident’? People will just not be moved to buy the new car. Recently, when Malaysian Airlines was faced with 2 misfortunes (a missing plane that has still not been explained & being shot by Ukrainian rebels) & suddenly their stocks crashed & few people wanted to fly on that airline anymore. I work in the corporate world & if Chanel releases a new power suit & I see it being worn trashily by trashy people, as a working professional, I won’t be motivated to buy the dress. In all these scenarios, the product was perfect & yet the way people who managed it or purchased it used it can put off potential purchasers. This is why a brand like Johnnie Walker would always like their product to be endorsed by well respected businessmen etc.

Similarly, you Christians claim that your religion is a religion of love, that when you came to Christ, you became born again & became holy people. Indeed, you claim that you’re serving a God of love, who’s guiding your steps & making you better people. & yet day in day out, there are countless news reports about how horrible you & your pastors behave & treat people. Hell yes, that would put people off the religion & cause people to doubt that your claims are true. Even the way most Christians respond to criticisms about their religion is off-putting. As an agnostic, if someone criticizes agnoticism ( kind of like how we were arguing back & forth yesterday), it makes me happy. I really appreciate it as it gets me to think deeper. Anecdotally (& from what you read on this blog), this is not how most Christians react to criticisms on their faith. They get angry, they insult etc. just cos someone doesn’t share their opinion. & yet this is not how the Christ they serve reportedly dealt with people who challenged his beliefs. Read about how your Christ, for example, dealt with the Samaritan woman who criticized his religious place of worship. Most of Jesus’ severe judgments were reserved for the leaders of his religion who were hypocrites (eg: Pharisees) & not people who did not share his faith. On the other hand, he expressed a lot of love to ‘sinners’, gentiles etc. which drew them to him. ‘Christ’-ians will do well to follow their ‘Christ’s’ example.

      • Your first argument pretty much tells of your unwillingness to accept truth.

You stated that “…the new car will soon be tagged as ‘the accident car’. This will be the case even if Mercedes Benz is able to bring engineers to test their car & prove beyond all reasonable doubt that it’s perfect & all the accidents were caused by drunk drivers”.
        – You are admitting first of all that Mercedes has proven beyond ALL REASONABLE DOUBT that the car is perfect. In the same breath you are saying you still would tag the car as faulty?? That doesn’t sound like you are looking for truth at all!

Logically if its been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the car is perfect and that drunk driving is the cause of accidents then that encourages me to purchase the car especially if i am not a drunk driver. After all, my ultimate goal is my safety. Not what someone else is thinking about me as i drive my new car. And your Chanel analogy further proves my point. If Chanel’s suit is really what it claims to be, then i couldn’t care any less what kind of people are wearing it (trashy or classy). That is the point. If Christianity really is true, and eternity is on the line, then why should the next man’s tainting of it make me not want to accept it? After all, its my eternity that’s on the line.

Yes its required of christians to be model citizens. But Christianity isn’t about christians. Its about Jesus! Before you shun christianity because i, who professes to be christian, am indulging in adultery, ask yourself these two questions:
        1. Is Christianity about me?
        2. If its about Jesus, would he be an adulterer or philanderer?
I believe the answers will be adequate reason why a faulty christian shouldn’t be your model.
Furthermore, the bible, the Holy scripture of christians, even warns about such christians. Read Revelations 2 if you do not believe that.

you stated “In all these scenarios, the product was perfect & yet the way people who managed it or purchased it used it can put off potential purchasers”.
        – I say the customers are looking for something else but not the truth claims of the product. And that is even true because its pretty common for people to buy things that are in style even if it is not providing the highest quality of what it claims to provide. But Christianity isn’t even like that. There is all of eternity at stake. If i do not die when i leave this earth, and if there is a life of either pure bliss or pure pain for eternity ahead of me, then i better not look at how people are misrepresenting Christianity but rather what they ought to do and do that.

        • In legal parlance, when we say that something has been proven ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ to have occurred, it means (in layman language) that it’s been proven that there’s a high probability that the event occurred . There’s still the probability (albeit slight) that it never occurred. But as any statistician would tell you, the mere fact that an event has even a 0.0001% of occurring doesn’t mean that it will NEVER occur. Which is why someone may be diagnosed with a ‘rare’ illness that he had a 1 in a million chance of getting.

Therefore, if a newly manufactured car is proven beyond all reasonable doubt to be perfect, there’s still the slight possibility that it’s not. & as such, if almost every accident that occurs in the subsequent year involves this car, then commonsense alone would guide most people to avoid that car. Of course, you may be foolhardy enough to still buy the car but that would be YOU. (Edited) & this is the reason why people in PR & marketing always try to get corporations & products associated with people who are generally held in high esteem (celebrities, philanthropists). Because by the time we’re adults, most of us have imbibed the ‘if it walks like a duck & talks like one…’principle. In other words, most of us have learnt to disassociate from products which are majorly used by ‘dodgy’ people or which are involved in ‘dodgy’ situations because ‘if the product were so great, why is it only used by dodgy people (or why is it always involved in dodgy situations?)

That is what this article is saying: that Christians are the biggest argument against Christianity. To date, there’s zero proof that God exists or any of the claims that Christians make is true. Therefore, those of us deciding to believe it or not can only make a decision after considering diverse factors. One of these factors is the behavior of Christians. A tenet of Christianity is that God is love & as such when you get born again, the Holy Spirit puts his love in your heart. However, if empirical evidence shows that almost all Christians are hateful or condescending towards those of a different opinion (eg: calling them ‘closed minded’ etc). then it strengthens the argument that Christianity isn’t loving or capable of making people loving. Likewise, we’re inclined to disbelieve the claim that when you come to Jesus, he helps you stop stealing, lying, cheating etc. because we know of too many Christians who repeatedly steal, lie, cheat etc.

