At this point Ghanaians are never shocked by what comes out of the mouth of Wanlov. He has proven to be a very outspoken person who takes every opportunity to comment on social and religious issues.
More than just commenting on issues, he often speaks a lot of sense. He made news a while back when saying that Ghana’s sickness is worse than Ebola; and by sickness he meant our proclivity to rely on divine intervention in everything we do.
Staying on that same theme, the more controversial half of FOKN Boys told Flex newspaper that he believes he is a good man. And this is because he does good out of the goodness of his own heart. Most other Ghanaians, he thinks, try to do good because of a fear of hell or other some otherworldly punishment.
“I don’t need to practice doing good because I am afraid of hell or dying but because I believe it is a good thing. I think God would be happier with that than doing it because you are afraid of hell. Some people do good things because they are afraid of punishment, and that is not right.”
Even with the fear of hell motivating us, most of us fail in our attempts to be good, but I get his point. We should not require religious teachings of God and Satan to compel us to be decent human beings.
He also tackled the phenomenon in recent times where pastors are indulging in acts that hardly befit their titles. If that was the case, then he himself is a man of God because he doesn’t soil himself to the extent some of these pastors do.
“I am already a man of God. Those people who claim to be men of God- when I look at them, some are lying, stealing, taking people’s wives, and many unscrupulous things which I don’t think men of God should do. For me I don’t do a quarter of those things so I believe I am more of a man of God than those people who call themselves men of God”
He also mentioned the various wicked acts committed in the bible, which Christians conveniently ignore whenever talking about things that happened in the Bible.
Does it matter what reason you ascribe for doing good? Or do you think Wanlov is right that a fear of hell being your motivating factor for doing good makes the act not truly from your heart? I tend to agree with him.
Is doing good good because it is good or good because God says it is good? Educate me please.
