It was only a few months ago that the entire airwaves in Ghana was saturated with Bukom Banku and Ayittey Powers. The two were billed in the most hyped boxing match in Ghanaian history, and although the fight itself ended anti-climatically; the two became the most hyped personalities in Ghana this year.

Now it seems like Ayittey Powers, who lost said bout, has not seen the last of his troubles. The Australian based Ghanaian boxer has been arraigned before court, allegedly for defrauding two residents of Kumasi out of Ghc 14, 000, under the pretext of securing them visas to Australia.

Daily Guide reports Ayittey Powers, real name Michael Okine, has been charged with defrauding under false pretenses, and was granted bail in the amount of Ghc 50, 000 with two sureties.

The proseceuting officer, Chief Inspector Isaac Agbemehia, said in November 2013 Ayittey Powers claimed he could acquire visas for those planning to travel to Australia.

The fighter has been based in Australia for the larger part of his boxing career, and the two complainants were put in touch with him to facilitate the deal for them.

The complainants, Nana Oppong Yaw and Kofi Asante, both paid Ghc 6, 500 and Ghc 7, 500 to Powers respectively.

Powers then proceeded to obtain boxing documents for the two, despite the fact they weren’t boxers, and showed it to them as proof of his work.

But the duo is believed to have not been satisfied with the documents and asked for a refund from Powers, who he failed to comply.

Oppong and Asante thus reported the matter to police, which led to Powers’ arrest and subsequent arraignment before court.

The boxer, record of (18-24, 6 KO’s), pleaded ‘not guilty’ and was granted bail, with the case adjourned to September 18.