          • Increasingly your arguments are moving into absurdities here. It was you who introduced specialists who proved this car to be perfect and proved drunk driving to be the cause of the accidents. It was you, not me. Even by your own standards of perfect to mean not a 100% but having a high improbability of it being faulty in the real world, Its ridiculous to say that is not enough guarantee for you to purchase it. After all if the same standards were to be applied everywhere, then since proven perfect beyond all reasonable doubt isn’t enough reason to trust something, we cannot even be sure that our heads will not fall off our own shoulders while we are asleep. And surely we cannot even trust that our eyes will not pop out of our heads while brushing our heads. What i’m saying is, in the real world, proven beyond reasonable doubt, even though isn’t mathematically 100% is, dare I say, perfect for real world applications and so a car proven beyond all reasonable doubt to be perfect is good enough for any reasonable person.

And whats this marketing and PR thing you keep saying? Is that what you really think Christianity is about? Yes Christians are tasked with the great commission but at the end of the day, you are to account for your own life and so it definitely isn’t adequate to blame your situation on the lives of other people. Seems to me you do not understand the concept here.

And what is it about christians calling others close minded? aren’t there atheists who are even more condescending and claim christian thinking and reasoning to be vacuous? Do you really want me to point out articles on here that claims religious people are dumb and credulous and all those words they use? Isn’t it such a double edged sword you are using here? Would it be fair to claim that atheists and agnostics aren’t loving too? I’m sure i can say that of other religions too : Islam, hinduism etc etc. Who in the world then is loving?

          • Merely because you don’t comprehend a line of argument doesn’t make it absurd my dear Ignoramus. The article argues that Christians are the biggest argument against Christianity cos of their bad behavior. You disagreed & gave an analogy that if Mercedes Benz (MB) invents a new model & majority of purchasers drive this model badly, it shouldn’t put anyone off buying that model. I replied that au contraire, if MB releases a new model & almost all purchasers of this model are involved in accidents, soon, few people would like to purchase this new model.

This will be the case even if MB brings engineers to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the car is safe. In this instance, most people would consider that since we live in an imperfect world, there’s still the possibility that these engineers/ experts missed something or that there’s a latent error. Most people would wonder that out of all the cars in the world, why is this car always involved in accidents? They’d avoid the car. This is why although it’s not been proven that Malaysian Airlines use inferior planes or are careless, most sensible people avoid it after the 2 misfortunes that happened to it.

No, I don’t believe that Christianity is a PR venture. But if you Christians genuinely believed that your God has given you the job of ‘witnessing’ then you’d be concerned with living your lives in such a way that you wouldn’t turn people away from your religion because of your bad behavior.

& people hold Christians to a higher standard because of your claims. You claim that you are following Christ who was humble & loving & that per your religion, you’re supposed to love your enemies & turn the other cheek. Read your own comments & ask yourself to whether they meet the standards of humility as set by your leader, Christ (eg: comments about someone being closed minded etc, is that really how your leader would have behaved? ). Look at all the comments of Christian commentators on this page insulting Chris & saying he’s going to hell. Is that what you say your leader taught you? & so you see, your very behavior causes non-Christians to see your religion as a farce.

      • And i appreciate that we can have a meaningful dialogue and go back and forth without all the anger. Its truly a pleasure

  2. GC i’m starting to get tired of you and your anti christianity articles. It seems you enjoy it when people come on here and insult each other on your articles, since that’s what normally happens when you post something about christianity. If you don’t believe in God fine, but stop shoving your views down are throats. We don’t care. None of your biased articles about christianity will change a true believer. And i wonder why you never talk about Islam. Are you afraid of them? The old testament of the bible and the koran have alot of similarities. Same as with the torah. But you never attack the moslims. Moslims are killing and kidnapping people all in the name of their God, and they can also quote scriptures from their koran to back up what their doing, and instead of you to write articles about that, you are here making useless arguments about christianity. Do you know how much money these moslims also give to support their religion? They even do more than christians. They just don’t make noise about it. My best friend is a moslim from mali so i now what i’m talking about. Their leader mohammed married a nine year old girl. But you will never talk about none of that nonsense. Look at all the chaos the Islamic religions has brought to the world. And yes i’m a christian, going to a good church where i am. The church has been helping the homeless and we also feed those who don’t have access to work in our church. So not all pastors keep their money to themselves. There are christian missionaries, christian rehab center, schools and a whole lot, but you always choose to focus on the negative to make your point. I always say this as a true christian, even if i die and i find out there was no God or heaven at least being a christian didn’t make me live my life anyhow. I didn’t go for anybody’s wife, drink or smoke and i at least treat people with kindness. So if you want to talk about religion talk about the good side of it too. And don’t just be talking about christianity, talk about islam too.

It is obvious GC does not care so they continue to write, so why don’t you stop coming here for a year and come back to check after that to see if they are still running or not. I promise you they will keep running.

  5. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the article. I am a christian and yes we are hypocrites. A non-believer should look at how we behave and have an urgency to join our Faith, however our actions are not different from theirs. Just because you sin differently does not make your sins much lesser. This isn’t an anti-christian article but rather a wake up article for Christians, we need to get our acts together.
