Daniel Kenu Drops All Charges Against Baffour Gyan

After a lot of grandstanding from the powers that be at Graphic on the case against Baffour Gyan, Daniel Kenu has withdrawn the case against Baffour Gyan, citing health reasons.

The Ashanti regional Daily Graphic editor was assaulted by Baffour Gyan, Samuel Anim Addo- brother and publicist to Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan respectively: and some hired thugs after he asked Asamoah Gyan a question they deemed insensitive.

The case was sent to court, but the defendants have from day one maintained their determination to seek an out of court settlement; and it seems they have achieved their objective with this latest piece of information coming through.

It is a surprising move, especially considering the managing editor of the Graphic Communications Group, Ken Ashigbey, had vowed that justice would be served to Baffour Gyan, to ensure that no journalist would be disrespected in that manner again.

It seems that was all hot air, and as usual with a case involving a high profile personality in Ghana, justice exactly is not what has been served.

So Baffour Gyan gets to walk away a free man, and learns that rules can be broken as long as you have enough cash to pacify the offended party in the aftermath.

Because honestly I do not know what other conclusion we are expected to draw here? The circumstances of the incident was so brazen that one can be sure that getting the prosecution would not be particularly difficult; so why are we hearing that Baffour Gyan walks away a free man, and not that he is going to jail?

We maintain this attitude down here and we enable these bourgeois in their belief that they are somehow above the law. It is a sad state of affairs, but it is the reality in Ghana.

When taken within the context of the recent spate of physical attacks against the media, and this development takes on a sad new light. Someone was needed to take a stance for the media, but unfortunately it’s not going to be Daniel Kenu.
